"The 'pros' are telling me I'm a 1st rounder!" So does this player retire with 3/4 games left?

In contrast, they just interviewed Dabo after Clemson beat Iowa St in the Cheezit bowl. They asked why he didn’t have any opt outs by players. He said because they view Clemson as bigger than any coach or individual in their approach.

Maybe no high draft picks?

Maybe the team means a little more to them. They haven’t gone to the portal for players (at least prior to this year).

Hearing what Dabo say regarding his players not opting out makes me think about the discussion the other day. What types of players is this coaching staff recruiting? Me or We types of players. So what other players has Jimmy advised to opt out to create an excuse for getting dismantled in the upcoming bowl game? We got problems. What would Joe say????

Is this where this is going?
Not a silly question. When are they going to start bailing out of pee-wee games or freshman year of high school? This is already happening in HS baseball.

If you hit certain measurables you're risking bazillions of dollars by stepping on the field... Until you have to step onto the field. Then you already have your money. Nice how that works.

God your such a douche.

Why wait until the bowl game. Players should opt out after 2 losses or the annual loss to OSU. After that, the remaining games are all exhibition anyway. No chance to win the division/ conference. No chance to go to the playoffs.

I wish the NFL would drop the 3 years out of HS requirement. Or a minor league gets started and sticks.

They're done in high school pretty soon. Some places it's probably already a thing.

Pitching in HS baseball is all about scouts at travel games and showcases. High schools are nuts for even having baseball teams.

Or I'll tell you what, get your best catcher, shortstop, and CF and teach them to throw it over because the stud pitcher you think you have isn't playing past sophomore year.

Why wouldn't I expect the same in football? You would think a 15 or 16 year old kid was never going to pitch again if he had to go two days out of five. If you were a kid like Clowney years back coming out of HS right now, why would you even bother going to college? I know why pitchers want to go to college free or half-free....because they have one shot to get there and many ways to go no further. Why on earth would I pitch for my bullshit high school baseball team after maybe freshman year. To hang a banner on the outfield fence after I'm gone?

LOL, look at the number of players who have transferred out of Clemson in the past 2 years. He tried to make a policy about taking any players from the portal, which sounds like a noble cause, until all his backup QBs and RBs took to the portal. Bet he changes his mind, or his team approach will never sniff the playoffs again.

FYI, Narduzzi also said this about the portal when it first started. Players in there "quit on their team." Then he had a bunch of players enter it, and guess what, he's taking them as well.

Exactly. I wish guys like Micah well, but he was not, nor will ever be a Lion great. He walked away from his responsibilities after one full season to SIT ON HIS ASS. There seems to be a lot of 'I' s on the Penn State t-e-a-m.
That said, I give a big shout-out to everyone who is playing in the Outback Bowl and good luck to those sitting it out.

Narduzzi has built his teams utilizing the portal. He uses it to fill all the holes his recruiting has left. Just his offseason, he has brought in his projected starting QB from USC. It's sort of become an alternative to recruiting high school kids.

Is this where this is going?
Of course that's where this is going. Why is anyone surprised by this?

I'm also surprised that none of the Clemson players sat out. Not because I think there are issues at Penn State, but because maybe those kids at Clemson aren't getting good advice.

I understand that. His recruiting is bad and the portal is a godsend for someone like him. In the past, those holes would not be filled. He also benefits from guys sticking around for 5 years (and now 6) since many do not have options.
I guarantee you Dabo will be taking players from the portal, starting this year. Taking a moral stand on this is wonderful, but if you don't win you will be taking that moral stand elsewhere.

Wow guess you had the terrible High School baseball experience. I must be doing something right then because all my players I coach play All 4 years for me including an All-Star closer in the major leagues who never played travel baseball but yet still got drafted. Matter of fact most of the kids and I have that have been drafted or played scholarship baseball say that they enjoyed High School season much more than when they traveled. And all my pitchers say that those elite summer coaches tried to ruin their arms

Sat on his ass? Hardly.

Plus, I don’t believe you when you say you wish him well.

