“Donald goes out of his way to treat him like garbage,” longtime Trump advisor Roger Stone said on Friday.
For context: Trump is a capable man, as are the men and women around him. We should know that. He won a presidential election. Whether you believe he did that by selling snake oil or a renewed American Dream, either is impressive. His ability to connect so directly with half of the country (seemingly out of ****ing nowhere) will be studied in political science classes long past when we all die.
I would argue that he has no bigger strength than his ability to discredit another cause/purpose/argument. I would also argue that this strength falls into the hands of another of his biggest strengths: the ability to distract. Which brings me back to the above quote. Why would a past and present Trump advisor/counsel (who it is reasonable to assume is currently speaking regularly with Trump) say this? To the loathed NYT nonetheless.
Whether any of what Stone said is true, he planted a reason for Cohen to release information on him and/or switch sides. And, even though the source is Trump's advisor, the fact that its being reported under the NYT masthead will carry much more water with his supporters in regards to the generalized left'ist agenda. And, most importantly, it discredits pretty much any move Cohen now makes. Albeit thinly-veiled, it's a clever move.
