Lack of situational awareness costs Steelers a chance at a long FG for the win. Steelers have 3rd down at Lions 40. 15 seconds left. No timeouts. Bad weather but kicker has already kicked a 50+ yarder earlier. Steelers throw a short out pattern to Pat F. who fumbles. Lions recover. Game ends in tie. But even if Pat doesn't fumble, he's going to be tackled in bounds and the clock will run out before the Steelers can get the field goal team on. How in the world does Rudolph throw that ball there? It would have gained maybe 2 or 3 yards. Stunning lack of situational awareness. And these guys are pros. And Rudolph had a coach talking in his helmet. Just unreal.

Agree, I thought out of a timeout they would of had a better option than that. RUn the WR on the sideline on a hitch or something at 5-6 yards, throw to the back shoulder, fall out of bounds.....

Felt bad for Pat but that would have been last play of game.

Look, I'm not going to pretend that being in the heat of the action allows for the same clarity as sitting in my recliner. 😀 But, someone has to be telling Rudolph there you can't throw this in the field of play, right? And as much football as Rudolph has played, doesn't he have to know that he can't throw that ball there? Sometimes during the PSU games, I get upset with the seeming lack of situational awareness our guys demonstrate, especially given how much football they've played. I guess maybe it's like a fog of war thing and unless you've had these scenarios drilled into you, you don't know how to react in the moment.

That ineptness was equal to the PSU/Illinois game. But considering we are talking about an NFL team its 10x worse. I mean not having a viable backup in the NFL...really? I guess Haskins was/is a complete bust?
And Matt Canada can take his fly sweep offense somewhere else.
Just an epic fail and pretty typical of Tomlin for punching down.

Wow, that’s a lot of excuse making for Friermuth, who played an absolutely horrendous game. He caught that pass in stride and had an easy/clear path to the sideline. Instead, he put the ball in the wrong hand — exposing it for just the sort of hit that caused the fumble — then made the asinine decision to cut upfield instead of running out of bounds. Without BOTH of those gaffes by Friermuth, it’s Steelers’ ball with the clock stopped, and Boswell is trotting out to attempt the game winning field goal.

I like Friermuth and am glad he’s on the Steelers, but the result of that play unfortunately was consistent with his play all day and was the cause of the Steelers not having the chance to try the FG.

that running into the punter penalty was probably the silliest penalty that I've ever seen

so bad it was funny

Agree on that play. He could have gotten out of bounds. But didn’t think his whole game was ‘horrendous’
