Tatoo's - yes or no, when is it too much?

I am anti tattoo. They can look beautiful today and horrendous years from now.

Question for the board. Sitting at swim team practice yesterday watching my kid swim. Women next to me is sitting there. She appears to be early 20's. Has shorts on. On her right outer thigh is a tatoo. Tatoo is very large, goes from underneath her shorts nearly down to about 1-2" above her kneecap. I would say probably a good 8" long and the entire width of her outer thigh. The tatoo is of a skeleton skull with the brain part of the skull having some design that was colored that looked like either an outer space or underwater landscape.

So i am not sure who would find that attractive. A massive tatoo on your entire outer thigh and of a skull? What am i missing.

A well placed small flower or butterfly on a woman used to be nice. Now they became canvasses and it's crass.

I have quite a few. Got most while I was in the navy. I pretty much have one from e each place I was stationed... To this generation tattoos are like man buns.. You're just gonna have to deal with it..

Wife had a dark scar on her shoulder from a mole she had removed that left an ugly raised and discolored mark when it was gone. She was always embarrassed by it and would try to wear sleeves to cover it.
She ended up getting a tattoo of some rose petals where the old scar was part of the new tattoo. She is now much more confident and wearing outfits with bare shoulders and more skin showing.

That tattoo was a win for sure and definitely enhanced the original because she's wearing less clothing now. So it's possible.

I saw a story on TV once about a woman that got a mastectomy got a tattoo in the same place so that sounds similar. I can understand something like that or your wife. But for a normal young person with normal young person skin I just can't relate. If it ain't broke why try to fix it? And in addition to that, it's so permanent. I don't even want to think about what I'd be walking around with today if I got a tattoo when I was 20.

If you are in a creative field, they are more the norm than not. And speaking of Norm, I’ll tie this thread to the Cheers thread.....

I mentioned tats in the creative field as an expectation. It reminds me of the Cheers episode when Norm got into interior design and pretended to be gay to land work. None of his clients would hire a straight interior designer.
I thought you were going to talk about the tattoos Norm and Cliff got in the penultimate episode. Cliff’s: “I love Vera.” Norm’s: “God Bless the U.S. Postal Service.”

I'm fine with tattoos, depending on where they are. I prefer that clothes cover them on women, arms being the lone exception.

Maybe. But there was no reaction from either one of them so I guess she got her point across.

Or maybe they were actually better than her and took the high road. Obviously better than me because I would have gone scorched earth on her.

Just completed a temporary job with a national company. The woman head of the AP department had a tat across her upper chest that read "Prepare to Die" or something close to that.
"Prepare to Die" LOL. That would look just lovely paired with a hot pink blouse featuring a sweetheart neckline.

Imagine the tattoo messages in her nether regions.

Taste-wise, I don't care too much if they're subtle and easily concealable--basically something more for the person whose body it is than a statement to the rest of the world. I think most add little or nothing appearance-wise and I've seen way more I'd consider subtractions than additions.

Gladly, the tattoo thing really isn't something I have to care about right now. Ink all you want. I'll like it if it's cool, I won't if it's not and I really don't have to care right now. Your body and not mine (or one I have a personal interest in).

Tattoos are a person preference .. Just like being an overweight,, balding,, so much chest and back hair you look like a ape, man..its funny we're gonna critique women who want tats..

I'm not a huge fan, but maybe a little one in the right place isn't so bad:

That's not so bad, how about a little more?

Would adding one more hurt?

We live in different times now. If you are ever in this situation and feel like going scorched earth, consider she might have a Glock in her purse and is ready to use it.

Walking away is a better idea.

I remember sitting in a barber shop hearing this same kind of whining about long hair in the 60's....HS football coach wigged out on stage about team members wearing bell bottom pants during the sports assembly.....You weren't handed your letter on stage and had to pick it up in the office..... Opinions are like anal orifices......everybody has one.....LOL
Long hair can be cut.

I have no problem with tattoos, BUT an athlete who wants more money for playing FB , BB or whatever. NO money no tats.

Now imagine all those same pictures but without the tattoos. Do the tattoos make it better, worse or the same?

Long hair can be cut.

Exactly. You can change your hairstyle. Or your clothes. Or your jewelry. Or your makeup.

It seems crazy to me to put something on your body that you know will either (a) be permanent or (b) you can get taken off but only with a lot of expense and pain (from what I've read) and even then it may not look like it was before you got it.

I don’t get them. Generally for me, they run the gamut from looking silly to looking trashy. I’m not sure I understood the purpose of them.

I was sitting at a bar with a girl one night, drinking heavily. She came up with the idea of going to get tattoos. Sounded good at the moment.

She got a tramp stamp, I got my daughter's initials and D.O.B. on my upper right arm.

I want one more, something OSU related. But not the standard Block O or Brutus. I've been pondering it for 15 years.

or inserting big washers into earlobes

Yea those huge holes in the ears are ridiculous. Its not like having a piercing that will eventually close, if you want that closed you have to get plastic surgery. Stupid.
Besides that I have this strong urge to try and throw something through the opening. Maybe I'll win a prize. :)

I'm a big fan of tats and I'm older, clean cut, middle/upper middle class white guy with four kids. Have the chipmunk on my left arm and two personal ones (no shows) for my wife on my waist. She has a couple of no shows too that are beautiful. I like the experience of getting one - its pure endorphins. Getting another one soon.
