They definitely didn’t like that beat down, and the league absolutely didn’t want Penn State supplanting the “Big Two” so quickly. —Explains why the Midwest writers and coaches tossed Penn State under the bus with the year end polls. If Penn State were able to recruit with a National Championship right out of the gate, the “Big Two” would have been immediately subjugated . ——Passive aggressive , administrative beat down of the “New Guy”.

Oh boy, did that piss them off. When we joined this bogus B2G conference all the talk was Penn State was going to learn what real football is about. That the weekly pounding of the big boys would show them interlopers from back east. It would take five years or more for them to adapt.
Then, in just the second year, we not only win the conference but steam roll right through everyone. Really made them look bad. And they have hated us ever since.

It was one of those "you're never as good as you think when you win" kind of games.
Would have been a very competitive game but Ohio State lost Eddie George in the 1st quarter (on a hard tackle by Willie Smith) and the only backup was a true freshman who didn't know the Ohio State offense. Without a running game Ohio State couldn't really run its offense.
I've always thought if George was playing, Ohio State would have been able to sustain drives and been able to overpower that undersized (but quick) PSU defense. I'd still bet on PSU to win because of the incredible talent they had, but if you look at the Ohio State roster, they had future NFL players all over the field as well.
George playing would not have made this a competitive game. maybe a little closer but we were by far a better team that year then OSU. We could have scored 100
Yeah, George wouldn't save OSU or do much to keep the game closer. What kept the game as close as it was was Paterno's generosity. Penn State literally could have score 80 or 90 points but had the backups in early in the third.
Penn State was beating USC 35-0 at the half in 94 and we could have scored 70 in that game but the starters basically didn't play in the second half.
Carter would have 2500 plus yards that year but he didn't play in the second half of a lot of games. That offense was the total package the likes of which has never been seen.
Unfortunately that generosity arguably cost us the title that year.

CFB was screwed up back then (and still is)
in those days the nc was like a boxing title that got decided by split decision after the top two contenders beat up also-rans in two separate fights, but never faced each other
