The new early (12/15) football signing period will tell coaches who is 100% committed.

If a kid is 100% committed to a program, signing at the first possible opportunity won't be an issue. Frankly I'd like to see an August 15th early date. Kids who get hurt their senior year aren't out of a scholarship at the last minute. Programs that are struggling to gain traction won't have bail outs. Shitheads like HardPaw can't pull the rug out from kids who don't "develop" to their liking.

Guys who are "committed" but don't sign early can rightly be viewed with suspicion by their prospective college coaches, with the new early signing period. It will be good all the way around. Kids can make their commitment or coaches can redouble their effort to land an actual commitment.

Is this early signing period a real thing? Not just an idea, but something that will be implemented?

It's not a done deal, it's a long time until the vote in June, the June early-signing date has already been killed, the Pac-12 is on the fence, and the SEC is agin it.

If you think that coaches can't play games with this, think again.

Kids could commit, not sign on the early date and change their mind later.

What happens if you sign 12/15 and head coach leaves at season's/bowls end? SOL for the player I guess.

All the more reason kids should commit to a school, sort of like the kids who choose Notre Dame do. It sure as hell isn't to play for Brian Kelly. Once a kid signs, the coach can't take away the scholarship. Make the damn scholarships good for four years.

Any move to an "early signing period"......

One thing for sure, if it happens - it won't be a good thing for the recruits

which is why it's likely to happen, imho
Agreed

I'll be surprised if we don't see it within the next couple of years

Among coaches, the only folks who may not like it may be the top dogs in the SEC........they may want to make sure they still have the opportunity to make a higher bid on the top recruits in January

If they go to a "summer" signing period, it will make recruiting much more regional (especially if they don't match it with the opportunity to take Official Visits earlier)
I'm not expecting to see a "summer" signing day for a while - but I do think it's coming eventually, probably with a handful of other changes attached

Plan was to allow earlier official visits to accommodate a June signing period. Not entirely clear that it's been abandoned since separate organizations are in control; the NCAA, recruiting calendar/official visiting period and the CCA, NLIs.

Are there any provisions to allow a kid to be released from his commitment due to coaching changes, etc.?

There will never be a "provision" to void a NLI due to a coaching change (OK, "never" is a big word :) - - - - but think about "how one would do that"?, and what a NLI is intended to do, and who the parties are to that "contract" (for lack of a better word), and the situation becomes pretty clear)

Thanks. That answers my question. For their sake, I hope kids and parents appropriately factor coaching stability into their decision if this comes to pass.

I really is a "tough situation" for most recruits (and their families)

The nature of the beast is that for most of these folks their "choice" is centered largely around "football".....otherwise, Yale and Princeton would be littered with 5 start prospects, and would be playing in the "playoffs" :) each year.

As outsiders, we can be critical - and pontificate about "academics" and what not, but when it comes down to it - - - don't all major Universities offer at least the potential for a solid education? Is there any B1G school that doesn't provide the OPPORTUNITY for a solid education?

So....what likely - in their eyes - separates one from another?

And the "football" parameters can change in the blink of an eye - - - - coaching change, a "5 star" kid is recruited at the same position as you, etc etc etc

The "game" is pretty much stacked against the kid - with respect to transfer restrictions and what not.........and the ONLY time the kid is in the driver's seat is during the recruiting process (assuming the kid is coveted enough to draw interest from multiple schools).
Anything that takes away from the kid's flexibility and control is - IMO - not a good change. Yes, it sucks when the program you root for "looses" a kid at the last minute (ala Rivers)......but I'd like to see the kid's have as much freedom as possible.

I don't really have a problem with the 12/15 commitment date. It's after the season and if a recruit is paying attention, they should know which coaches are on hot seats. If a recruit wants to go to a school regardless of who will be coaching, it lets them get a firm commitment that can't be yanked by the next coach. It lets coaches know who is serious about committing to their school and which recruits are using them as a holding place. It also lets recruits know if they have a real committable offer or if they need to look around. I'd be interested in any negative opinions on the december signing period. Maybe I'm missing something.

The summer signing period just seems too early. Too many unknowns at that point.

It'll also tell a recruit how the school views his committment if he doesn't receive a NLI to sign in the early period.
