This year's team ... does it have a focus?

I understand the wrestlers dreams of representing the USA in the Olympics, but what other collegiate sport allows the athletes to participate in non NCAA games/matches during their regular season? If football was an Olympic sport, could you imaging PSU, tOSU, Alabama, LSU, or any other team allowing their star players to play in a all-star game in the middle of the NCAA season? What if half of Dukes basketball team skipped the UNC game for a team USA qualifying game? What if several of their star players became injured? I get it that our wrestlers want to wear the red, white, and blue, but how many college kids have a realistic chance of making our Olympic team? A very select few. There is a huge difference in skill and strength at the senior freestyle level. Look how someone as skilled and talented as DT struggled his first couple of post-NCAA seasons. I am not a fan of our young men trying to both earn an Olympic spot and compete for their NCAA team concurrently. I am also not a fan of Olympic red shirting. When our coaches recruit, they recruit for the teams needs for a year or two or three down the road. A wrestler deciding to take an ORS can greatly affect our coaches recruiting strategy. God, I hate Olympic years! End of rant...your thoughts?
If you tell a recruit-- forget about you life long dream of being in the Olympics---your telling them to go elsewhere to wrestle.

Berge concussion seems more serious and may need to rest until next year, and going with as of jan. 12 the 197 lb who has looked the best . Now I don't know if Lee can make the cut ,but he is the best pedigree option.

The coaches should put the full court press on the entire team to dump their girlfriends and switch to the easiest major offered by the World Campus.

I hear what you’re saying. You have your opinion, I have mine and we all know the saying about opinions. I’m a fan of NCAA wrestling, not so much for freestyle. I do understand that the kids have aspirations of representing the USA in the Olympics, but I simply don’t like how it can adversely affect the team dynamic. I think most if not all wrestlers who come to PSU is because they want to be on a NCAA Championship contending team. Yes, for some the RTC is also a big factor. Unfortunately, injures such as we suffered could very well jeopardize those kids dreams. I don’t know the answers. It is what it is, but I don’t like it.

No shak because of one match where he didn’t dominate, but found a way to win? Dude has been a grinder for our team for years. I’d like to give him every chance to succeed in his final year.

This is a public forum for discussions related to wrestling. I see no harm in a poster bringing up a topic he/she would like to discus. People should not be afraid to post what is on their minds due to the backlash that may ensue. If all in the room are thinking alike, then......... It is a little odd that the OP has not chimed in since the 1st post.

Concussion protocol (NCAA Rule) has changed dramatically over the years. Every student-athlete has a baseline evaluation done, and the testing done after a possible concussion, followed by treatment if there is a concussion, is intended to prevent even the slightest permanent injury to the brain. It should not be the norm in any sport, bringing an 18-22 year-old back to competition before they are cleared to do so, as the rules are the same for all.

Correct. It is important to understand that there are different levels of severity of concussions. Brady took a nasty blow, and, quite honestly, if someone told me he’s experiencing things like Sidney Crosby did a few years ago, I would not be surprised. I’d hope to see him ramp up for the postseason in February, but his health is paramount.

Yeah. That’s a seriously quick hook for a guy who has already AA’d at the weight and is coming off a major injury. Patience!

IS THERE A MARRIAGE PROBLEM AT PSU or ARE NOT ENOUGH OF THE OTHER GUYS GETTING MARRIED?!? Seems like all the olympic hopefuls are 'boo'd up.'

Maybe there's a girl feeding Cenzo too much or there's not a girl being passive aggressive each time he walks towards the kitchen?

Based on like the 4 instagrams I've seen of Nick Lee, he's married to the game and Seth Nevills so he can be trusted. For now.

Well guys are going to have wrestle some before March, cenzo and bergy are going to have to get into some sort of groove and shack is going to have to get that cradle matic working again. And it would be nice to see ALL our starters wrestle in a dual.

I hear you, but regular season duals are essentially meaningless. The goal, and it's the ONLY goal, is to try and get all our guys as healthy as possible and wrestling their best at NCAAs. Duals are only important in their role in supporting this goal.

FWIW, I don't believe Cael would tolerate the team losing focus; it's just not in his DNA. The team has been brutally hit by injuries. I don't think we'll see Berge again this year, we lost Conel and most importantly Cassar. Shak has just returned from injuries. So I give the coaches great credit for doing as much as possible to keep the team as positive as possible. Hall has definitely stepped up as the team leader and I'm glad to see it.
If it was possible to have a re-do, I'd have sent the team (all those who were available) to the Scuffle. At a minimum it would have provided more clarity to who should start at 125 and 149. The only tournament where we had most of the 125 wrestlers was the Black Knights Tournament and Teske had the best PSU performance (3rd). A repeat at the Scuffle may have prevented his portal decision. Verk and Gardner are very close and the Scuffle tournament could have provided more clarity (Verk did beat Gardner at the Black Knights Tournament 3-2 - again, very close).
We've gone from a consensus pre-season lineup of Teske, RBY, Lee, Verk, Berge, Joseph, Hall, Rasheed, Conel, Cassar, to Meredith, RBY, Lee, Verk, Pipher, Joseph, Hall, Brooks, Rasheed, S. Nevills. That is a lot of change. Don't think today we'll bring home the gold in March, but I'm confident the team has not lost focus and is doing a damn good job of handling the challenges.

Please define "team dynamic."

Because I've seen zero evidence of any impact to team chemistry. This team appears completely united -- just like the PSU teams that were not in Olympic years.

And the injuries suffered at freestyle events just as easily could've happened in folk matches or in practice. Except in cases of deliberate attempts to injure (cough cough Campolattano vs. McIntosh), they're random.

Also, "most who come to PSU want to be on a NCAA Championship contending team" is a false choice. Mark Hall wanted both. If Cael had said no, Hall would've gone to Ohio State, where Tan Tom had already said yes to Snyder. We would have lost in 2018, and would not be contenders this year. And Hall is hardly alone. All of our AAs and finalist contenders want both.

Facts and logic screw with desired opinions. Stop doing that.

Just a question. Why not Gardner at 57

There is no loss of focus. Never will be with this program as long as Cael is running it. But, it’s been a weird year with no big tournament like the SS and trying to accommodate guys who are trying to qualify for the Olympics.

He said we would see a lot of guys and we have.

After 6 duals, they have used 19 wrestlers which ties for the most in the CS era. In 10-11 he used 19 guys in 19 duals! He is down 40% of his preseason starting lineup. Plenty of time to tighten things up but this has been the most adversity CS has faced in his 11 years at PSU.

And they will still finish #1 or #2 in the country which speaks volumes for the level at which this program operates.
