Couple of things here:
1) All quiet at the moment.
2) Signing day is Wednesday. James will be asked about OC at his afternoon press conference and he will talk about it.
3) It goes without saying after the contract extension that he probably has some serious resources to work with on this hire, though I suspect there is some topping out point. I just don't see Penn State being the place that sets a record for an OC hire, but it could and probably will be a record for this program.
4) What I don't know, but am interested in, is whether or not there are any challenges or if progress has been made toward alleviating the timeline of making a hire like this or getting the wheels into motion faster.
Read this quote from my preseason interview with James. This is later in an answer to a question about the progress they had made through five years.
"One of the things that we have done from an NCAA perspective, from a Big Ten perspective, and then just from a Penn State perspective is, we have put a lot of rules and policies and procedures in place that make it very difficult to do the job. That I would say very few places in the country have. So schools that we're competing against, they could get something done in 48 hours, it may take us six months to a year because of all the policies and procedures that were put in place when this happened. That's one of the things for us to do is, we just need to take a minute and step back and say, OK, this happened. We had this reaction and made these choices and put these policies and procedures in place. Now, after seven or eight years, are these still the right things that we should be doing for the university as a whole, for the athletic department, and for the football program? Let's just now take a step back, like you should at any time, and say OK, are the things we're doing, are they the right things to be doing for Penn State moving forward?"
Obviously, it's not going to take six months to make an OC hire that was vacated. He is speaking more about adding staff, creating new positions, projects, etc. But, the point remains that Penn State in its current iteration is a bear to deal with. Just very slow moving and deliberate, sometimes to the extreme.
I don't have names and I doubt I'm going to get them. Again, I can throw out a wish list, but it's not grounded in fact, and so as far as I'm concerned it's a useless endeavor. I am, however, interested in the timeline and the background of whoever winds up in the position, which I am working to learn more about.
