Where Narduzzi has hired the father of an elite 2020 prospect as an assistant. Didn't read the details because I refuse to subscribe to the P-G, but on its face sounds a little shady(?).

When we hired Larry Johnson Sr in 96 was it to ensure we got LJ a couple years later? Was that shady?
These things happen. I'm not buying access to the PG for it but I don't see the issue. I highly doubt the guy doesn't have any coaching background.

Paris Johnson Sr is the coach. His son is a 6-foot-7, 275-pound tackle who has been a magnet for scholarship offers in the class of 2020. Johnson Jr. plays at Cincinnati power program St. Xavier.

Here's the article from a free site

Pat Narduzzi has filled another position in his football operations department.

It looks as though Paris Johnson Sr. has been hired as Pitt’s new Assistant Director of Player Personnel.

That position became vacant a few weeks ago when Da’vell Winters left to rejoin the Oregon football program.

Here’s some background on Johnson Sr: he worked at Michigan State as GA and in the recruiting department. Prior to him coming to Pitt, he worked at Savannah State as a DB coach.

An interesting side note to this hire is that Johnson Sr. is the father of Paris Johnson Jr, one of the top sophomores in the country.

Johnson Jr. (6-7, 260) is an offensive tackle at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. This elite prospect already holds offers from Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Miami Fla, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Stanford and Tennessee.

To say that he’s an elite prospect would be an understatement.

Johnson Jr. and his mother made an unofficial visit to Pitt two weeks

The kid won't end up at Pitt IMO but if he goes to Pitt over Ohio State/Michigan/Michigan State then maybe that's a win :)
If the kid is smart he goes to Stanford
Sr has coaching experience--doesn't seem like a reach

This practice of hiring a family member of a recruit is fairly common in the SEC in both football and basketball.

I’ve noticed it more since the fallout from Auburn and Cam Newton (not sure if it’s become more common or I just started to notice it. ;)).

So, Narduzi thinks he'll be coaching at Pitt in 2020 or will he be bringing Johnson Sr. along with him to MSU?

You have to pay to read P-G? I went there, clicked the link and read the article. Been doing that for years. Looks like the guy worked for Narduzzi in the past, so I'm not going to be critical of the hire. I'd hire him too assuming he's qualified for the job.

Looks like Narduzzi got this hire just under the wire. But why would an elite prospect choose Pitt anyway?

That rule, bylaw 11.4, reads like this:

In football, during a two-year period before a prospective student-athlete's anticipated enrollment and a two-year period after the prospective student-athlete's actual enrollment, an institution shall not employ (or enter into a contract for future employment with) an individual associated with the prospective student-athlete in any athletics department noncoaching staff position or in a strength and conditioning staff position.

This definition includes, but is not limited to, parents, legal guardians, handlers, personal trainers and coaches. An individual who meets this definition retains such status during the enrollment of the prospective student-athlete at the institution.

They have a limit on how many free articles you can read a month or something along those lines. I agree with the rest

Interesting. I guess I don't ever reach that limit (I only go there if someone else posts a link somewhere that seems interesting).

No and no to the Larry Johnson Sr questions you pose. Johnson worked summer camps at PSU and was well-known to Paterno, Bradley, and other coaches. They hired him because he was experienced, articulate, and related well to young men. And they were right - he turned out to be a great asst. coach.

Agree, which is not to say that it also isn't the case with the Pitt hire. I was just wondering if this were common and whether it would raise some eyebrows. Now that we know Narduzzi worked with him at MSU, it becomes less suspect, at least on the surface.

Pitt: Paris Johnson Sr., who coached the safeties at Savannah State (FCS – GA) last season, has joined the Pitt staff as director of player personnel, per source. Johnson Sr. previously spent a season working with Pat Narduzzi as a defensive graduate assistant at Michigan State and is a former fifth-round NFL draft pick. He also worked in the recruiting department at Michigan State for a few seasons as well prior to joining the Savannah State staff.

Actually, if it was anyone, it was for Tony - he was a HS All American, but Larry turned out to be the better college player and pro prospect.

One recruit isn't going to save Pitt football. Narduzzi will likely be gone by the time he would enroll anyway. Whether that is to greener pastures, or to jail for his involvement at MSU... that remains to be seen.

That's my point. It wasn't shady when we did it so why assume the Pitt hire is?
Paris has ties to Narduzzi

The more comments that are made like this the more I understand why other fan bases attacked us

The kid will probably not even end up at Pitt. He'll have options. This stuff is also overblown. The coaching profession is a fluid deal, it's just as likely the father will be up and on to another position in coming years so I doubt it has a ton of impact on son. This happens in lots of places and in end I'm sure most kids end up at the best program they are most comfortable with. And sometimes having relative actually works against the situation.

Just to be clear, when you say "us" does that mean those on this message board? Or do you mean like when Penn State Football hired Larry Johnson and you had nothing to do with it?

Was LJ SR even viewed as a top recruit then? My understanding was it was Tony later on that was the highly ranked one. I believe at time fans thought we were only taking JR. because his father was on the staff and we already had other top RB's so there were grumblings.

Wow--you took pathetic to a whole new level. I love when you do things like this--it proves how desperate you are. You're the reason WE are considered a cult.

Dude, everybody knows your act by now. Nobody's fooled, and nobody thinks that your "we" means "us". Just go back to the Lair or wherever you are from. Nobody will miss you.

How exactly does calling you out on something stupid you said take pathetic to a whole new level, or come off as desperate? Are you trying to say that I just pointed out that you took pathetic to a whole knew level, but your writing skills just aren't good enough to convey a clear and concise thought? Regardless, your response is detached from reality and really comes off as a desperate grasp at straws.

Anyway, I say jump and you say how high. Thanks for playing again!

Nothing is more pathetic than the slow troll game. Spending time making thousands of posts on a another schools board, pretending to be a fan despite absolutely nobody on the board buying their act or valuing their opinion, thinking that saying "us" and "we" often will fool people who received a better education than they did.

Seems I recall Frank Rocco being hired to get his son (also Frank Rocco--qback) to PSU and I thought we hired Ted Kwalick's HS coach to get him on board. Maybe be remembering something off kilter but that is my recollection.

His writing comes across as “I am superior to you.” What can I say? There are people in this world who are like that — no matter who they root for.
