Marshall had 25 players, including all 3 qbs, portal out after losing their coach. They could not safely field a team. Their own conference punished them for backing out of their bowl game. What was the school supposed to do? This is another symptom of a broken system.

Programs aren't allowed to decline bowl bids. We all know this.
Maybe they should have treated their coach and players better so he didn't leave for a lesser program that he had to rebuild? Marshall knew they'd be fine when they made the decision. Everyone else managed.

Aren’t you the one who proclaims these are meaningless scrimmages? Why should the school play the bowl game if it’s unable to safely field the team?

They are
Because the conference gets money and it's the agreement that exists
Don't play but accept the fine

A next good step would be fining players for doing it. These punks get paid now, so play or pay up. Maybe stroke a check for the room and board and tuition they've been getting for free.

The aren't part of the program...their commitment runs through the end of the SunBelt CCG

What were they supposed to do?
Play...I dont believe anyone believes they couldn't field a team with 70+ kids available
Treat their coach better...research why he left
Accept the fine...they knew their obligation to the conference

If they weren't fined why would anyone go to a bowl moving forward?

You cannot play down all 3 qbs and 25 players in total. It is not safe.

How many QBs do they have? I promise you more than 3. There's teams that played 4 QBs this year. See some of the bowl games
Down 25 means 2nd string and 3rd string play...that's safe...they weren't playing Ohio State. They just didn't want to go.

That's the point. They're not and you're angry about it. You want it how it used to be. Full control by the program with no pay
It's a wonder anyone ever chose to play college football before NIL and the transfer portal. What an awful deal for the players! They probably had to beg kids to come out for the team to field a full roster.

From the interwebs.....

The Sun Belt Conference distributes revenues from their bowl games by redistributing the funds equally between member institutions24. The revenue includes event tickets, admission fees, TV, media, royalty rights, bowl game and event compensation, and all related revenues3.

I'm trying to understand beyond the scope of the articles author.

So, Marshall who is a member of the Sunbelt Conference was unable to represent their conference in the Independence Bowl against Army. Th Indy Bowl replaces Marshall with Louisiana Tech, who is a member of Conference USA.

Is this fine a defacto withholding of funds that were owed to the University by the Conference as part of their revenue distribution agreement? Was the conference financially penalized because they were unable to send a rep to participate in the Independence Bowl?

I'd like to learn more about the situation before formulating an opinion on this situation.

Nil contracts need forfeiture and chargeback clauses in them along with delayed payment clauses. Changing the portal period will help some.

It's not ignorance...its what some want. Him in particular
Now you are being an ass. Players playing in bowl games and receiving the benefits they did in pre-NIL days is nowhere close to slavery treatment.

Go ahead and report me. You should get a ban for your insult to those past real slaves and your doubling down on the claim.

Report you for what? I've never reported anyone. If you think I'm being an ass that's your opinion. You're wrong but a lot of you.
Players were completely controlled by the school who was profiting from them. Has been the case for years? It's sad that you defend that behavior and don't want individuals to have control over where they go for an education or to play football based on their initial decision.
Players should be paid...and well. Players shouldn't be restricted from going elsewhere--and never should have been
They were absolutely used and it was "free labor"--the right to obtain a degree for free doesn't alter that. Next you'll say they were given a place to stay and feed.

The portal period won't be changing--if anything it will just be larger
You all keep having this weird faith that the NCAA has any control. The courts are going to always side with the players.

Schools were profiting from the players? Oh no! You know who else the schools were profiting from? The rest of the student body, through tuition, room, and board.

Students to go school to prepare them for their career. They pay for that service.

Want a career in professional football? Go to school and learn how it is done, and benefit from the coaching, training, exposure, and free education. What an incredible deal it is for the student-athlete. NIL or no NIL.

You can tell it is was an incredible deal for the student-athlete, because thousands and thousands took that deal, well before the NIL nonsense came about.

They also didn’t renew Coach Huff’s contract who was well liked and was doing an excellent job, which added to the transfers.

Overall though impossible situation for Marshall and no sense in them trotting out 30 odd players.

Thei
Thousands upon thousands had no other option as the NFL prohibited players just out of HS from entering the draft. Let's not pretend that wasn't done to help colleges as well.

It's not an incredible deal...the athletes were bringing in more than they were getting in return. The court cases have proved that.

They still had 50 some scholarships players. They could have played. Take away all of our starters, both back and Beau and we can play without risk of injury. Hell, that's probably even what bowls should be if they going to exist. A chance for the kids that fought every day in practice to get some snaps.

You really think there are thousands upon thousands of kids that could have gone straight from high school to the NFL?

No...but how many have played football over the years? Would that have changed how the NFL handled the draft to be more like MLB and the NHL? Would that have lead to a developmental league in which they were paid? How would not having top players impact FBS...both popularity and financially?

Lots of queations created by the NCAA and NFL working together here.

Don't know how to link article but Marshall said they were down to 43 players when the portal players opted out. This is the Sunbelts way of telling Marshall they don't care about player safety, only the almighty conference payout lost. Marshall should tell them to shove it up their azz.

43 players with 25 in the portal doesn't add up at all.
Marshall had an obligation to play in the bowl game as we discuss every year when people claim X should skip a bowl game. FSU being a prime example.
Marshall tells them what then? They become an Independent? Does the Sun Belt care? Marshall needs the Sun Belt more than they need Marshall. Marshall knew by declining the bid there would be ramifications.
Let me ask you this...if you run a bowl would you want to have a deal with the SunBelt knowing Marshall bailed? I wouldn't. It would happen again.
This had to happen
And again 43 doesn't make any sense. Low end, they probably had close to 60 ignoring walk ons....most teams have 100 kids easily. If FSU found kids to play last year Marshall could have.
Or hell maybe Marshall just needs to treat their staff better

They were penalized for protecting the health and safety of their student athletes. I love college football, but it is in drastic need of reorganization.
The problem isn’t college football per se, it is the over-educated idiots running most American colleges. This is a prime example of their idiocy. Another would be forcing women to accept men in their locker rooms and competing in their sports. Change is in the air however.
