So you don't want to be called a Troll...

Since the beginning of this season more and more first time posters, or posters in their first 20 odd posts have started threads where they go negative or less than positive on a situation, game, coach, or odds of getting a recruiting prospect. Two things happened right around the same time, the rebanning of hundreds of past trolls who were given clemency by the change in board format, and a second season of football that fell short of most (not all, but most) of our expectations. If you go negative in your first 20 or so posts, the way that some have, with no history, there is no doubt questions will arise especially after a number of trolls, that had been banned for years, reappeared and were rebanned under their old names.

If you are looking to avoid this might I throw out a few suggestions.
  1. Introduce yourself. For instance 3 years ago after being a lurker for more than two years my first post was to introduce myself, endorse David Mullaly for board of trustees, and give my first name and year of graduation. Granted, I could have been lying but to go to such lengths, I immediately gained some trust that I was who I said I was.
  2. If you don't want to say who you are and want to remain anonymous then participate in some of the other discussions before giving a hot take on a controversial topic. Example: there are always threads about what fraternity you were in, what involvement in THON you had as an undergrad, where your freshman dorm was, your favorite game experience, a personal Joe or player story, your favorite downtown bar while you were in school, or your favorite sorority to sneak out of in the morning. Contributing to those discussions goes a long way to ingratiating yourself to the board community and showing your not just here to talk about why Pitt has a better future than us going forward, how we hired the wrong coach, or why we aren't getting XYZ prospect.
  3. Don't come out guns blazing against a long time member in your first few posts. Respect is earned, not given. If you come out spitting fire against someone we all have gotten to know over the course of many discussions we are going to think, who is this guy and where is he coming from, regardless of what we think of that member. He maybe an idiot, but he's our idiot, type of deal. Follow suggestion 1 or 2 before waging war.
  4. Realize what it's been like here the last few years. After what happened happened, they come out of the wood work to tell us what they thought of us. The axe grinders finally got to swing their 20-40 year sharpened inferiority complexes in our face. Plenty came back under new names, so when you show up with 10 posts and go all chicken little we pause. In the last year and half it's gotten much better, but there are still plenty of bitter souls that will take any chance they can to take a shot and on a lot of other boards on rivals the falsehoods and outright lies still get repeated as gospel. So whether you are bringing that topic up or not, if we don't know you or you are always telling us why we're failing then there is reason to believe you're just another one of those bitter souls.
  5. If you follow any of the first 4 suggestions then let me say, please have opinions, let them be educated! If you are informed on a subject and want to give your take then do it, back it up, but realize not everyone will agree with you. Plenty of people have strong opinions people disagree with, who are respected members; Guns, Bushwood, Barry, Judge, Lajolla, Alphabets, and Knocker. Be careful of politics with Roy, Marbles, or Dem. Don't talk about the NL East with Howie or Jim. Don't ever say anything positive about ND to Glov or Pitt to LionLurker. Don't outrage Bob. Listen to Midnighter on TV and Movies. Make sure to catch Ro's sig pics. And always try to get a like from FairGambit.
The thing about all of those people I mentioned above is... they are all recognizable as Penn State fans. No one will ever call them a troll bc they and so many others have contributed their thoughts and passions to the board about a wide range of topics in both positive times and bad times. Look no further than the thread on Sarge. He was often put in the sin-bin, but when he stopped showing up people noticed, because they cared.

If you really aren't a troll then show us you're not, become someone we care about.

We had some training at work just yesterday...and part of the training was about internet and social media....and one of the things they discussed was people who go out of their way to cyberbully or do malicious things on the internet. If you are a grown man or woman and you get your thrill trolling on a message board...you have some real problems. Look at yourself in the mirror. Some folks need a reality check if they really get happiness in trolling folks on the internet over college football.

I suggest a copy of their last five W-2s, copy of driver's license (with pic), copy of their social security card, copy of birth certificate (for all the birthers out there), copy of their Penn State diploma, and a fingerprint analysis conducted by an independent firm not ever led by Louis Freeh.

Plus all the other stuff mentioned by the OP.

Excellent advice.

The best ones are the ones that state the sanctions are an excuse or pretend they never happened. Watch the DL this year compared to the last 2 years and say that again. The sanctions cut numbers on the roster and totally hampered recruiting for 2-3 classes. Yet this staff should have contended for the B1G title this year. IMO those people are either completely stupid or they are trolls. They really shouldn't be discussing PSU football on this site.

If you think the sanctions were a prize, you might be a moron.
If you think the national media blasting PSU 3 years ago had no effect on PSU or recruiting , you might be a moron.
If you think the rebuilding process was or is a 1-2 year process, you are a moron.

I've been lurking for a couple years, and started posting back in July. Generally, I have followed the blueprint for item 2 on your list.

But I have to admit, seeing the advice from item 5, gives me some devilish ideas! ( for example, does the NL east still play baseball). ;)

Let me add a bit more, regarding item 1:
lifetime PSU/Joe P. fan
Graduated from Bloom U. (89)
Football -PSU and Stillers. Baseball- Red Sox (not a bandwagon jumper. suffered most of my life with them till recently)
Politics? currently man without a party...lifelong Republican but am angry with them.

love the senses of humor often displayed here on this board, along with the wide variety of topics discussed.

