Sat at a bar here in Corvallis last night when Joey Delgado, OSU’s 49 pounder, sits down next to me. We chatted for about 20 minutes before I realized who he was. Real nice kid. We then talked about the team. Interestingly that he says most all the kids want to hang around Dhesi (Hwt) because he is a winner. They want to be like him. Joey is a kid that I first saw wrestle when he was a RSFR and thought he had a lot of potential. Wondering how a kid like this would have done if he came to PSU. Not that he would even make the starting lineup, but to be with 10+ kids who have similar apparitions as Dhesi.

Learned that Bresser and Calkins will battle it out for 25. The loser goes to 33. Bresser may also take a shirt. Have seen them wrestle against each other twice, splitting. I think Calkins wins the spot. OSU has a solid team but not sure they beat ASU this year.

Also got the chance to chat briefly with Dhesi who came in a bit later with several of the team and their parents. A gentle giant.

Palmers done?

When I was living in WA, by sheer coincidence I found that I had moved to the best HS wrestling area in the state. It's the area just East of Tacoma. Palmer is from there and so were some other Beaver wrestlers -Mangrum and Meeks and I don't remember who else. Also from the same area were Jake Swartz who was at BSU, Drew Templeman at Wyoming and Ares Carpio who was at ASU. There were also a lot of older guys like Jake's dad who competed in the veteran's division and were pretty dominant. Living there was a great experience and the people were solid and down to earth.

Attended the Oregon State wrestle offs last night. Not that anyone following PSU cares but here are my thoughts on the Other OSU
125 - Bresser and Calkins did not wrestle, but sparred. There may be bad blood between the 2, which showed last year at the wrestle offs when there were extra curricular stuff. But I think Bresser will shirt. Calkins is very good and probably top 10.
133 - Palmer wrestled up at 41 against last year starter, Hathaway, and won 5-3 but was definitely better than the score. FR Davan Turner did wrestle the 133 match and looked real good but will probably RS.
141 - Hathaway will stay at 41.
149 - Delgado won 13 - 3 but looked vary sluggish, probably due to wrestling an out manned teammate who wrestled up.
157 - Rodrigues won a first period 18-1 TF. Looked really good but probably not great competition.
165 - A hole
174 - Bigger hole. But on a side note, going into SV2, the bottom guy wasn’t getting out. And with one second left, the ref called stall on the top guy, his 2nd and tied the match. The top guy did eventually win in SV3.
184 - Griego looked very solid with a 1st period fall.
197 - Crawford won with a 1st period med FF, really manhandling the other kid.
Hwt - Dhesi did not wrestle and I don’t think he was even at the match. He would have destroyed the 2 backups.

Last year I predicted top ten for OSU. Was way off. This year, they may be correctly rated at 16. They have some guys that will score points, Calkins/Bresser, Palmer, Crawford and certainly Dhesi. And some decent guys, Hathaway, Delgado, Rodrigues, and Griego who might be qualifiers. I think Calkins and Crawford will surprise.

Would be interesting if some of these guys, like Delgado (at 41) and Crawford had been able to wrestle in the room at PSU. Could see much higher finishes.

I care.

The update is welcome, at least to me. They are coming east this season and I might try to catch them at Rutgers, so it's good to get some more information. Btw, the scuttling of Oregon's program still hurts.

Good to start learning about the program now. Gotta think Wittlake will get at least 1 "home match" in Corvallis during his PSU career.
There were some rumblings in the crowd over Wittlake. I think they (some of the fans) understand why Wittlake will be a Lion. Was gonna wear some PSU stuff but it was their night. The Beavers are my 2nd favorite team.

Who doesn't love Beavers;)

The older guys who post on this forum will remember that back in our time, the Beavs were a force to be reckoned with. They produced NCAA champions on a regular basis. Guys like Jess Lewis, Roger Weigle and Greg Strobel were all products of the Beaver program. The last big star from there who I can remember is Les Gutches, and that was back in the 90's.

They are still a decent program, but I don't think you can compare their current program to the one that I remember when I was in college. I've seen a lot of back and forth arguments between WA guys as to whether or not Zalesky is doing a good job. The guys who support him argue that OSU has been the best team in the Pac 12 for the last 5 years, while the detractors point out that a lot of good talent that was picked up by the program failed to really develop in college. It's going to be interesting to see how they fare against Zeke's ASU program as they continue to bring in good recruits.

BTW, if you don't like how Oregon treated their wrestling program, then don't root for the Oregon in football because that's the real reason. Oregon dropped wrestling and several other sports with the intention of focusing on football and winning a national championship. They did make a good run at it for a few years, but there were a lot of students who ended up SOL as a result. You'll find that a lot of wrestling fans in the NW share my sentiments.

Haven't been back east to a match in many years but was surprised to see little to no effort by the coaches to coach which I would think would be an ideal environment to work with these kids. I especially kept an eye on Taylor Meeks who is an assistant coach, who by the way looks so much healthier after sucking down to 184 two years ago, but he just sat there and little interaction with the team afterwards.
Thought the fan support was good, but I think this program is going the way of their football program.

...... word on HR is Top 5 HWT Dhesi is out for they year with an ACL.

That's ashame if true.

Talked to Dhesi briefly about 10 days ago, so must have happened right before the wrestle offs. Thought it was strange he wasn't there.

IIRC he already missed one year for injury, so he might be a good 6th year candidate ... which would give him a crack at the title after Snyder graduates.

This is not true. It was not about football. It was about competing with Oregon State in baseball as they won the 2006 and 2007 college world series. They had to drop men's sports to add baseball. Phil Knight wanted this to happen. He felt there was more money in baseball then wrestling. That is why you should not support Nike if you are a wrestling fan.

This is exactly what I have heard. ISU dropped baseball because of Title IX. Baseball and wrestling have been pitted against each other for some odd reason, and I think every college should have both. Title IX stinks imo, and I really appreciate women's sports. Too often equality just ends up resulting in less for everyone.
