The Cleveland Guardians...

I think Teddy Roosevelt may have said it best - "I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are the dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every ten are, and I shouldn’t like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth.”

So some generic sounding name was the best they could come up with?? I hope they didn't pay their consulting firm very much for that....

Cleveland Steamers. Imagine the publicity they'd get for that.
Cleveland Streamrollers not avail?

Chosen over?

Cleveland Teaching Assistants
Cleveland Care Providers
Cleveland Fiduciaries

I think they have it wrong.

'Indians' isn't the offensive part of their team name. It's 'Cleveland'

Just change Cleveland to 'Subcontinent' and voila. No more angry folks.

No more woke kids quoting Presidents.

They don't even need new stationary.

Are you Native American?
23andMe canceled me. My family swears that my great great grandmother is from the Delaware tribe. My Mom has artifacts from her that kind of makes it look so. I did the DNA test along with my mother and 0% Indigenous American in my blood. 4% Italian that nobody knew about. Cancelled, so I no longer have a voice in the fight. But on a good note, I now have an urge to wrap a piano wire around the neck of a person in the front seat in a car while I'm in the back.

Tom Hanks started his career in CLE doing shakespear at the Lakewood Ohio Beck Center for the Performing Arts and lived in the city for a short period of time. He has always spoken well of CLE and his time here.

The Guardians are a set of art deco "Guardians of Traffic" carved into the Hope Memorial Bridge. They were carved out, or at least managed, by Harry Hope who is the father of the famous actor and comedian Bob Hope who was born here.

I am not a fan of changing the name. In fact, the franchise signed an agreement with several native American tribes to keep the "Indians" name as long as they got rid of the Indian Chief Wahoo logo two years ago. Regardless, it is the best they could do. Spiders was a consideration but would have had some legal challenges. And "Guardians" is not that much different than "Indians" as the new logo suggests.

So now can they bring back Chief Wahoo?

Maybe make him Traffic Guard Wahoo. Or Night Guard Wahoo?

Okay, I like it a little better now. The sculpture reference is unique to the city and I love when teams do that (as opposed to a generic animal). But, the classic script 'Indians' logo is one of the best ever IMO. It doesn't look as good with 'Guardians' though; I'd go with a whole new logo/scheme to really sell the art deco style sculpture aspect.

I believe someone had previously mentioned the name Guardians is in reference to a number of statutes carved into a bridge structure in Cleveland.

There is a simple solution to all those who are offended by some team names. Eliminate team names altogether. Simply refer to the team's as the Pittsburgh Baseball team, the Philadelphia Hockey Club, the Atlanta Basketball team....etc. etc.

So Guardians are part of the Hope Bridge, named after the Hope family. Bob Hope's original vaudville act was in Blackface, until friends convinced him that he was funnier without it. So now Guardians are equated with racism?