Can't wait to see what JF can do with this team once they are back to full strength

Lifetime PSU fan- I grew up in Erie and my parents met at PSU
Graduated from PSU
I really only follow college sports- gave up on pro sports a while ago
I also follow college baseball because my son plays
Coached high school and middle school basketball and numerous levels of baseball from Little League to high school

You forgot the SSN. How are we supposed to easily steal their identity without that? Geez I don't want to have to work at it. :D

Nice list. I would add (for everyone, not just FNGs) that it helps if you develop a sense of humor and a sarcasm detector. So many things are posted here in jest or sarcastically that, unfortunately, go right over some heads. If you can't tell, ask the OP before you start blasting away with both barrels and possibly make a fool of yourself.

LOL.

Been lurking for a very long time, post very little. Lost a few posts (around 10) when the board did that thing. Mostly, I just like to read and glean info whilst working (or pretending to). Grew up 2 miles outside of Spruce Creek (or Spruce Crick, depending on your central PA dialect). Went to Juniata Valley, mom worked at Warnock as a chef, so I went to PSU for 25% of cost. Started at Toon town with the rest of the derelicts, made my way to Main and eventually graduated. I try to stick to posting about things I actually know a little about. My only really negative post was in response to the clown USCe fan that came over and made his cute little holier than thou post. That shit irks me, and I happen to know a little bit more about USCe than the average USCe fan, so I blasted him.

Other than that, not a troll.

I would suggest mandatory on-line training sessions, plus a blood test for any infectious diseases. That way, if you ever get invited to a certain former poster's massive tailgate, we'll know to be careful.

One more hint - don't argue the Civil War (err, the War of Northern Agression) with NitNeLion

"Make sure to catch Ro's sig pics." I wish I had a nickel for every pic he posted that I DIDN"T read what he had to say!!!! I would be rich beyond my wildest dreams

The regulars on this board are way too quick to name call and accuse people of trolling. I rarely post because of it. Watch me get attacked for this simple observation......go.

It depends on what you post. I've seen many newcomers welcomed, but they don't come on here throwing darts and hurling negative insults around. If they're respectful, they will be treated fairly.

The trigger for troll labeling is in general the tone of the posting. You can call us reactionary or mean or whatever, but the truth is, we aren't idiots and this has been going on for years.

Pitt, in fact, has a 2 credit communications course that is offered every semester in just this subject matter. I believe it is called "Effective Internet Trolling and Baiting for the Mentally Handicapped". Apparently there is a long waiting list for the course.

I can handle being disagreed with or challenge on my point of view or poor attempt at humor. It's the junior high name calling or instant troll label that's thrown around that is ridiculous. I bleed blue and white and have been called a troll because my clever post title upset people. There are too many babies on here that think they own the board because they have thousands of posts. Others of us like to read and then go about our lives cause we have them. Name call.......go!

You are quite the whiner. I do believe Shakespeare's "Thou doth protest too much" applies. Whine away....go!

I was also going to suggest to limit posting to times when you think Chewie won't be around, between midnight and dawn, summer vacation. But that won't work; the man is on a mission the relentlessness of which has not been seen since the days of Torquemada.

I'm not a whiner, I'm a winner! Don't forget it! And by the way, calling me a whiner is name calling. You lose! wha wha

"The regulars"? You are generalizing. If you used the words "some regulars", I would agree with that observation. We have a few here who are quick to jump on new posters, but I think part of that is that this Board has been flooded with trolls for the past 4 years and many of those trolls are given great leeway by the mods. I think that has a tendency to make some regulars shoot and ask questions later.

I have been critical of what I think is a lack of civility by some here. I don't know how it strengthens one's argument by calling another poster an "a**hole", "dbag", or worse. That usually results in a rebuttal using similar terms and the thread deteriorates. I think the best approach is to make a post, respond if you chose to thoughtful responses (both positive and negative), and ignore the name calling.

If you don't want to be called a troll, then don't troll. It's a sign of upstairs problems. Especially men who pretend to be women.

So that's why so many of them are master baiters

Since I haven't created an alternate userid that sounds all Nittany-ish, and make no bones about who I am and who I root for....

... I am therefore not a troll.

Trolls try to disguise who/what they are.

fair enough

Sanctions or no sanctions i dont think its trolling if someone thinks we should have at least beat Maryland in 14 and NW in 15 regardless. Games still could have been won with better game/clock management.

Its ok to question coaching decisions, to me you are not a troll. It's okay to feel our recruiting class could still be better and be dissatisfied if you did not get the player you think could really help us succeed. That is not trolling.

Let's allow people to have opinions still without calling them a troll or saying they must be a pitt or rutgers fan everytime they are critical of something penn state. Because let's be honest, we should all be critical of penn state for their handling of joe. that would not be trolling.

Point 5, man. I share a lot of the opinions you mention, but at this point most here know who I am so when I criticize everyone knows where it's coming from. What I am talking about is people who come in and right away say that stuff with nothing to back it up and no history developed on the board.
Search some of the infamous trolls who are still active and look at their first 20 posts or so. All of them are negative and disparage Franklin or promote Pitt. It's so obvious what is going on there.

I generally find that the skin on this board has become very thin of late. I have been on the board for many years and find that the dominant voices today are much less receptive to other opinions than in past years.

To the extent that is true, I will restate what I said earlier. Over the past 4 years, this board has been flooded with trolls and, in my opinion, they have been given much more leeway than they deserve. As a result, I think some of the long time posters have taken it upon themselves to police the board. I agree some are too quick to condemn opposing voices, but if you look at threads that are started, or dominated, by trolls, it is understandable.