Mary:

Micah played two seasons at Penn State. He began preparing for the NFL after the BIG TEN CANCELLED the season. When the Big Ten later reversed course and approved a partial season, he thought about playing but chose not to do so as did several other Big Ten players who were put in the same situation as him because of the Big Ten cancelling the season. He also wasn't SITTING ON HIS ASS as you claim, but rather was working out with Lavar Arrington preparing for the NFL draft. Micah is always promoting Penn State and, in fact, was in no small measure responsible for the offensive lineman from Harrisburg who quit football earlier this year but changed his mind and has now resumed playing football after talking with Micah.

Everything he did was his right to do. One of my rights is not liking it. As I said, I wish him well, but in my mind, he is many steps below Franco Harris, Jack Ham, Sequon Barkley and other Lions in the great category. Too much "I" in his team..
PS I should have said started, not played.

Oh they were on the team all four years, but to them the travel and showcase stuff came first. I'm mainly talking about pitchers. We had kids who didn't want to go on their turn for the HS team because some camp or showcase was coming up. I always wondered how college coaches felt about kids who stiffed their HS teams but I guess nobody cares if you are hitting whatever metrics they're looking for. Maybe if you are a big 5 or 6A school you can ride that stuff out but not in the lower classes. But everything changes I guess. Old man yells at cloud.

So you basically are disowning him. Shame on you.

Good chance Clemson doesn't have anyone go in the first two rounds based on some mocks I've seen.

Bowls are just a different animal than regular season games for teams that are eliminated from the playoff hunt. Most guys sitting out are in programs that realistically had no chance of making the playoff from the first game of the season. Random example but I know Houston had a CB opt out of their bowl game to get ready for the draft. You can't tell me he went into the season realistically thinking they were playoff bound.

Just my opinion but I think timing as much as " the game not counting" plays into the decision. Guys are sitting around for over a month, they're young, impatient, have a bunch of money waiting for them on the other side and they can get a head start on that vs sitting around in state college or wherever. It won't happen but if you moved all the bowls to the week after the season and I bet opt outs decrease by quite a bit just because kids aren't sitting around thinking about it for over a month after the semester has ended.

I think that we are having difficulty accepting that the portal and opting out have changed the game on a college level - maybe permanently. The risk of losing big money is more important than team and your fellow players. And I understand that and have difficulty condemning it, as this is the way our society is programming them, including the coaches who leave before a bowl game - they are setting a model. The likes of Joe Paterno and maybe Saban are gone or at the end of their tenure. Remember when JoePa was offered partial ownership in the Boston Patriots and the head coaching position - millions of dollar was passed up. He turned it down and then turned down Miami in 1987(?). Different breed, different times. Ultimately, I do not believe college football will survive with the Portal as it is right now. I recall John Urschel. He stayed with the team, played bowl games, had a few injuries - yet went on to a pro career until he felt he had to quit in order to keep his brain free from concussions, as he needed his mental ability to finish his Ph.D. in mathematics at M.I.T. no less!! He gave up big bucks to pursue his love of mathematics. Bravo John! In my ancient mind, I believe that if you come to PSU for your education and to play football, you should fulfill that commitment whether it is a 1-10 season or a potential championship season. I don't hear too many players for Army or Navy going into the portal or opting out. Even Staubach fulfilled his commitment to the Navy before going pro.

I call bullshit on you’re comment. Big10 canceled the season. Then at the last second, late September or October, decided to play conference only games. By that time Micah had already signed or taken agent money and was no longer eligible. He tried to come back but PSU and NCAA would allow it. Get your facts straight before knocking some kid over something you no nothing about.

I don't get what the big deal is. Most of us would make the same decision if we were sure to make millions, but there was a chance we play a meaningless game and get our knee shredded.

And if you bump the 70s, 80s, and 90s to now- I'm sure some of those all time greats everyone loves would have done the same thing. It's a different beast.

