Is there any doubt now after two games? With Carter at DE in the first half we gave up 24 points, and with Carter back at LB, INSTEAD of 0(who was a liability all day long, worse than 43), we give up 3, and that mainly because of an awful kickoff out of bounds. Move Smith Vilbert to the 1s, and play Abdul Carter back at his original LB spot, then turn him loose occasionally on blitzes.

I think this is a great observation. He’s just not a DE. And he’s not Parsons. Not everybody can transition from one position to another, even if they were great at the initial position. And speaking of Rojas, I love his potential, but for as many good plays he makes, he the misses tackles because he refuses to wrap up the ball carrier looking for the big hit instead.

Surely that was the one and only variable that changed in the second half
No, it wasn't. Allen moved Cam to the Lion and Wheatley played his natural safety position. Also Durant began to win at the line of scrimmage forcing them to obvious pass downs. They BADLY, I MEAN BADLY need Winston back on the field. Cam is not nearly as good as corner as he is at the Lion, and that also cost us in the first half.

A final thought. That Bowling Green offensive line is in the top 10 in the nation. They were phenomenal and probably better than any team left on our schedule not named Ohio State.

I was being sarcastic. 2 games, one of which was poor by the defense in general, isn't really sufficient to tell how the switch has gone. Especially with a new DC with a less aggressive approach than Manny Diaz. It already appears our sacks and TFLs will be down this year, but again it's early so that could change.

Am I the only one that thought he played a hell of a game today? Outside of the Rojas INT, the only playmaker on defense was Carter.

7 tackles, 5 solo. 1 TFL. 1 pass deflected.

Not sure he had a stat line that good last year.

He draws some double teams. He gets washed out sometimes as well. He's affecting how teams scheme.

The problem is even if Abdul is attracting extra attention or another blocker, nobody has shown the ability to get home and sack the QB. The whole group was expected to do big things...and DDS, especially, continues to be a disappointment. No sacks vs BG is a joke.

I'm beginning to wonder if they even teach that anymore it's not just Rojas, I saw it all over the field yesterday. Not getting square and those attempts at reaching arm tackles were terrible.

How'd my son do kicking yesterday? Mrs. S

Carter played a few snaps at LB in the second half but played most at DE

And i would argue one bad half. How many yards for BG after halftime? 90?

Don't let facts get in the waybof a good narrative.
I don't understand the concern about the pass rush honestly
Against Greene we simply decided to maintain containment and force him to throw the ball
BGSU was quick throws all day--how are we supposed to get sacks? lol

Our players, our scheme, it's forcing teams to play a certain way. BG had a great half of football, more so because their QB got hot and our defense was late on some plays. We then shut it down. Did they have 75 yards of offense in the 2nd half? They kicked a FG.

I have zero issues with negative posts IF ITS TRUE. Carter had a great stat sheet yesterday AT DEFENSIVE END. How many snaps did he play at LB? If you take out 3rd down pass rushing, my count was zero (but I could have missed some). It's not our fault the ball comes out in 2.5 seconds and that is nearly unsackable. It's a near unsustainable strategy.

I don't know how much time is spent in practice on live tackling. Tackling stable pieces of equipment in practice can't help your technique in a game when trying to square up & wrap up on a player who is moving.
There aren't many teams (college or pro) who excel at tackling anymore.

We just sent 2 pass rushers to the NFL. I don't remember anybody expecting "big things" from this group. Maybe "high hopes, the talent is there". DDS draws a lot of doubles. Teams are throwing FAST. See below.

Don't let facts get in the waybof a good narrative.
Narratives? Lol ok. DDS was a 5 star...Vanover was a good recruit. Yes, programs of our size and scope that lose NFL players are expected to reload and still perform at a high level at that position. Are u not expecting big things from the OL despite losing 3 guys to the NFL? It's a bunch of high star guys.

T-Frank is good at what he does but the quick throw thing is mostly a cop-out. The DEs were mostly a wash all day.

Get your stopwatch out and check the times. We had problems with our secondary much more than our edge rush.

I've never heard you say you expect big things. 97.6% of your posting is just downright negative and anti-JF. Did you say a single good thing in the live game thread? Or was it all complaining? It's your thing. You are Crusher with paragraphs. Lol

But I actually enjoy talking to you. I just have to bust ya on Bielema. Cmon. Physical but loses 5 games every year is not what we desire.

I enjoy chatting as well. No doubt, Illinois is not what we desire, of course. They play rugged and emphasize physicality because they lack the overall roster to consistently win. We are vice versa. Our roster is chock full of talent...but I think a case could be made that we don't play physical up front, or at least haven't in big games recently. It's great to emphasize speed and athleticism as a roster build, but u have to win the LOS at times. If we can do that on 3rd downs, especially on both sides of the ball, I think we will turn the corner.

Do you still have freshman Lane as an all B10 safety?
