So is it gonna be Lee or Cortez at 141?

What's your best guess? It's all guessing now anyway, but just for fun...

I'll go with Lee. A special talent plus a year in the room = ready for PRIME TIME!

Well, in the spirit of being objective, CP doesn't exactly have a good track record in ranking 141-lbers from PSU.

Sorry if that comes off LP-ish . . . Nevertheless, I am eager and excited to see what Lee brings to the table. Also curious about a healthy Cortez at a more comfortable weight.

There may be another contender in that room.

So if as a true freshman Nick Lee is a bona-fide top 4 contender he's transfering via cruiseliner to Rutgers?

So, nitlion6, what would be your best guess? Who goes at 141?
It will be us and tOSU for both the B1G and national tournament championships. If Nick Lee is the best in the room at 141 for 17/18, that is who you go with. We'll be strong enough in the future years where you could still RS him if needed. I still think Cortez at 133 and Lee at 141 is the strongest lineup at those two weights, assuming Cortez can cut and make weight at 133. Barring a transfer, I believe Yanovich is our best bet at 125. Saw a picture of him with his arm in a sling last season, so I'm hoping he is 100%.

We like to refer to it as the shitliner.. and wow I wonder how CP came to the conclusion as a top 4 contender in a loaded 141 top weight class.. Cortez is a talent, he needs to be in the lineup.. hopefully can get 33 healthy would kinda stink if he transferred and didn't start too.

CP thinks Lee is a top four contender year one. That's a pretty strong endorsement.

My best guess would be Lee, but projecting him top 4 at 141 at this point is very unrealistic. Not saying he won't be there come next March but at this point with the returning wrestlers at 141 seems to be IMHO quite a stretch.

Gotta agree with this. The weight class has:
  • Heil
  • Jack
  • Meredith
  • Eierman
  • Ashnault
  • Kolodzik
  • Thorn
  • McKenna/Hayes
Cracking the top 4 in that group would be quite an accomplishment and seems rather optimiistic at this point for a true freshman.

I tend to agree with you. However, just for the sake of argument...Wrestlestat has Cortez at #6 at 141 right now. IF Lee is better than Cortez, then considering Ashnault's injury status makes him a question mark, then #4 for Lee is not outside the realm of possibility.

Cortez is 6 on wrestlestat because of a very small sample size. But I'm hoping the step up in weight makes a difference for Cortez and he gets top 4 this year. In my uneducated opinion Lee needs a redshirt year to get better from bottom.

The answer to the question "Is it gonna be Lee or Cortez at 141?", is, "In all likelihood". I know this because I just checked my magic David Taylor 8 ball, which has all the wrestling answers contained within.

No idea. I have heard the same stories as everybody else. That Nick has become brutal on top and will be fun to watch. However he lost at least one puzzler last year.

I posted earlier that I do believe if Nick is going to be special than after a year in that room he should be positioning himself as the obvious 141 pounder. If he is struggling to establish himself as the dominant 141 pounder than while he will probably be pretty good, special might be a stretch.

If he is the dominant kid at the weight in our room, and he is a national top 4 true freshman type kid, then I suspect next spring he could be the kid Rutgers sends a cruiseliner to Happy Valley to recruit to New Brunswick/Piscataway.
If next spring we get to read on the Rutgers board about the next Penn State to Rutgers transfer, 3 years in a row we can figure we have a new Rutgers tradition.

Hope Nick is working hard on getting off bottom. Many freshman have that problem unless you are ELITE....It's a mind set that NOONE can hold me down. Nick has a motor in him !

I don't know who this "Nick Lee" character is. I've been counting on Question Mark, No One, and The Riddler, and until I see that Nick Lee can come in the room and beat No One and handle Question Mark, I'm not impressed. After all, No One beat Nico in the room. Literally and figuratively.

I'm still trying to figure out who's on first for Christs sakes.

Go **** yourself with this post. Now I'm getting no sleep tonight.....

'Preciate it....

Lee is a hell of a recruit, but 141 is stacked. If Lee and Cortez are even close I think it's Cortez. If Lee handles him then game on.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount wrestle stat. At a minimum, Cortez' rating there is based on 17-2. Not sure if RSFR record is included or not. Andegre says that the rating really starts to settle in at 14 matches, so Cortez' shouldn't be that far off.

Nick Lee is not going to be like most true freshman. He's had the ability to train at the NLWC for a year and work with Cael and his staff over that time. Sure, this freestyle season did not go as planned for Nick, but he's probably improved a hell of a lot the last year. We saw what he did to Sammy Sasso at Who's #1 last October, and Sasso is a hell of a wrestler. I can only imagine how much more Lee has improved since.

Actually, I think 141 is a pretty wide open weight class with no really dominant wrestlers. Do you think, for example, that if Sorensen was at 141, all things being equal, that he wouldn't have at least a couple of titles by this point?

Yes, there are no truly dominant wrestlers at 141, though there is a 2-time defending champ. Other than that, it's pretty wide open. However, that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of talent, or that cracking the top 4 isn't a tall order for Nick Lee.

Dean Heil is pretty dominant. He may not win big, but it's hard to recall the last time he lost. Actually I just recalled the last time he lost, it was to Jimmy Gulibon.

It's difficult to imagine ANY 2 time champ being less dominant than Heil. Extremely underwhelming.

While 141 is quite deep, I don't think it's a mischaracterization to state that any of the top 8 guys or so could win it all and it would not be surprising.

What is most shocking to me is that the referee is actually in position to see the pin and still didn't call it. Lots of times you see a ref out of position and you can't really fault him for not calling a pin (although the ref in the 2011 finals for DT sure did - Jenkins being between him and Taylor when he called the fall). But this guy .....
