The Revenant

Just go see it. Outstanding!

Can't wait to see this. Probably gets Leo his Oscar this year (unless something crazy happens). He's long overdue and it's a pretty weak category this year IMO.

Haven't see the Revenant yet but Will Smith was outstanding in Concussion. So he will have some competition for the Oscar

The Revenant is as close to experiencing the western frontier in the 1820s as you are going to get. Nothing - at least to my knowledge - is askew historically. I think the character Hugh Glass gets back on his feet a little quicker than most would after being mauled (twice) by a huge grizzly, but that was the only "Hollywood" I took from the film. I'm not easy to please when it comes to historically based films, but I was super impressed. The movie's cadence bogs down a bit at times but the opening is gripping in the same way as "Saving Private Ryan." I will see it on the big screen again and it will become part of my DVD collection. As I said, just go see it.

Did it at all remind you of the time you were dropped off in Alaska for a week?

I'm very skeptical when they mix any kind of "true story" into a movie. I think a movie is an inherently bad medium for conveying truth. Viewers emotions are too easily manipulated and as a result the filmmakers don't have any incentive to stick to truth if they can come up with an alternative that is more emotionally compelling, which the usually can.

I just looked up The Reverent on Wiki and it says the movie is based on a fictional retelling of actual events. I wouldn't trust a movie to convey truth even if it was based on a non-fictional retelling. That's not to say movies are bad in general but just that they should be for entertainment rather than education.
