So, how concerned should we be with the O-line....

I don't think anyone expected a huge amount of improvement.

And it looks like we were right. They are going to struggle again, based on what we saw yesterday.

This is one area that the sanctions really did affect in a big way, as they intended.

While watching the game I was concerned about the O-line but I don't think Andrew Nelson played at all so thats important to note. As for Paris Palmer he's just not "thick" enough. He looks like a TE. He needs to put on some massive weight and muscle by August. Maybe Chance S. moves ahead of him or they move Nelson to LT.
One other area on the O-line that I saw little improvement was the Center. Is it just me but do Mangior's snaps look like they
could be timed with a sundial? and they still are often times low and to the out side.
I'm thinking if the kid from Stanford has any ability at all he will get a close look at the Center Position and move Mangiro to his more natural Guard position.

One last area that I'm flat out disappointed with...Punting. No excuse for it being that bad.

Agree on the punting. Seems like western PA high schools

have better punters than those guys yesterday.

Based on yesterday? Not concerned at all...

Based on last year, yeah it's going to be an issue until we see what happens in the fall.

Reading anything into a spring game is just pointless. If the game were really a predictor for future success, Morelli and Eric Heffelfinger would have been Heisman candidates the following season.

O'Brien didn't use his limited scholarships on OL & DT

That might have been a good short term decision but a bad long term decision. Freshmen and sophomores often contribute at skill positions but OL and DTs usually need a few years to grow.

Gaia, Dowrey, & Johnson in 2012 (18 total)
Hartman, Nelson & Mahon in 2013 (17 total)
Brosnan, Sorrell, Wright, and White in 2014 (23 total)

It takes 14 players to create a 2 deep chart at OL and DT. We only got 10 in those 3 years and Mahon was the only 4* recruit. That's why we're still a few years away IMO.

I'm expecting a shaky start to the season but the important thing will be improving as the year goes on.

If we see minimal improvement like last year then I think we need to start talking about coaching issues rather than talent issues.

I think the X factor is the Rheiner kid from Stanford. If he can play center as good as Mangiro, that would give the staff some flexibility on the line.I am concerned about Palmer,I don't think he has that body were he is going put on 20lbs.Looks like a basketball player, not a big ten tackle.Sorrell ,in my opinion looks more physically ready to go right now.I think he has potential to be a real solid big ten lineman.

Decent( B-) O lines vs. Outstanding (A) defensive lines.

How long have some of you guys watched BW games. The rule of BW game are

1. Don't show too much.

2. Keep the difference makers ( the new ones) out of the limelight.

3. Play down you strengths .

Whether you agree or disagree that's the way it is.and has been.

The only obvious that stood out was the punting.

Ask me in August....

Spring games .... produce great stars that never make it and plenty of material upon which to work through the summer.

In the end, it is the proper identification and skills that need to be developed. After that a plan to achieve that needs put into place and practiced. At this juncture the OL is at least better in the fact that it has some depth and thus the opportunity for tactical developmental progress. Last year was a debacle.

OSU's OL looked lousy early last season against Va Tech

Played great as the season went forward. It will take a few games into the season to get an accurate picture of how our OL will play in the Big 10 season. I'm not saying they are going to great or even good. I don't think they will suck either. But, the armchair OL experts are tiring to read on here.

That was only Barett's second game

He struggled throwing but he still ran for 70 yards.

OSU had 3 QBs that could step up and run past a blitz. That's takes some pressure off the OL.

The point is. Their OL struggled early on.

The fact that you've already written off our 2015 OL is ridiculous.

I'm concerend also. I believe Hack was sacked four or five times yesterday with the 1st string OL going against the 2nd string D Line. Having a 280 lb LT is not going help matters.

Typical

I said that I expect this years line to be only slightly better than last year. I didn't say that I've written them off.

That's the same kind of criticism I received when I only predicted an 8-4 record last year.

You also say we'll never replace every graduating player

Michael Mauti - Glenn Carson
Glenn Carson - Mike Hull
Jordan Hill- DaQuan Jones
Daquan Jones - Austin Johnson

Our OL played poorly last year. No doubt about it. To say it may be slightly better is the same as saying it will be poor again this year.

I am still concerned, but I also saw considerable improvement. Yesterday's sacks were the result of one individual lineman's failure to execute (different linemen on different plays). Last year's spring game was jail break after jail break, There was less linemen getting pushed completely back into the QB's face. Still too many batted balls and Hack needs to do better job of anticipating the WR's breaks instead of holding onto the ball and trying o fire through a closing window. I watched the 60 minute replay of last years game against OSU. The second INT by Hack was due to holding the ball and firing it on a straight line. If he had released the ball with a little touch and a half second earlier over the DB, the WR was wide open.It was the same with the ball that Golden almost picked off at the goal line yesterday.
