The story of the Beatles "Hey Jude"

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with their work post 1965.

The group is probably guilty of that in the early years, early 60's. Even then, while the music was pop bubble-gum, the technology behind it was ground breaking (not to mention the marketing and media manipulation). Rubber Soul is considered to be one of the most ground breaking albums ever released. Songs like "In My Life", "Norwegian Wood", Michelle and Nowhere Man are timeless. If you understand the background that went into their art (especially compared to what was going on at the time) you'd be amazed.

By the time you get into Sgt. Pepper, White Album, Yellow Submarine, Abby Road and Let it Be they were a full on pop/political juggernaut like we've never seen. They were fantastic writers, performers, artists, arrangers, editors, directors and producers for performances that spanned pop, classical, jazz, blues, ballads...they did it all. Nobody compares.

There's a post on another thread today where a very skilled guitar man is playing a medley of Beatles' songs from 50 years ago in front of an audience in China, and the audience knows every song and breaks into loud applause at the recognition of the next tune in the Beatles catalog as soon as it is begun. They must have fell for it big time.

This only proves how idiotic the chinese can be. On the other hand it also proves brainwashing works.

Retraction: it wasn't Joey it was Johnny Ramone that threw the pebbles and they landed. When you look at the Shea footage, Brain Epstein is freaking out looking up at the stands because it was raining pebbles.

What is truly amazing is the staying power of the Beatles. They arrived in the U.S. in 1964 and broke up in 1969/70. That's a relatively short period of time. Yet 45 years after their breakup they're still popular and still selling records. As I walk around campus it's not unusual to see kids wearing Beatles t-shirts or to hear their music playing. I can't imagine any artist today that will have that kind of staying power. It's really astounding when you think about it.

Have you ever heard of Elvis Presley?

Frank Sinatra?

Patsy Cline

Hank Williams

And of course ( it kills me to say it ) Michael Jackson?

They will all be Gods in the Was Museum long after you are dead.

Preference for music is a personal choice but there is little doubt that the Beatles were the best band ever in the minds of most people. Look at ratings by Billboard, Rolling Stone, etc.

"The band that is recognized as having sold the most albums of all time is The Beatles. The total number of certifiable sales of their albums is an amazing 246.1 million. Some publications have suggested that The Beatles have sold up to 1 billion copies of their albums worldwide. Album sales are difficult to verify due to the change in systems over the years."

The Beatles have won 7 Grammy Awards and 15 Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. The Beatles had 6 Diamond, 24 Multi-Platinum, 39 Platinum and 45 Gold Albums in the United States.

This is a lie and a crock, Elvis Presley sold more records then the next 10 on the list combined !!

Elvis's record / recording sales are in the 10's of billions. No one is even in the same universe.

Some things never get old, like the Beatles still suck.

Think of all the great music that went away because the Beatles just sucked the life out of the radio.

Never did like them. This new ignore feature is great. Don't see those blocked even if someone responds to the wastes.

Wrong. Beatles are first and Elvis is second. MJ is third and Madonna is fourth.

According to the RIAA (Recording Association of America), The Beatles are No. 1 with 178 certified units sold; followed by Garth Brooks @ (136 million), Elvis @ (135.5 million), Zep @ (111.5 million) et al. Not that sheer numbers imply quality, the point being a little research goes a long way. And speaking of The Ramones - I presume your familiar with they story how the band came to be known as such, and the irony of it all....if I felt you were capable of understand such irony.

So, I am going to hazard a guess that you and Ralpie don't care for The Beatles. I know I am going out on a limb here, but I will say it anyway - call it a hunch.

Beatles are great, but Jude is worst song ever.
Not as bad as Ebony and Ivory, but bad.

Someone liked it! Wikipedia:

"Hey Jude" was released in August 1968 as the first single from the Beatles' record label Apple Records. More than seven minutes in length, it was at the time the longest single ever to top the British charts.[1] It also spent nine weeks at number one in the United States, the longest for any Beatles single. "Hey Jude" tied the "all-time" record, at the time, for the longest run at the top of the US charts. The single has sold approximately eight million copies and is frequently included on professional critics' lists of the greatest songs of all time. In 2013, Billboard named it the 10th biggest song of all time

BTW, Ebony and Ivory wasn't a Beatles song...that was PM.

Back to Jude. It was one of the first songs to deal with kids of divorce (although Julian didn't know it was written about him until 20 years later). And, its a great message on how to "take a bad song, and make it better." It was 7 minutes in length, has great progression, and features a 40 piece orchestra (which was rare and was somewhat pioneered by the Beatles, meaning using an orchestra in a pop/rock song).

Oh yeah, Ramone was a made up name by Paul. So what?

Your numbers on sales are wrong. When you take into account singles and the sales of 45's then Evlis is a billion light year's past everyone else.

Albums ( a 1960's crock invention of worthlessness and bloated egos splash like wasted fat between the groves ) sucked compared to a 45.

One great 45 in mono blows away any idiot Beatles' record. Rock and Roll and the 45 is where it's at.

20 year's later Punk Rock happen for this very reason.

Ooh Coo Coo Cho my ass...

"The things that we sang about were dealing with ourselves, our own frustrations and things that we found amusing and things dealing with TV or radio or life," Joey Ramone told Amazon.com in an interview....He added: "I remember being turned on to the Beach Boys, hearing Surfin' USA, I guess, in 1960. But the Beatles really did it to me."

Oops.........

As far as your Elvis numbers...without citations, they are as laughable as your music critiques.......Mr. "Christgau"

Joey, love the guy, but he was out of it most of the time. The guy couldn't even turn on a light switch. Johnny was god's gift to baby sitting when it came to the Ramones.

As for the numbers, go the the elvis.com web site and weep. Elvis' sales numbers are unchartable. Like a ton of Wilt Chamberlains records. Some things defie measurement like light or a black hole or imagination.

Who propelled the Beatles? Gorked out women on drugs, and burnout guys from the same.

To use your words - so what? While Dee Dee was the most prodigious, the band acknowledged sharing song writing responsibilities and the songs are credited as such. So to sum: the band you prescribe to love, was heavily influenced by a band you love to hate. (irony - a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result).

Elvis.com? Nope, not a fan site, or site specific to a band or performer. These numbers can, and are, often inflated. Numbers from an accredited source (i.e. Billboard, RIAA, ASCAP, etc.) that presents said information in a non-biased and/or impartial way.

What's interesting is that both of these posters (assuming they are not one and the same), spend an inordinate amount of time arguing about a musical group they profess to hate.

Agreed - if you're going to say something sucks, than make a coherent and intelligent case why it sucks (for which we still wait, now and likely forever).

That being said, the point of the OP was to share with those who liked the Beatles - not for those who don't.

damn, Obli, that is old news. Was it something that you just stumbled upon, or are you just sharing the story?

Hey Tom....as a guy in tech....this is an interesting learning experience. Just think, if you were born when Hey Jude was recorded, you'd be 47 years old. Interesting that lots of people don't know
