Conservative estimates range anywhere from $1.876B to $7.562B. I say 'conservative' because it assumes refugees get off public assistance after five years. Biden is asking Congress to appropriate $6.4B. Because Washington notoriously understates costs it's reasonable to assume the top number of $7.562B is close to actual. Also, keep in mind these numbers are in addition to the 50,000 - 100,000 refugees per year and 20,000-50,000 political asylees per year we already accept.
Right now SOS Bliken is meeting with his German counterpart at Ramstein Air Base in order to facilitate how many refugees each country takes, but it looks like we're already committed to 95,000. So far the US has accepted 22,000 and Germany 4,000.
In early August the U.S. State Department expanded eligibility for the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program, opening it to tens of thousands of Afghans who worked for U.S. government contractors, U.S.-based media outlets, and U.S.-based non-governmental organizations.
Until the 1980s most refugee resettlement was done by private charities or NGOs. But under the current model US taxpayers bear the burden and NGOs get paid to assist. Here's a list of entitlement programs for which refugees are eligible.
Federal welfare programs-
The takeaway-
We have a new foreign policy and that is, invade a country only to become invaded. And the longer we are there the more refugees we absorb. We may want to quantify that before fighting the next war. For example, China's population is 1.4B with a sizeable population and ergo, connections already in the US. We can't afford to fight them if we can't afford to feed and clothe them, too. That's assuming we win.
