I think Kyle is an excellent wrestler. However, I think ESPN is on their proverbial knees with him every chance they get. How can he be the face of college wrestling when he wrestles a part time schedule? Give me a break. He basically wrestles guys, who are great athletes, but are like me wrestling a toddler in the mobility department. I get it he gives up size but he moves like a light weight compared to the less nimble big men he is up against. All he has to do is get in quickly and get out quickly without getting stuck underneath. I wish Nickal or Zain were his size and weight, would like to see how good Captain America really is...

I tend to agree with you. Kyle Snyder is a great freestyle wrestler, one of the greats of all time. He's also a very good folkstyle wrestler, but he's wrestled a dozen or 15 matches a year and he hasn't gone undefeated or won 4 titles (nor can he). He also seems like a decent guy who's good for the sport and I don't mind him being mentioned a time or three during each round of the championships, but in my opinion, he's not the best folkstyle guy on the mat this weekend, he's not dynamic in all 3 positions and he's not deserving of the constant lovefest, as if this championship was all about him. All that said, it's ESPN, what do you expect?

Jealousy does not become you. KS is a great kid, as is ZR, as is JN. Just enjoy them. And enjoy the fact that wrestling is on tv.

Big balls to present what is generally an unpopular take. My first love was boxing and I didn't restrict my admiration based on nationalism (two of my favorites were from Nicaragua and Mexico). Snyder, to me, is tOSU. I'm not big on the nationalism angle. Folkstyle? I think 4 of our top 5 are better than him.

Lot of hate for someone in my opinion is on track to be America’s greatest wrestler ever

2 world golds
1 Olympic gold
2 time winner yargyin
Going for 3 time NCAA champion

And still hasn’t graduated, seems fair all the attention he has received and he comes across has having humility

Snyder is just a part of this weird ESPN tOSU PR campaign. Did you guys know— tOSU invented fun through positive infinity!?! Did you know they invented bonusing their way to a championship? That Ryan loves his wrestlers, and that their room the most unique and special culture in the sport??? That Snyder is the “most special” of all the wrestlers there? That Ryan’s incoherent post match string of cliches is actually new age wisdom, the finest example of leadership this nation has seen since Gen Patton???

I don't see where anyone exhibited hatred or jealousy by suggesting that the coverage which ESPN has presented is over the top. On the contrary, everyone acknowledged that he's a great wrestler and great for the sport. It's ESPN and to be expected and as someone else pointed out, it's great wrestling and it's on TV, so we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Seen any other wrestlers in the 225 range at HWT doing all those things you suggest? Seen ANYONE at HWT doing those things you suggest.

People are paying. Just to watch him wrestle. People stay in stands just to watch him wrestle. He is one of the sport’s GOATS.

This kid is an amazing wrestler. Simply amazing.

Also, they wear bathrobes during dual meet intros.

ESPN will melt down if Snyder loses to Coon. I know Snyder is an outstanding wrestler but a national title is far from a certainty. Coon is one tough dude and has already beaten Snyder once this year.

Kyle Snyder is a great ambassador for the sport, always a great interview and could go down as the best US wrestler when all is said and done.

You want to add casual fans, he’s as good as it gets to promote.

Seriously, imagine our guys with their one word answers, people would tune out. Our guys are phenomenal wrestlers but they certainly not the best promoters when it comes to media and the such

Cael and Nolf have to be the worst interviews in the sport

I agree that Snyder is a great ambassador for the sport. Also agree that Nolf and Cael interviews can be rather bleh (although sometimes really funny like Friday night when Nolf said that a lot of "us" didn't think he'd be wrestling and then changed his mind and said, "Oh, I was wrong, we all KNEW that I'd be wrestling), but just look what Nolf and Cael have done on the mat. From my perspective, FAR more exciting to watch than a Snyder match (although Cowbell's also correct that no other HWT does some of the things that Snyder does).

While I don't personally want or need any Kyle Snyder coverage it is probably a good story line and interesting for any casual fan that happens to stumble upon the tournament while flipping through the channels.

Need people to tune in to appreciate what guys like Nolf/Cael do on the mat.

If you were running a business and had a great event coming up, and no one knew the product who would you want promoting it?

Snyder, Cael or Nolf

You guys don't notice it but PSU wrestlers gets just as much if not more coverage on TV. This is multiple time Champion Snyder's last go around at home in OHIO. He wrestles a mountain of a man in USA's future Aerospace Engineer Coon. Hell give him more coverage imo!

There are a lot of great wrestlers, past, present and future, and Snyder is certainly among them..
But I don't really consider any athlete to be a "hero".

Featuring him as a means to promote the sport makes perfect sense, and Snyder is a fantastic ambassador for wrestling. But while he is one of the best freestyle wrestlers in the world, he is not the all phases, all positions folkstyle wrestler that Nolf, IMar, Retherford, Nickal or others are.

