Some big surprises early in this session

just got home ... missed all the fun ...

but as you indicated, some surprising upsets -- Garrett is a stunner to me.

Quick take on PSU:

- Conaway lost a tough one. He was not favored, but it sounds as though it was really close
- Gulibon did a nice job
- Beitz; so frustrating. I though he might match up well against Stallinago -- came close but not quite
- Brown is cruising
- McCutcheon, wow, what has gotten into him in March?
- McIntosh sounds like he did better than R1
- LawDog seems like he's finally into a groove we were looking for, but injuries kept keeping him from

So PSU puts 5 of 7 into R3 of the Championship bracket. 7 of 7 would have been my preference, but 5 is very good the way the tourney is going and considering the matchups PSU was facing in R2.

I look forward to reading Tim's write-up. Now I need to attend to a delayed dinner. ;)

seeds that fell in R2 ...

I'm copying this from Flo. You can access the original info on Flo at this link. The way it's titled ("Fallen Higher Seeds Round 2") suggests that not all seeds that lost are identified. In fact, Conaway isn't listed, so the list must just be high seeds that lost. My comments are after some of the weight classes, in bold.

Tom

125
#2 Nahshon Garrett-Cornell
#5 Sean Boyle-UTC

*** Still can't believe that Garrett lost. I went back and forth on whether to have Garrett as my selection at 125 in InterMat's Pick'Em. ***

133
#5 Zane Richards-Illinois

*** Another surprise. He had a nice B1G Tourney. ***

141
#3 Lavion Mayes-Missouri
#6 Chris Dardanes-Minnesota
#8 Geo Martinez-Boise State

*** Wow, the title chances of Mizzou and Minny took a hit here, unless they wrestle to the 3/4 match. Didn't one of the Dardanes' lose in R2 last year? ***

149
#4 Brandon Sorensen-Iowa

*** Are you kidding me? I seriously thought of picking him to win the weight class. I was pretty confident he'd make it to the semis of the Championship bracket. Another blow for Iowa. ***

157
#6 Josh Demas-Ohio State
#8 John Boyle-American

165
#4 Nick Sulzer-UVA
#8 Peyton Walsh-Navy

*** I thought Sulzer was a tad overrated, but I expected him to make the semis of the Championship bracket. ***

174
#5 Blaise Butler-UVA

184
#3 Blake Stauffer-ASU
#4 Jack Dechow-ODU
#8 Domenic Abounader-Michigan

*** Holy crap. I only saw Stauffer 1 time this year, but between his record and his seed I thought he'd handle Cutch. Dechow? I believe 2 of the 3 TOM analysts picked him to win, and I believe I picked him in my TOM Pick'Em. Abounader won the B1G Tourney. ***

guys whom I am surprised to see their Tourney is already over ...

- Josh Kindig: lost in R1, and lost in R1 of wrestlebacks

- Dylan Peters (named a sleeper by a few): lost in R1, and lost in R1 of wrestlebacks

- Hunter Stieber; lost in R1, and injury defaulted in R1 of wrestlebacks. I'm going more on his name; his durability this year did seem quite questionable at B1Gs

- Mike Kelly: lost in R1, and lost in R1 of wrestlebacks. Absolutely no points for Iowa from Kelly

- Anthony Perrotti (Rutgers): he AAed last year, and lost in R1, and then R1 of consolations

- Nick Moore: another guy from whom Iowa gets no points

- Brett Pfarr: lost tin R1, and lost to Hayden Zillmer (No. Dakota St) in R1 of Consolations. Minny gets no points from him

Tyler Massa (Michigan): change in weight didn't seem to help, losing in R1, and then losing to Frank Cousins (Wisky) in Consolation R1

Isn't it ironic the year Nico redshirts and his nemesis Delgado loses in round 1 and his next best competitor Garrett from Cornell also loses.

Re: guys whom I am surprised to see their Tourney is already over ...

Pfarr lost to Scott Patrick of Davidson in R1 not Cutch.

Cutch beat Mick Fiegener of Cal-Poly and Stauffer.

Re: guys whom I am surprised to see their Tourney is already over ...

I would expect the upsets to continue today. the backside wrestling will be awesome considering who lost yesterday. I predict a rollercoaster team race that at least 2 teams maybe 3 are in 1st place for some period of time, with as many as 6 within 8 pts heading into tomorrows medals rounds

Should beitz AA with his backside draw it will be pure guts.

I hope Cutch beats courts. If for no other reason than it will bring JohnDoe back to the party more.

Thanks to the wrestling gods we are getting "snowed in" today. Thanks to Al gore I can work from home as a result!

Beitz really has a tough road in the consi bracket, starting with Pantaleo of UM. Meanwhile, Villalonga gets Cobb of Penn, which figures to be an easier match.

It's really too bad that Beitz lost to Villalonga, as the upper side of the 149 lb championship bracket had cleared out a good bit. Betiz just got careless in OT.
