But, that was last year and this year they are a gazillion times better because .... well ... um .... because Temple fans say they are.

I keep saying they are not going to score more than 10 against this defense.

It's certainly fair to expect this will be a defensive game. 21 points by either team may win it.

I would guess the PSU O is going to have a lot of trouble, especially this early in the season, sustaining drives against that experienced Temple D. PSU's best hope of scoring points will be big plays -- a little like Pinstripe Bowl last year.

I don't see PSU scoring a lot though. Still too much inexperience on the OL. And turnovers are likely with a lot of young skill players.

Anyone remember how many yards PSU ran for against that vaunted Temple D last year?

Here is why Temple fans are optimistic. Robbie Anderson back. Jahad Thomas first camp at HB...converted in camp last year. Colin Thompson TE healthy and participating in first camp. New qb coach for PJ Walker with tons of NFL experience. More experience on the O-line. Last year Temple's two starting guards were playing their first years at O line. Frankly, temple just has more quality depth this year on O too.

Should be a fun game!

For sake of arguing, let's assume PSU and Temple were very similar teams. Both struggled on offense primarily due to the offensive line. Both had good defenses. Now assume both stay relative to each other in terms of losses due to graduation, new players and general improvement due to another year of experience. Who wins all things being equal. To have Temple winning they must improve much more than PSU or PSU has to regress. What do you think is most likely?

Penn State could lose if they turn the ball over multiple times and miss a couple of field goals. If both teams play their game, Penn State will win.

You can't hate someone with special needs.
Didn't a Temple poster a few days ago call you the worst poster on BWI? I was just playing off that.
Yes. I realized that and thought it was funny. That's why I gave you a "like" for it.

Your next meaningful post will be your first.

Actually, let's not shoot for the stars quite yet. Your next post containing a discernible fact will be your first.

16k and counting...

TU has added some significant pieces to the offense via transfers, recruiting and, well, whatever you want to call what happened to Robbie Anderson.

Anderson was probably the most dynamic and gifted receiver we'd had in many years before having to leave the team last year due to academics. He is back now and, if reports from camp are accurate, better than ever. An NFL caliber talent... one of several on this Temple team.

In addition to Anderson, the offense adds:

- Colin Thompson, the 4 star TE who transferred from UF following a foot injury and is finally completely healthy and expected to make a big impact.
- Adonis Jennings, the 4 star WR who transferred from Pitt after playing for the Panthers as a true freshman (was projected to start as a sophomore) and a received hardship waiver to be closer to his family.
- TJ Simmons, the 4 star RB who is expected to make an immediate impact as a true freshman.
- Ryquell Armstead, the 3 star RB who is expected to make an immediate impact as a true freshman.

Not to mention that the entire OL is back, and is anchored by NFL-bound Rimington Award candidate Kyle Friend. While this is likely our greatest weakness, you HAVE to assume they'll be improved after returning everyone and adding depth via some quality recruiting the past 2 years, including 3 star James McHale and 4 star Aaron Ruff.

Now all of the above can only help the talented Owls' junior QB PJ Walker, who is a proven play-maker who just didn't have the protection, run game or talent at receiver to shine last year.

The defense speaks for itself, and has 5-6 guys that project to be on NFL rosters next year.

Of course, the worst poster on BWI knows none of this, and would like to keep it that way (while barreling his way towards 17k posts).

Yes. They are optimistic. If they were realistic they would understand that they have less talent at nearly every position and less depth across the board. They would also realize that they will get blown out.

Temple will be lucky to get to 200 yards...Total offense. Last year they only had 248 and 5 turnovers. I expect our defense to be better. Good luck.

They're in for a rough day, well, a rough year actually. Temple is likely to be a 5-7 football team. They are what they are, and what they have always been. A football team with no history and no hope. All the bluster from their few fans won't change that. They've played in 4 bowls games and their biggest win was the Garden State 35 years ago. They've been ranked in the final top 20 once in their history (#17 in 1979). Sadly for them, in that 1979 season, when they went 10-2 and won the Garden State Bowl, they still could not beat an average (8-4) Penn State team, losing 22-7. There was talk about them giving up football a few years ago and concentrating on basketball, a sport they are good at. They should have done it.

Tuny, tuny tuny, to get respect you have to give respect.

Temple is a much improved program. It started with Golden, continued through Addazio and now rests on Rhule's shoulders.

You offer a litany of reasons why TU will be better, including how the OL should be better with another year of maturity. Hate to break it to you, but the same applies to PSU, correct? Both OL struggled last year, but one team ran significantly more effectively than the other, AND IT WASN'T TU. (Fact)

TU has added some formerly highly sought after transfers, huh? If you are a long-time observer of FB like I am, you'll note that not a lot of transfers make huge impacts. Will they be difference-makers? We'll see, but PSU added a lot of talent, too, including possible transfer starters along the OL. Of course, they might not pan out as stated above. However, you might want to acknowledge this so as to not be intellectually dishonest in your TU-centric thinking.

You cite "rumors from camp" and have the nads to call out someone who "lacks facts"? "Rumors" from the Lion camp indicate our DEs in 2015 are an upgrade over 2014? How will TU manhandle the same defense that stifled it? See how this works, yet?

I expect a good ball game, but fewer mistakes from both squads (8 TOs in 2014) . Don't forget, PSU gave Temple a couple short fields last year with TOs. Still didn't matter. Hackenberg played what appeared to me his worst game ever vs. TU. Part of that was TU, part was probably the weather and how beat up he was by that point in the season. It's probably worth noting that in last year's opener, UCF sold out to shut down PSU running game and gave up the greatest passing day (450+yards) in PSU history.

