Stop trashing the backup QB

He was given no help by the receivers dropping passes, no running game, a joke of a snap count, etc. The coaches needed to have him ready to play. The snap count not being silent is pitiful. Also, Clifford should have played.
While not throwing perfect passes, I think more physical receivers (Godwin, A Robinson) may have come down with a few of the interceptions, if not broken them up. I think Dotson and Parker Washington both have great hands, but I'm not so sure their excellence extends to those 50-50 balls which are much more common with a younger and inexperienced QB.

Always the coaches right Roberson was lousy.
You have to have a contingency plan for when your QB goes down, a dozen plays that the backup is capable of performing. They didn’t. In fact they have a different cadence for the backup. It was a joke they were not able to run a play. That is not the QBs fault.

Actually, we could have gotten him more time in those games, we kept Clifford in for some reason until too late. That being said, I don't think 10 more snaps in each game would have prepared him for the brutal field position against and undefeated team in a very hostile environmen.
they were probably hiding him so a dirty team wouldnt know what would happen if clifford goes down
i will retain faith in yurcich to come up with a good gameplan, i think its salvageable. the defense is great and roberson has some good traits. would be much better if this came up in a season where running the ball was actually possible though.

And what should the coaches have done to get him ready? Let him play against Wiscy? Getting some snaps in a home game wouldn’t have gotten him ready for tonight.
You are right coaching was perfect again. This staff is poised to win back to back national titles... stop fan-boying it is another 4th quarter collapse against top 10 team. 1-10 now. If they couldn’t get him ready, why not recruit a better backup?

As bad as Roberson played, I don’t blame him. It was only a matter of time before this terrible running game would cost us a game. All year this line and TEs have not blocked well for the running game. Franklin insists on playing Cain who clearly is not the best option. Bottom line is this is on the coaching staff.

What about the coaches for not having him ready?
LOL, QB2 was "not ready" according to some, should be better by now "as a 3rd year" player by others and "doesn't have D1 talent" by others...some of which are mutually exclusive...and in many cases all 3 groups are the same people??? LOL

Recruiting is a fair point, although Levis theoretically was the recruited backup for this season...he understandably wanted to start and thus left.

Despite attempts to pin this on coaching or other factors, Occam's Razor suggests that Clifford is better than his current backup and that it cost PSU the game...period...it isn't complicated.

He was a four star. I never said the coaching was perfect, but to blame the coaches for every loss is just a weak argument. No coach would win back to back National championships at Penn State regardless of how many folks like you think a coach should be able to.

If we can freaking keep good coordinators, we should be a load in a couple of years. The recruiting class we have coming in is nasty + Yurcich’s system in place. Is Trautwein actually a good OL coach? The jury is out.

Roberson actually threw a good ball. A couple of drops and prep regarding snap counts really hurt him. He learned a ton and will look better now that he has seen real time.

My emotions got the best of me on Clifford and losing this game to that team. We were far better than Iowa and had a better gameplan. Mustipher then Clifford going down was tough. I hope they are back soon. Gotta win the east. We can beat OSU. This one one really got to me, but better days ahead.

If Strange caught the two he dropped Iowa would have been dangerously close to running out of time to win this one. I didn’t think we’d move the ball a ton with #2, but I really groaned after the first drop knowing the game was gonna be about the clock.
Exactly

We needed to get a transfer QB last spring and we didn’t. JF probably tried, but things obviously didn’t work out. We will still need one for next season. Hopefully, a guy with two years of eligibility.

Roberson was obviously bad. But what also has become obvious is that this is the worst stable of running backs this team has had in my lifetime.

Screw that…go with the young QB’s next year. With all the guys we’re losing, let’s play youth, lose some games, but build for the future.

I don't know. Levis transferred in February and this is October.. That is 8 months. Looked like Roberson never took a rep with the first team before. Oh there were the few against Ball State, I forgot.

Franklin failed in having this kid ready or a capable backup.
It is reasonable to assume that Roberson DID take many reps with the first team. Unless you know otherwise.

Yep, Franklin should have stood behind him and told him which receivers were open and which one to throw to. And then when Roberson missed by a wide margin the first few throws, Franklin, or Yurcich, should have just thrown the ball for him as well...........

Well still time for a Franklin to bring in a qb transfer for next season.

Yep, there are plenty of top QB's that have proven themselves that will leave top programs

Right. And have Allar go elsewhere.

Nope. Roberson has no business leading PSU. It’s that simple.

I never played football, but how many reps can the back-up quarterback get in practice when you considering the following?

1. Clifford is still learning a new offense.
2. The running game has needed a lot of work.
3. No bye-week up to this point.
4. Playing a relatively tough schedule up to this point.

I‘ll hang up and listen.
Agree.

Roberson looked good on the FG drive.

But we put him in a lot of bad spots. And when we had a chance to help him out, Strange delivered two key drops that would have moved the chains.

Agree with everything.

But we are not beating O$U. O$U is playoff bound.

The first one was a straightforward drop by Strange, but the second throw was significantly behind him. The field position was bad, but he nevertheless did have open receivers and just missed them... 🤷‍♂️

Clifford should have played? Do you know his injury? Are you a physician or orthopedist? Get out of here with that.

Backup QB was trash and was constantly throwing behind or over his targets. Yes this is on Franklin for not having a back up ready which was a known problem. But we can trash a trash QB.

He was in accurate, but they had him just try to hold on to the lead. The two drops by the TEs hurt.
They were 1st down yardage drops. That’s 6 more plays for the O. Less time for the D on the field and field position likely holds. They were devastating drops when the young QB needed catches.

We’re not doing it this year. We didn’t do it in 2016, 2017 and 2018….not sure what team you’re watching.

I think he was responding to the build for the future line specifically. Same thing as saying this (next) year just isn’t our year.

But he doesn’t build for the future every year. Unfortunately we have a lot of players leave early that forces him to play younger guys, but he doesn’t do it at the QB or RB position.

In today's college football you have to play young kids if they are ready. You're going to lose most of them after three years anyhow even if they're not top draft pick they declare and leave early or portal

He doesnt but fans say it every year.

Everyone deals with transfers. Roberson wasn’t good but it’s like they didn’t even have a Roberson package for this very real possibility. The fact that it took 9 false starts to stop trying to snap the ball with a clap is mind blowing. And I love JF.

How do you know what they had for Roberson? Sometimes players get in a game and freeze and play like crap regardless of what the coaches do….I know, mind blowing concept.

Second throw to Strange needs to be caught. Tough situation and a lot to expect from Roberson. He does not look like a long term answer, but let’s give the kid a shot before writing him off.

Why? He stunk. Criticism comes with the QB role at a big time college. If Clifford plays the whole game they kill them.

I didn’t say they didn’t, I said it’s like they didn’t based on the results. If they put something in place and the result was 9 false start penalties then clearly it wasn’t installed very well.

Regardless Roberson is a bad qb.

In fairness to Roberson, he never played a meaningful snap previously. I also think he was injured last season, which might have slowed his development. He should improve, but nobody knows how much right now.
At this point, I am not sure he’s the right fit for the MY offense.