I disagree with the OP 100%. Kyle Snyder is an American hero. What he has accomplished at his age is nearly unheard of. He deserves all the coverage he gets.
Kyle Snyder is an incredible talent, and ambassador for the sport, but American hero? Nah. Go to Arlington National Cemetery. That's where you'll find your American heroes.

1. Kyle Snyder is a national treasure.

2. Kyle Snyder can not control his own media coverage.

3. ESPN’s coverage of NCAA championships is amazing and helps to grow the sport.

4. ESPN often can’t figure out the best things to hype, or how much hype to apply before it is over saturated. They definitely have beaten some dead horses over the years.

ESPN is in the business of telling stories and trying to create intriguing plot lines for average fans. His is an excellent story. Be an independent 3rd party view for a minute, tell me the clip of him lifting Medbury from last year off his feet is not awesome? Little guy vs big guy always sells. This stuff is not directed at us, forum loving junkies, it's for our wives, kids, friends who need an angle to get pulled in for viewing. BTW-my only dislike of Kyle is where he went to school. This guy's impact on the younger wrestling community will go on for years. Dude, internationally he's already pickled The Beast. He's also done things in a non traditional way which provides a new way of thinking but also bothers traditionalist. This storyline doesn't bother me and I think Coon beats him cementing another PSU Nat'l Championship.

Precisely. The level of self awareness on here (and on hr for that matter) can be astonishingly low.

Sounds to me you are almost describing Cael. Maybe after he achieves six or seven national championships he might catch up. Oh wait, Cael has four national championships and less I forget, Cael is 159 and 0. Greatest wrestler ever.

ESPN is a business, and their business model is telling stories through sports. Its tiresome at times when it focuses on politics, or promotes certain personalities ad nauseum, but if this is the price we have to pay for 3 days of awesome wrestling coverage over multiple platforms then sign me up.

Snyder is great for our favorite sport, and I love rooting for him (and look forward to the opportunity to do so every time he wrestles soon, just not today).

He’s Captain America and deserving of the moniker. Is Captain America the best super hero of all time? Debatable — like all matters of opinion. There will always be legitimate arguments that another super hero was/is better, faster, stronger, etc. And Snyder has a cool backstory — first American to win [fill in the blank, youngest American to [fill in the blank], etc. Plus, he’s eminently likable, approachable, humble, authentic, etc. The fact that he shows up (part time) to also dominate his 2nd favorite wrestling discipline AND effectively goes up a weight class to face guys that should be able to thrash him makes his folkstyle accomplishments all the more impressive. Not to mention that he has breathed life into a weight class that has historically been a giant snooze fest.

As for ESPN’s non-stop love fest. I can see how that could get old. Fortunately I’ve avoided that by watching it on mute and listening to Byers PBP.

P.S. I agree that Cael is a terrible interviewee. Which is weird given that he’s so well spoken and likable. But he always seems completely disinterested and eager to shut it down. The only exception is that sometimes when being interviewed by Byers he’s more forthcoming, at ease, less guarded, etc. But for a guy who is indisputably in the conversation as wrestling’s GOAT, Cael needs to elevate his interview game, if for no other reason than to use that platform to further grow the sport. He’s clearly the kind of guy that prefers to let his action and results do the talking. But he’s missing some low hanging fruit by not investing more into his public appearances.

I'm definitely not jealous of Mr. Snyder. He is bigger, stronger, and faster than I will ever be. He earns everything he gets.

Many good points taken. I appreciate it. I do believe him to be the face of USA wrestling. What he has accomplished is amazing. He is definitely one of the GOATS of wrestling regardless of style. I do see what ESPN is promoting. It is definitely good for the sport. They did the same a few years ago with Gwiz and Snyder. It's interesting to know that some feel the same as me, but many do like it. Yes he is better at interviewing than Nolf and Cael.

Keep em coming, good to hear others opinions.

How about some face time with the Hodge winner that hasn't lost a match since he was a true freshman who is also wrestling his last collegiate match?

I see what you are saying and everyone else's comments and opinions are great. The sport of wrestling is supposed to be humbling and sometimes the stories that ESPN pushes don't show that humbling side. Coon humbled Snyder in round 1, round 2 went the other way. I think that the PSU wrestlers are very humble. I'm glad we can all partake in the coverage of this great sport.

I'm interested to know what people's thoughts are on if KS was a 149 pounder or a 184 pounder how he would fair against guys who are really good at folkstyle.

The only thing that gets a little old for me is Tim Johnson's incessant referring to Snyder as, "the greatest wrestler in the world." Not exactly sure how he determines that.

He is pretty much consensus P4P #1 in freestyle, but the assumption that translates to folk is at time annoying. Then again, non one else beats top talent with 18% less weight. I'd love to shrink him down to 149 and see what happens, but we'll never know. Both dudes are legends, and I'll be sad to not be able to see them wrestle folk again after tonight.
