Yeah, we are in there. Twice.

It's hard to imagine a coach with a better collection of uncrowned teams than Joe Paterno. His teams occupy two of the top three spots on this list and his '68, '69, '73, '77, and '78 teams went a combined 56-2 and all had SRS ratings above 20, but none won a title. Of those, only the '78 team even played for one.
Yes, that 1994 team was one for the ages for sure!

I noticed we're also on the other side of the coin in '86 when it's felt OK "deserved" to win. They're also listed a couple times as should have beens.

Probably best offense ever in college football

I totally agree. I have watched a lot of CFB over the last 50+ years and there is no question in my mind that offense may never be duplicated again. Incredibly balanced as one the best, if not the best, running attacks as well passing attacks that season in the country.

The defense never got the credit they deserved because they had to spend so much time on the field. Wasn't the average scoring drive time that season something like around 2 minutes?

This well researched article actually shows USC as the team who lost to Ohio St when it was really Miami. That Hurricanes team was absolutely loaded. Surprised they aren't at 1 or 2. I like seeing us there for sure. That '94 team got screwed when JoePa chose not to run the score up and we got bumped down against either Indiana or Illinois, I forget which. I think they got a late score or two that made it look much closer than it was.

That was against Indiana. The game against Illinois we had to come back from being down 3 scores and that game, along with the late IU garbage scores and pity Osborne sentiment, is what cost PSU a deserved NC.

The article isn't talking about who lost the actual mythical national title game.. it's talking about great teams that didn't win or get voted as the national champion. This along with last year's playoff results, should blatantly point out why there should be a playoff and why where should've been one starting a long time ago. I can't wait to watch Penn State be part of one some day.