And while it will be in Philly, it'll be at least 50-50 fans, though probably more PSU fans will show up. And if PSU can show up in Ireland for an early wake-up call against UCF, I don't think they'll blanche at the sight of the Owls. I personally see something along the line of last year's game, 28-10. Mistakes, penalties and injuries will hopefully play a small role. If TU makes fewer mistakes and fewer TOs it'll be closer. However, PSU's D was among the best in the NATION last year, and it may very well be better. Of course, it's likely that yours will improve as well. But PSU moved the ball effectively last year, and hurt itself with TOs as well, but fewer than TU.

For TU to win, it will likely take a perfect game. And that typically DOES NOT happen in week 1 for anyone. Even you can (probably) acknowledge this. TU has a much smaller margin for error than PSU.

So, you want respect? Go back to whatever passes for a TU board and pray that somehow, someway, TU beats PSU for the first time since the USS Arizona was afloat. Until then, please stop wasting your time lecturing anyone on our board on respect.

Very well said.

I agree with Bosco....Temple will score 10 pts MAX....PSU will put at least 3 6's plus 1, and at least 1 FG on the board...minimum 2 TD win for PSU. 250+ in the air...150+ on the ground for us...mark it.

I totally agree with your point about respect. Many Temple & Rutgers fans come on this Board acting like their teams have accomplished something. They have not. Until they do, all the yapping does nothing but make them look like petulant children.

I hope one of the Temple fans here saves this post... :)

I think you guys are in for a good year. I don't think you'll get PSU in the opener, but you have a 10 win team on your hands if they can make something of the offense. Defense should be sound; they'll give up some yards but clamp down to prevent a lot of scoring. PSU fans are quite familiar with the style of play. I'm curious to see your freshman RB and if he can prove to be a bit of a playmaker, you guys should be able to get the offense moving enough to win a lot of games. IMO, you should be excited heading into this season.

An awful lot of analysis on this tread. Probably too much (including my own post).

Really it boils down to:
1) Last year's game was close and competitive, a 1 TD affair until Temple threw a pick-six in the 4Q. That pretty much ended it the way the PSU D was playing.
2) Temple and PSU should both be better this year and maybe a lot better.

Other than that, probably too many unknowns to guess how it will turn out. Early season games typically don't follow predictions anyway. Case in point -- PSU USF last year, which looked to everybody like a tight defensive contest and then turned out to be the opposite.

You're still missing what I've been saying.

You are making wild predictions about the outcome of the game without doing ANY due diligence looking into the opponent you face. It's completely foolish and a waste of everyone's time who comes to these boards.

Speaking of due diligence, I noticed that your own HC was recently quoted as saying that your JUCO transfer LT, Paris Palmer, still isn't up to speed. I've heard that LT is a somewhat important position in modern football, but to you I'm sure that means nothing. Why? Because PENN STATE. That's why.

Worst poster on BWI. Hands down.

The rest of you seem mostly reasonable about the outcome and some have even done their due diligence on the Owls; which is what I'd expect from a seasoned CFB fan base.

What does that have to do with the Temple team PSU is facing THIS YEAR?

I hope that the above reflect Penn State's game week preparation. If so, Owls win easy.

My daughter goes to Temple and we went down for a game last year. We got really close to the field and I was very surprised at the size of the Temple wide receivers. They had two guys split who had to be 6'4" - 6'5". Pretty quick too. If they had any sort of a QB who could throw a good ball to these giants they could make some plays.

Not just BWI, possibly all of rivals!
To be the worst on all of Rivals would be my dream. Of course, there is a lot of competition, mostly from Temple fans who think they have a chance to stay within 21 points of us. They are even more clueless than I usually am. In all seriousness, those who think I know nothing about the Temple football team could not be more wrong. Based upon what I know, I am sticking with my prediction of a 21+ point Penn State win. If our margin of victory is less, it will not bother me at all. We will not be playing for a National Championship this year so as long as we win, I really don't care what the score is. In the end, we will win because we are Penn State and they are Temple. It's as simple as that.

If so, Owls win easy.

Sure.... means nothing at all. It certainly won't be weighing on their mind. It's absolutely no indication of this year's teams, as they are entirely different than last year's team. It certainly hasn't affected recruiting, as Temple has been crushing PSU in recruiting lately. In addition to all that, Temple gains scholarship players this year and has the best coaches that money can buy. Likely Temple will beat PSU, and go on to win the national championship.

Here's the difference as I see it: reports from camp indicate that several of the skill players that TU has added on offense are projected to step in and start right away over players who started at those positions last year and are still on the team.

This is especially true at wide receiver where guys who started last year are now projecting at 2nd and even 3rd string. One of the projected starters, as I mentioned, had to leave TU for a year but the year prior put up one of the better seasons a Temple WR has ever had. The other played as a true freshman last year at Pitt, and was a projected starter there going into this year (before he transferred and was granted a hardship waiver).

Likewise, our top RB from 2 years ago just moved to OLB because he was literally 5th on the depth chart this camp.

This all indicates to me that our starters at WR, TE and RB this year represent significant upgrades over what we had last year.

Can PSU say the same about the players you've brought in on offense (honest question)? I haven't heard much aside from Paris Palmer, but maybe you're hearing something I'm not. Palmer looks like the starter at LT, but clearly is not up to speed yet based on Franklin's comments.

It's clear that both teams will have strong defenses (with PSU having the advantage), so the game will likely be decided by which offense has improved the most, and of course special teams.

Speaking of special teams, we both have issues at kicker, but I have to think we have the advantage there, with PSU having no one that has kicked at the college level previously.

Fairgambit, read the above two posts. Then read them again, slowly. This is called being a good, analytical fan. Try it some time.

Those guys may not even see the field this year, as we've added receivers in the same height range, but faster and more skilled, that have pushed them back on the depth chart.

Sure.... means nothing at all.
Well, Rutgers will have something to say about that.:)
