So Ben is coming back, but it’s obvious his time is coming to an end and either he is going to pull an Andrew Luck or try to play and possibly get hurt again. The backups suck. I don’t think Hodges will be on the roster next season. Since he was hurt Rudolph will probably be brought back, but it’s obvious they need to get a QB especially with Ben’s uncertain future.

The draft class this year isn’t strong, but the FA market is.

Brady
Brees
Rivers
Winston
Tannehill
Bridgewater
Manning
Mariota
Dalton

All of these are UFA. Brady and Brees I don’t see leaving their teams even though I’d be hard press to give Brees huge money with his 8-8 playoff record. Manning will probably retire. Winston was a turnover machine, but did throw for 5000 yards and 30 TD, so TB will prob franchise him.

any of the others fit the Steelers? I think Bridgewater will want a starting job and be too pricey. I can see them making a run at Mariota or even Dalton, who Tomlin has always praised.

The Steelers have very little room under the cap. They likely will bring in a veteran, but it will be a bargain basement move. They are going to put their cards on Big Ben.

They have to make a move IMO. Ben’s getting older and declining. The way things are now, without him they are in real trouble.

The list is very unrealistic, maybe Mariota if he wants to sit a year or so....Everyone else (except Manning) will probably be way too expensive. I can't imagine wants to hold a clipboard to a guy from the same draft class as him.
Steelers can't really address it meaningfully in draft either, they traded their 1 already. They need to get a position player that can help improve the team next year....
I think they have to ride with Ben this year, and then make the call. If Ben isn't Ben next year is a lost year, but they will be in good position the following year.

One further thought, maybe a 6th gets it done for Josh Rosen?

With the defense looking promising they’ll probably go 2020 with Roethlisberger and hope Rudolph improves to take over (unlikely) or improves to create trade value (also unlikely). Duck is not an NFL qb.

Even if Ben comes back and plays well, Steelers need better RB and especially WR play to make a serious playoff run. WR should be addressed in this strong class. Defense should be strong if they don’t lose Dupree’s production. Sounds like they don’t want to or can’t afford to pay him what he’ll want.

can you read?? I never said they were going after any of the top guys. Brady and Brees will resign for a year with their teams. Winston will be franchised. Bridgewater will demand too much.

I thought I heard they would be ok with cap space now that AB is off the books?

They actually need a TE more than another reciever. McDonald is always hurt. The kid they got from Seattle is a number two and free agent and Grimble is a blocker.

It seems they tied up that money giving extensions. That said, I think the cap is supposed to take a good bump up this year so that will help. I think a few veterans won't be brought back so that should clear some money. I don't think they'll have the money to sign Dupree. He played great but why did he save it for a contract year?

Conner will get one more season. Bad QB really effected him this year. His injury history is alarming tho. I’d love to Snell get more reps. I’m not ready to draft a RB. The OL especially left side with Foster and Villanueva is more of a need.

They will franchise Dupree, but if he has another good year it’s going to be an issue. Extending Watt gotta be a priority.

Bad QB play didn't hurt his shoulder. Or his deep thigh bruise. Or his hangnail. He's cheap and his contract is up at the end of the year. Good guy but never available.

I tend to think so as well, but many “experts” seem to think mid first round. I would of course not plan on him being available for the Steelers but it is not impossible.
Hate to inform you, but the Steelers have no 1st round pick in 2020. It is impossible unless they package a 2nd and 3rd round pick, plus probably a 2021 2nd rounder to move up into 1st round. Even that package may not be enough to get it done.

PITTSBURGH -- After missing the postseason for the second consecutive year, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert will begin to make personnel decisions that will shape the team’s future.

The Steelers flourished on defense in 2019 but had major struggles on offense. To bounce back, the organization has some glaring holes to fill.

Pittsburgh, though, is primed to enter the 2020 season without much salary-cap space, thanks to the $33.5 million hit that comes with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s contract. It also bears mentioning that Colbert’s contract is set to expire after the 2020 NFL draft, and determining his future with the organization is paramount this offseason. In his 20th season as general manager, Colbert pulled off a risky trade to acquire Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick for a first-round pick. With all that in mind, here are the top three items on the Steelers’ offseason to-do list:

Keep linebacker Bud Dupree

Tomlin was clear in his end-of-season news conference: Retaining Dupree is at the very top of his to-do list this offseason.

