Story: Verkleeren discusses recruitment, Penn State commitment

His point is still correct: Manville is not in the 149-157 mix.

Wow...the article says that the other schools were offering a full ride. PSU in-state is about $27-30k when all is said and done with no aid. So many families at the youth and high school level put so much time and money into sports thinking the light at the end of the tunnel is that their kid will get that scholarship. This guy has the stones to take his chances walking on at PSU despite the other opportunities. Kudos to his parents for supporting him.
Gotta love the kid's spirit!

I wasn't correcting his point, just his math. I think Manville is a minimum 165 as well.
I don't know, he wasn't the slimmest in the singlet he was wearing. He may slim down quite a bit in the PSU room. Not throwing stones about the weight though ;)

I would agree with this. Most situations a full ride is just a guarantee that the kid is not laying out money. Then the school works the package - especially this late in the game.
Exactly. Also, schools like to include loans as part of their financial aid package, selling it as your not laying out the cash right now.

Just had a conversation about this. Spent tons of time on the youth circuit and have heard this opined before. This is a myth.

Most parents really put so much time and money into it so their kids get BETTER with the goal of being the best. A scholarship is just a byproduct of this. And when it comes time to go to college many are willing to continue to do the same thing.

It's a nice justification you use on yourself when you're putting out the cash early, but anyone who seriously believes that they are laying out money in a financially sound plan to reap a return during their college years is fiscally foolish.
Having coached youth sports for 15 years, from personal experience their are a lot of fiscally foolish families out there. Also, plenty of coaches who like to push the scholarship angle to convince parents to move to a different club.

I once had a father tell me his daughter was getting a soccer scholarship to college, she was in the 3rd grade at the time. She never made the high school varsity. She was an excellent soccer player for a 3rd grader. It seems that parents forget that their kids interests often change over the years and often being excellent before high school is frequently the result of a kid physically maturing early compared to their peers.

Possibly rolling redshirts??

Berge and Verk will almost certainly RS their first year, just based on who is ahead of them at 149 and 157. Nick Lee also seems likely to RS his first year, unless he can [a] beat out Cortez at 141, or make 133, which seems a stretch. One of Teasdale or RBY will likely go as a true frosh at 133, while the other will RS. They could reverse roles the following year, so that could help ease the logjam, but only for one season. There will still be overlap for multiple seasons.

No chance any of them grows into 165?

Possible for Berge, but probably not any of the other four guys mentioned. Even so, Joseph will still have two more years after Berge takes a RS year. The more likely scenario is that Berge or Verk replaces Retherford after a RS year, then Berge moves up to 157 to replace Nolf. Then at some point you add Manville and Joe Lee to the mix, probably somewhere in the 157 to 174 range. Lots of moving parts and, like I said earlier, will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

I see Manville with a similar path to starting as Matt Brown. Starting as a RS Sophmore after being behind a stud....Mark Hall seems likely to take an Olympic RS in the '19-20 season, so Manville/Cenzo could hold down 165/174 that year then Manville/Hall in 20-21 after Cenzo graduates.

One factor about Manville is that we don't know if the US Army will approve his ROTC deviating from the standard 4 years of college. They might, but none of us knows for sure, and things can change in either direction a few years from now.

If he reps the WCAP I'd bet they become a bit more flexible

Perhaps ... but I work with the US military professionally, and I wouldn't make any bets. He could win gold at 2017 Worlds and they'd see that as a marketing opportunity. Or, they could go hardline at any time between now and his graduation.

I know this isn't the topic, but I'm not sure we're giving Manville his due for beating Bey 2 straight to make a Senior Level World Team. I'm a huge Bey fan, and he looked in complete control the 2nd match.
I'm not saying he's gonna medal, but this is gigantic.

Yeah I was pretty shocked at how easily he handled Kamal in that second match. Wasn't even closer and Bey seemed to run out of ideas once he got down early.

Mystery is now solved regarding Jarod's selection of PSU. I recently learned from the HR that he will receive mid six figures in compensation from the NLWC slush fund in the years immediately following his graduation.

Yes, this was actually posted there. Following along El Jefe's advice, I usually try not to respond over there to anti-PSU stuff, but this was so laughable I could not resist. You can't make this sh*t up...

I just saw that! Unbelievable.... and according to some here, PSU fans are suppose to keep their mouths shut and let them spread that garbage. I'm glad you decided to have your say.

To be fair though, the Hawk fan did have second thoughts and deleted it from his post. He most likely felt like an idiot considering he's an adult and it made him out to be childlike in believing everything he is told. Unfortunately for him, someone quoted him before he could get rid of the proof that he is indeed the idiot he thought he was when he made the post.

I should've been clearer: didn't mean never reply to anything outrageous there. I've done that before.

What I meant was usually it'll have the same effect as telling your wife to calm down. If you're gonna do it, good luck, but at least be smart about when and how. And don't expect it to work.

(I will never try to correct them on Sandusky. That's 100% flaming us. They don't want to know any other POV.)

BTW, I don't buy the "all of wrestling reads HR" theory. If people are so imbecilic as to believe the Conspiracy Theory of the Century of the Week, there's no fixing that kind of stupid.

Not listed on the NLWC roster
I would guess we'd have to remove Frank from the roster. I know he wrestled under the NLWC at the Open, but I understand he'll be with the RTC at VT. I don't think he could represent them both. Titan Mercury seems to be in a different category that I don't understand.

Titan Mercury is not a training center. They provide financial support for certain wrestlers.

Just saw that post, and my God it's cretinous. So hard to not go over there and tweak him. It would've gone something like this:

Just for clarification: Did you hear Cael is paying a HS senior twice Snyder's Olympic Gold bonus, total? Or is that 2x Snyder for each of how many years?

Asking for some Bearded, McNasty friends who want to bask in the Glory, but only if someone can make it Raimo or at least throw them some Silva. Truth.

Not sure I believe that entirely. That many (any?) schools have a full ride out of their 9.9 max, just sitting around idly waiting for Verk to claim it? More likely it was combinations of aid package + loans that came out to 100% total.

Kinda like when Lawson transferred in and said he got a full ride ... anyone believe Cael spent 1.0 of his 9.9 on Lawson?

Not saying either is a liar, just that teenagers don't think that way.

Jefe, you're right...you wouldn't think that any elite schools would have enough money sitting around at this time of the year to offer a full ride, but Minny did. Here's a post from Larry Allar on The Guillotine describing the MN offer:

"He was offered 100% for 1 year and 80% the other 4. His diabetes and being typical teenager made his mom nervous about sending far away from home. Minnesota did a fantastic job recruiting him."

So, JV decided he just wanted to be Lion and near home...and was confident enough in his abilities to take no skolly money!!

Verk needs to stop running his mouth; he's going to ruin everything.

Hahah I can just see it now "Unfortunately I can't offer you a scholarship, but how does a cool half million sound, post-grad?" The scary thing is there are a handful of lunatics over there who actually believe this to be true.

So, when most of the wrestlers wear the Titan Mercury singlets, they're just indicating where they are getting support from, not where they're training. I know that DT is with Titan Mercury as well, but still has NLWC on his singlet.

Great article, but does anyone proofread these before they go up? There were a bunch of grammatical errors.
Dude, excuse me but the article was written by Tim Owen. Content fellas, content.

If you have a problem with grammatical errors read while pounding Margaritas. Golly.

I saw that and proceeded to blow coffee out my nose. It's getting hard to read that board anymore, and that's a shame.
