Good grief. Holy frijole. Did anyone (OSU fans here?) actually watch this happen?

Last Friday in East Lansing:

"No. 13 junior Te’Shan Campbell lost his match to Michigan State’s Austin Hiles after he was disqualified for accumulating five stalling calls. This was Campbell’s fourth loss in a row."

How did he manage to pull that off??

Suddenly I know I'll feel disappointed if Joseph doesn't pin him.

It was robbery.

Burcher wrestled against Purdue, however. Campbell seems huge to me. 165 might be a large pull.

expect to see a similar approach on saturday night ... but i doubt the ref will have the balls to DQ him in such a big meet

If he keeps backing up out of bounds, ref will have no choice. That was ridiculous.

Michigan State kid has 0 takedowns and was rewarded 5 stalling call points. I’ve never seen anything like it. All he was doing was putting his weight forward and punching forward with Campbell, not even shooting , and they kept calling it. Now saying that, Campbell’s strategy this year has been to completely commit to riding the entire period he’s on top, as that is his easily most comfortable and dominant position. When he’s scored in bunches this year, it’s been from the top position. The adjustment we will probably see moving forward is for he to expend more energy on his feet and spread out through all 3 periods, versus going all in for 1 period where he’s been expending all his energy commiting to the one position. It’s killing him, and leaving him with ABSOLUTELY NO ENERGY going into the 3rd period. He has terrific defense, strategically he needs to approach every match looking to win 5-2 versus going for big moves on top and killing himself cardiovascularly.

Pace yourself on top? Nah

A lot of Pitt people were happy he left the Pitt program. Can't say I agree with 5 stall calls with no takedowns, but the kid has had an interesting career. Came out of nowhere to win states his senior year.

Maybe the ref will be Nate Chapman.
We all know how he steps up big to the big moment.

Yes. I did laugh out loud as I typed that.

Maybe Jeff Cook?
Oh, never mind. I keep spilling my coffee typing this.

Campbell kept backing out of bounds, and the stall calls were actually called correctly, according to the stalling rules. Sounds like it was the perfect time for the MSU kid to hit a superduck! ;)

And he only dropped one spot to 14th in the rankings? Holy smokes, is 165 that weak?

That's the funny thing about rankings. If you lose to a complete nobody, it's almost like it doesn't count. If you lose to a wrestler ranked, but lower than you, a whole bunch of guys might slide ahead.

Interesting. Why were they happy to see him leave? Probably their best wrestler after Solomon and Forys.

Considering how hard it is to get a stalling DQ, if you do, you should get bounced from the rankings for 1-2 weeks.

I think I remember that he had a medical issue that he only got under control his senior year, which is why he came out of nowhere to win the state title. Everybody thought he had a super high ceiling because once he got whatever it was that was the issue under control he was fantastic. I don't know, if I am remembering that correctly, maybe whatever the problem was has resurfaced and it's the root of what seems like a collapse over the last month.

Good memory -- stomach ulcers.

I suspect it might be too much cutting for too long. He seemed awfully solid as a HS 170, dropped to 165 at Pitt for a couple years. then got put on the Max Deadlift program in Columbus.

I really wanted Isaiah White to work out for us at 165 - and that was the plan; for him to spend a year at Notre Dame College (in NE Ohio), then transfer to Columbus.
Not sure why / how that fell apart. Probably none of my business. But, I was bummed when I heard we were taking a transfer from Pitt for 165 and I heard whispers that the Isaiah White plan was dead.

I like Campbell, but I am not sure he has enough from neutral to AA. But, his top game gives him a 'chance' to pull some upsets.

He wrestled Marinelli pretty tough - even rode him out for a period. Then he has looked very mediocre since.
I expect V Joseph to win by bonus, but probably major. Campbell can slow down the match enough to avoid tech.

It was bad on both sides. Campbell did nothing and did retreat, but all the MSU kid did was lock up and push, particularly when he saw he would be rewarded with such tactics. A bizarre match.

kid is using the iowa style.....said style gets 10k to big home matches in 2018.....has the largest fan base on the interwebs......

Anyone see this bout. Just curious...as I have not.

The rules do allow for some judgment by the official, though the guy doing the pushing/pulling can be called for stalling, per these rules (among others);

Art. 6. Stalling by Backing Up. Continually backing away from the opponent
without creating offensive action.
Art. 10. Stalling by Pushing or Pulling. Pushing or pulling the opponent out of
bounds so as to force a restart.

Was the MSU wrestler tagged with any stalling calls at all? Was Campbell backing up each and every time, or was the MSU wrestler pushing him out, without shooting (making an offensive move) himself?

Again, just asking...thanks, in advance for any insight...

Ben Askren put it best in his podcast. In a nutshell he said that Campbell was giving very little resistance to being pushed out with the underhook. I saw the match, and that pretty well sums it up.

I haven't missed a session at AA or AAA states in about 18 years (I know that pales in comparison to some). When I saw Campbell, I was blown away at his athleticism. It did seem like he came out of no where, as I didn't know his story of medical issues. His wrestling was a bit unpolished, but, the athletic ability was off the charts. I wasn't surprised at all to see him on the national radar in college.

Thanks. Still gotta shoot every once in a while, regardless of what Askren said.

Just asking for consistency-sake. Double-stalls are an option, as are stalls on the guy doing the pushing. Still would like to know if the MSU wrestler was making any offensive moves...

Not that I can recall Roar. He basically went from down 0-2 at the end of the 2nd period to tied 2-2 and then winning 3-2 in OT without a legitimate shot attempt, just pushing forward.
You should watch the match if you get a chance. Ryan really lit into the ref after the first stall call. Now I'm not saying that had anything to do with any of the subsequent calls(and lack of stall calls on MSU), but man that fist was flying up pretty quickly, and against only one team after that.