“Make no mistake,” Tomlin said. “Bud Dupree is a priority for us.”

It’s no mystery why. Playing out his fifth-year option, the 2015 first-round pick led the Steelers with 16 tackles for loss and had a career-high 11.5 sacks. As a tandem with T.J. Watt, Dupree laid the foundation for the Steelers’ pass rush of the future. The two combined for 26 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and 42.5 tackles for loss.

It’s no wonder Watt wants his teammate back.

“Hell, yeah,” Watt said. “If anyone asks me that, it’s way above my pay grade, but if anybody asks me that, I’ll 100 percent advocate for Bud Dupree.

“This defense was a lot of fun to be a part of. ... I hope we can keep it as similar as possible for next year.”

If the salary cap rises to the expected $200 million, the Steelers are projected to have $2.4 million in effective cap space for the 2020 season, according to Over the Cap. The most cost-efficient way to keep Dupree would be to move on from some expensive veterans and apply either a franchise or a transition tag. Per OTC’s estimates, that would cost the Steelers $16.2 million or $14 million in 2020.

Keeping Dupree might mean the Steelers would have to part with free agent Javon Hargrave, who became a solid part of the defensive-line rotation after Stephon Tuitt was injured.

Fully healthy after dealing with injuries to his shoulder and groin earlier in his career, Dupree put together his best professional season and made himself an indispensable part of the Steelers’ defense. In doing so, he put himself in position to make a lot of money on the open market. Dupree made it clear that he wants to stay in Pittsburgh, but he also understands the business of the NFL.

“You always want to finish what you start,” Dupree said after a 28-10 loss to the Ravens in Week 17. “That lets you know you had a good career. ... But at the end of the day, the new NFL, it’s business. Lot of stuff going on our team, got a lot of stuff that we need to fit on this team, too.”

If the Steelers are wise, they’ll make it their business to fit Dupree into their future plans.

Move on from expensive veterans

One of the most difficult decisions any team faces is deciding when to release veteran players who have been instrumental to building the franchise and maintaining the locker room culture. After 11 seasons with the Steelers, left guard Ramon Foster’s time with the organization could be up. Foster has 156 starts, including 11 in the postseason, since he joined the organization as an undrafted free agent in 2009, and he has been a full-time starter since midway through the 2010 season. Foster, who turns 34 next week, has one year left on his contract, and cutting him would save $4 million in cap space. That money could go to Dupree’s contract or toward signing free-agent lineman B.J. Finney. A reliable and versatile backup, Finney has 13 starts the past four seasons and is ready to make the leap to full-time starter. The Steelers could choose to move on from Foster in favor of the cheaper, 28-year-old Finney.

Another veteran who could be out the door is tight end Vance McDonald. In a 2019 that was billed to be a breakout season, McDonald had only 38 receptions for 273 yards and three touchdowns. It was a significant drop from the 50 receptions for 610 yards that he recorded the previous season. Part of that, of course, was a result of an offense that grossly underutilized its tight ends. The 29-year-old, who has two years left on his contract, comes with a cap hit of $7 million next season, and the Steelers can save $5.6 million in 2020 by cutting him before June 1. To replace McDonald, the Steelers could opt to re-sign Nick Vannett, whom they acquired in a trade with Seattle early in the season on a one-year deal. Vannett showed flashes this season, but like McDonald, he wasn’t used frequently. Signing Vannett would offer a cheaper alternative to McDonald, but the Steelers would still likely need to target a tight end in the draft.

Sign a veteran quarterback or add a quarterbacks coach

The next step in Roethlisberger’s rehabilitation from elbow surgery will come with a “significant” update from an early February checkup, Tomlin said Tuesday. That appointment should give Roethlisberger a clearer timeline on when he can return to throwing and other football activities. As it stands, it seems reasonable to expect Roethlisberger to participate in training camp, barring any setbacks. The Steelers, though, need some insurance. Roethlisberger will be 38 in March and is coming off major reconstructive surgery, and his young backups were largely ineffective in 2019. Signing a veteran quarterback in free agency -- one who has the trust of the coaching staff to change the call at the line -- is a necessary safety net to give a championship-caliber defense its best shot to be a Super Bowl contender in 2020.