My greatest mentor went to the U of Tennessee for a year as a programmer in 1977. After his freshmen year, went back to LA where he took an assignment to program devices made from a company that decided to withdraw from the US market even though they had a fairly sizable market. He became an expert, overnight, and was in high demand. By the end of the summer, he had "hired" three friends to help him. They weren't actually employees that is why I put them in parentheses. When it came time to go back to college, one company offered to triple his income to finish the job. He decided to take a year off to make that money. In that year, he legally became a company and hired five more people. By the time he would have graduated college, he has 24 employees and his company was worth close to $10m and was split by the original four people. One employee came to him and said that they could duplicate the functionality with networked PCs so that these companies were dependent on devices that were no longer supported. The other three owners didn't want to do that feeling it would cannibalize their revenue. So he got some investors to guy out the other three. He owned 51% while three others owned 29%, 10% and 10%. He ended up selling that company in 2001 for $100m. he has since gone on to start and sell two other companies. He is now a venture capitalist and sits on the boards of five companies.

The point? You go to college to learn how to make money and sustain your life and family. When college is no longer the conduit to that goal, it is time to leave.

My friend, BTW, went back to college at age 50 and earned a bachelor's degree in theology.

I really dislike what college football has become but that is selfish on my part. I like it for the kids. I can't imagine being poor and playing in front of thousands of millionaires, putting my health at risk, and not getting a piece of the hundreds of millions of dollars being earned on college football. I get that a lot of that goes to, basically, charity to fund other kid's sports 'ships, but isn't charity voluntary? (unless you work for a company invested in the United Way)?

What is so hard to understand that college football is an interview for the highest paying job in the world. Economics made it this way. Once you secure the job you wait around until your first day on the job. Fans acting self righteous is one of the more comedic things I've ever seen. People making fools of themselves complaining about players opting out of a bowl game that means literally nothing between teams with 5 losses each.
The reality is that its better for the program to use these games as developmental/springboards to the next season and people are to wrapped up in their own biases to even understand this. If you don't win your conference championship and are not making the playoff, it's time to start building for the future, maybe it's not that way at Toledo but at a place like Penn State, winning matters.
Like a noon new years day game between a couple of teams that barely had records good enough to get to a bowl is some sort of showcase game or something. Seriously high comedy.
Is Jahan Dotson quitting on his team? Hahahaha, you fools. He's given more to the Penn State football program than all of you on this board combined. He wants to ensure his financial future for LIFE. Taking a game off does that and guess what, it isn't a big deal. Some other scholarship football player like Jahan was 3 years ago will now get his opportunity to shine.
People complaining about Micah Parson, hahahhaahahaha, he's only the best defensive football player on the planet. People saying he only played a year, meanwhile he is the only player in the history of a place called linebacker U to have have led the team in tackles as a true freshman without starting a game. OMG, how pathetic can you be?

I know a lot of people rip on Dabo and Clemson, but there is much to like about that program. I mean, how many people are tired of seeing running backs and receivers refereeing, signaling first down after every play. Hamming it up after each play, even if their losing by 4 td's???? I do miss the classy attitude of acting like "you've been there before!" I don't think we'll ever see those days again.....and yes, I'm one of those old guys.

Simple rule of physics-for every action there is a reaction! For years, athletes have been getting screwed over by the powers that be in their respective sports. NFL contracts are a joke. If players underestimate a fart and crapped their pants, they were in danger of being cut! Unscrupulous agents have a special place in hell for the ways they took advantage of their clients and possibly colluded with the owners. Here’s a wake up call for all you “fans” who cry about loyalty and pine for the “good old days “, it’s always been about the money. And, guess what else, if any of us were in the positions these young men were in, trust me-we would be doing the same thing-taking the money and running as fast as our fat asses could take us!
Unless you’re willing to subsidize them under some NIL umbrella, then spare us your BS hypocrisy unless you’re able to become the next Czar of sports! That’s today’s rant- please return to your regular programming!!

well, lets see.

Girls? Good luck if you don't have the buck.

Power? Kinda goes with bucks..chicken and egg.

Health? OK, but healthcare is certainly better for those who can afford the best drs. and care
