Simple Fishing Questions

Type of rod doesn't matter, as long as it's reasonably small.

I used to fish with two other guys on opening day, every year, for about 10 straight years. The one guy had a house on the stream and we usually fished together in one or two holes along his property line. One used 6# test, one 4# (me), and one with 2#. Back when the limit was 8 fish per day and here is our typical results. 2# test usually done fishing by 8:20, 4# test usually done fishing by 9:30, 6# test guy never caught more than 2 fish, all day. We all fished the same baits and setups with the only difference being line weight.

4# fluorocarbon leader, 6# main line, small hooks, size 10 or smaller.

10 years and you were still using 4 pound test when you knew 2 was better? You story seems ridiculous to me. Telling kids or inexperienced fisherman to use 2lb test is absurd. The drag would have to be set up absolutely perfect since kids or inexperienced fisherman typically want to horse a fish in.
I was using 6 and 8 pound test and my wife caught over 50 as I previously said.

Yep, 2 pound test line is a pain in the butt to tie and to cast so I use (still to this day) 4 pound test. Sure, fish can be caught using anchor line but that's not the point.

Oh, and don't reply as the bolded part says more than enough about you.

Actually, lighter line is more pliable and easier it cast with less resistance through the eyes. BTW, Sunline makes a 3 lb test and a 5 lb test as well.

I haven't gone fishing for about 15 years. This year my grandkids are old enough so I am taking them fishing tomorrow. Two simple questions:
  1. The last time I fished everyone had to display the license. Most had it in a holder attached to their cap. Is this still necessary?
  2. I am going to fish in a small local lake that is stocked with trout. I don't intend to keep any that I catch. Do I need a trout permit?
Well, how did it go?

Thanks for asking. I got everything ready and went to pick the 4 grandkids up about 8am. All 4 refused to go because it was too cold. We plan on trying again next weekend.

Today's kids are soft.
It was unbelievably cold in the morning. Especially if you weren't in the sun. I joked that I now know how the people on the titanic felt like. We fished till 9 in the shade then went to a sunny area. Caught 18 on the day. Would have caught more if I wasn't shaking so bad and could move my arm.