“We are open to any and all options that is going to allow us to put the strongest football team that we can put on the field,” Tomlin said. “But to stand before you and act like I understand the depths of the veteran quarterback market would be an untruth.”

Even without a deep exploration of the veteran quarterback market, this much is clear: To sign one, the Steelers need far more cap space than they are projected to have. If they can’t free up the money, the Steelers could go another route to shore up the position group: hire a quarterbacks coach. In addition to being the offensive coordinator, Randy Fichtner is the designated position-group coach. Fichtner held the role in 2010-17 and retained it when he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018. It was easy enough to do both jobs with Roethlisberger as the quarterback, but when the Steelers were tasked with bringing along two young signal-callers this season, the need for a dedicated position coach became glaringly obvious. Tomlin said in his Tuesday news conference that he is open to the idea of hiring for the position.

Agree about Dupree but they finally had a good defense so I would hate to see that get messed up.
I think Ramone Fosters time is up and maybe even Pouncey. I would be ok in them seeing what they could get for him.
They also need to find a legit RB. Connor is a great story but he's injury prone.

100% agree.

Its seems that most that follow the Steelers believe they will franchise Dupree. But I hope they pass on that strategy. I believe the tag was quoted as costing $16 million? I believe the Steelers would help the team more by going after 2 free agents with that money. A WR, possibly a LB, and/or olinemen. What did ARob get when he hit the market, $42 million for 3 years, or $14M/year. Who would impact the outcome of games more if the Steelers had a competent QB playing? I believe a mid-top WR rather than a LB that had 1 good year out of how many... 4? Johnson, the rookie WR, will be a #1 or #2 WR next season, along with a healthy JuJu. Just need another #2 type WR to make the offense explosive again. So I believe the Steelers should try and sign Dupree to a 3-4 year contract at less than $10 million /year average. Dupree may not show the impact for other teams he has for the Steelers in 2019 and Dupree's agent likely knows that as well. I'd rather see the Steelers sign Suggs for $5 million and then use the rest of the $16 million for a WR or olinemen. Or both.

RB and the OL are concerns as well. I look for the Steelers to take an olinemen in the 2nd or 3rd rounds, but the Steelers have also had decent success with developing olinemen drafted in the later rounds.

Lots of scenerios for the Steeler to try and address their needs. But their needs are many so they will have a hard time addressing them all....

Again, as much crap Conner gets most cause he is from Pitt the Steelers aren’t dumping him. He will be their starting back in 2020. They aren’t drafting a RB with limited picks with Conner and taking Snell last year. They also aren’t investing money into a FA.

No, I'm looking at this. He's had 363 rushes over 3 years. Over that same time period, while the Steelers have supposed to have had one of the best OL in the NFL, Frank Gore has rushed 583 times for three different teams and he's 36. The best ability is availability and there's only 53 seats on the bench.

Fire sale!

Clean house! This 'team' blows chunks. If Ben can't be near 100% sell everyone and play third team scrubs for a couple of years until you can actually build a team. Of course, that would require an actual coach too. The Tomlin experiment has been over for a LONG time, IMHO. 'Player's coach' = undisciplined, whining losers.

Without a healthy Ben we don't have a QB, a RB, TE or an OL worth a wooden nickle. They would struggle to have a winning record in the MAC.

Sell the franchise! The Steelers are now the Saints of the 1970s and the Browns of forever. JUNK! Put your paper bags on your heads and forget the next decade. Bubby Brister and Kordell Stewart would be an upgrade for this lot of dipshits.

What second round wide receiver is out there that we can get to make an immediate impact. Metcalf this year was amazing.

Johnson really stepped up last year but tomlin philosophy is to throw the deep ball constantly. As the reporter above said the tight ends were grossly underutilized and tomlin is not going to change which is his downfall. So we need a deep threat.

Did you see that WR, can't remember his name, I believe on the Titans, that went near the end of the 2nd round in last year's draft. Couldn't be covered. Big, fast. The color guy had him as the 7th overall player. I believe he was the 9th WR taken, and Johnson was the 10th....?

Also, I believe Ben likes to throw to the TE's more than the two QB's the Steelers were forced to play. I don't blame this season's pattern of avoiding the TE's all on Tomlin. It would not hurt to draft a competent TE as well.....
