Another reason why we need to re-emphasize history in these days of STEM
Our president at the time, Kennedy led and laid down the challenge.... because we were getting beat in scientific firsts by a communist foe who had bigger missiles because they projected ten years earlier that a nuclear warhead package would weigh about 6,000lbs... we knew it would be about a 2,000lb payload and our Redstones and Jupiter missles were engineered accordingly
We accepted the challenge and supported it as a nation... American public (and Congress) weren’t really sure about it even after JFK’s proclamation... just like every other president since then blowing smoke about returning to the moon or going to Mars, there was a strong chance this “challenge” would fizzle due to other distractions (Viet-Nam, civil unrest, $$$/politics... then JFK was dead and suddenly it became a mission-from-God... just prior to his death - in light of funding fears - and equipment failures/setbacks, JFK proposed to the UN a joint moon mission with the Soviets... Krushchev rejected it as it was in CCCPs best interest to leave their capabilities ( lack thereof) a secret... JFK’s assassination suddenly made the moonshot a way to salute the fallen President’s vision...
NASA created the mission, the sense of urgency, and the removal of fear of failure... NASA did not remove the fear of failure... Apollo equipment was a tremendous leap from Gemini and was incredibly risky... look no further than the Apollo1 pad-fire... subsequent test-missions were rushed ahead as intelligence showed that the Russians had a giant booster on the launch pad at Baikoniur... fear of what the Soviets had in mind created the sense if urgency, as Apollo8 was never intended to be a lunar mission until six months prior to launch... we got lucky in a big way
The challenge was met and for the first time in the history of mankind, the world was united, albeit briefly... tell that to our guys in Vietnam, protesters, and Soviets
If you offered up the costs in today's dollars and declared that it could unite the world, would you do i it? Wax poetic about it all you want - It was never done to “unite the world”... it was cold-war response to thwart potential spheres of influence worldwide from a nuclear foe
