Suriano..........

PSU had no one at 125 this past year(and, no one at 133) and still had the championship wrapped up before the championship round.

That's all nice, but 184 is cleared out for Martin. 197 is cleared out for Moore. Hayes is back. Possibly add McKenna.

You're just choosing to be ignorant if you think PSU is a comfortable favorite.

The better tOSU gets against the field, the more the NCAA Championships resemble last year's Big Tens.

I have high hopes for Cutch or Cassar to add points, but not so much Cortez. Keener won't get you much of anything.

What are your projected finishes for each weight for PSU and tOSU?

Keener will get some points at nationals with a chance of making the podium. Figure a year in the PSU room will help plus some guys clearing out of 133. Definitely more than what we got from 133 last year.

Nationals will still be the tremendous time it always is but that added excitement of going for the all time points record was really something I was looking forward to.. I still think PSU is the favorite. We went in last year with no one at 25 or 33 and won handily.. Nevills should score more this year, Keener will earn us some points.. Cutch has a shot at the podium this year. Still like our chances for the title, but the all time points record is likely out of reach..

Penn State has won 6 out of the last 7 national championships. Wake me up the next time they fail to win one. If you want to worry your pretty little heart about how PSU can somehow win this season w/o Suriano, then be my guest. I'm in the camp that believes PSU has the best wrestling roster this season with or without Suriano.

We got 8.5 points for 125,133,141 and 197 combined and still won by 36 points. I'll just leave it at that.

Exactly. Don't understand all the angst about Suriano. Yeah, PSU will have a void at 125 this season but they had a void at 125 during the national championship last season and still won comfortably. Yeah, no Suriano probably means not setting the record for most points in the national tournament but like Jimmy Volmer always says- whomptie freakin dee. Just win the national championship. Don't really care if they set the point record or not.

I think the "angst" is that our scoring wrestlers basically had a perfect run in 2017. As good as they are, the probability of that happening again is not great. See 2017 big 10 tournament as exhibit A.

I care about the point record and I think a lot of other people do, also. It's a big deal.

I agree the scorers did exceptionally well, but Hall went Win-TF-MD-Win-Win for 2.5 bonus points. I can see him improving on that now that he's grown (growing) into a true 174.

Why is it a big deal? Will they retroactively award Penn State more national championships if they set the point record? Will the wrestling program receive some sort of financial prize from the NCAA if they set the point total? Didn't think so. Just win the national championship. If they can set the point record in doing so, then great but I'm not going to cry in my beer if they don't. Would you complain if the football team won the national championship this season but only beat their opponent by 7 points instead of 14?

sure, but the probability of all 5 champions repeating is not high.

All well and good if Ohio State had JRod, Jake Ryan and Cody Burcher manning 125, 157 and 165 again - but they won't and look to have upgraded at all 3 if NATO can suck down. That will narrow the gap.

It would help if McCutcheon ( or Cassar) breaks through. If that happens, I think we again become a very solid favorite.

So PSU should petition the B10 to let Suriano use 2018 and 2019 as his 2 remaining years?

Man, Nick was a total beast. 4 years of that was going to be a great thing. I think he was the reason why Spencer decided to go to Iowa and not PSU. If someone is unhappy and doesn't want to be there, that's not a good thing. It's both for both sides. He's going to do really well because he's a total talent, just hate losing him.

Until his name was off the roster, I held out the slimmest of hopes they could work things out. There are other kids working their butt off who want to represent PSU so I will focus on learning more about them now.

Is that tweet even real? If you go to the twitter account, the tweet is not there.

I think Spencer felt that Iowa was the best fit - Nick or no Nick. There was nothing about his recruitment process that showed anything other than a deliberative well thought-out decision. Sucks for us, but probably similar to Mark Hall's decision to come here - sometimes you just know a place is a perfect fit for you.

At the time, Suriano would've gone 133 if Lee came to PSU. And seriously, 3x cadet/junior world champ Spencer Lee doubts he can make a starting lineup?

Um, maybe picking Iowa instead of PSU would challenge the "well thought out decision" comment . All jokes aside, I was looking forward to seeing who got the best of that rivalry. It would have been great to see it in Rec Hall and Carver. Now instead, I'll have to watch it on the BTN on a Friday night. These are kids, I don't want to come across as challenging their decision making. This is entertainment for me, not my livelihood. I wish we had both and now we have neither.

See my above post to pick up on my demeanor here, but there is absolutely no way you can predict where these guys would have been slotted or how they felt about their competition. Nick has beaten Spencer before. Not a whole lot of losses on that kid's record.

No way to predict slotting? OK, so let's turn that around the other way: when Cael had Nick committed and was pursuing Spencer (recall PSU was his #2 choice, so PSU did nearly land both), what do you think Cael's plan was?

During their overlap years (ie, not including shirts) there are really only 3 options: Spencer 125 Nick 133; Nick 125 Spencer 133; or they compete head to head with the loser sitting. One seems a lot more likely than the others.

If we were to hypothesize maybe Nick could've gone 141, unlikely as that seems, that deconflicts Spencer even more.

Regarding Spencer's feelings about the competition: same kid who won junior worlds while cadet aged. Not someone who shrinks from a challenge.
