Thomas Haines...

Not surprised that he is leaving OSU. Surprised that he chose LH over Lehigh, Pitt, Edinboro. Wonder if Cael had the premonition on Mr. Haines when offering Nevilles over him. Any indication that he reached out to PSU for HWT, we seem to be in a pinch at this weight class.

I feel bad for the guy. His verbal didn't work out with PSU and now he's leaving tOSU. Lock Haven does seem like an odd choice but hopefully things work out for him there.

When Haines reopened his recruitment a couple years ago, the schools he considered were the same schools he considered pre-verbal: OSU, Maryland, and Cornell. Lock Haven made a late push for him and made a good impression.

It sounds like he went to a place he already knew and liked. If he didn't want to be bothered with the recruitment process for a 3rd time and just called Scott Moore, who could blame him? (Not saying this is what happened, but it does make sense and wouldn't be the first time an athlete did this.)

Spencer Myers is on staff at Lock Haven, so he has a great workout partner there.

As far as the other schools go, now you start getting into rosters and scholarship allocations, and remember LHU is in-state and cheap before scholarship. Maryland has Peck at HWT -- Haines is much better, but do they have any money? They're out of state, he'd lose a year for B10 transfer rules, and I'm not sure he'd have good workout partners. Koll likes Sweany.

I don't know his relationship (if any) with the other schools ... Lehigh has 2 heavies + Wood coming in next year. He would be great for Pitt but they make no sense for him except a starting spot. He'd be an upgrade for Edinboro, but would Flynn really cast aside RS FR Miller?

This move makes a ton of sense for Haines. Best of luck to him (except of course against us).

Watched Haines against Black from Illinois a couple of weeks ago. He looked pretty damn good! I'm guessing him and Tavanello were *very* close in the room. I can't blame him for transferring, he could AA at some point IMHO.

...when?...

...eligibility?...
That's the $1M question. If he can go now, he likely qualifies for nationals with a decent shot at the podium. He might pose some problems for Iowa and Okie State. Things could get interesting.

I think you're too optimistic here. Lost to Newton Smerchek. Stoll has been underrated and I think is more of a podium threat. Marsden is already an AA obviously. Haines best win is Black who is fringe top 20 rn. Probably a qualifier but past that idk.

Wish him the best of luck though. Wants to go and you can't blame anyone for that

I worded that poorly. Independent thoughts that read as if conjoined.

I'd pick Stoll and Marsden for the podium. IMO there's a clear top 4, and they're in the next tier down -- likely AAs but not absolutely upset-proof. Telford lost in round 1 last year, finished 5th (I thought he was a near-lock for the semis, so what do I know?). I wouldn't pick Haines to beat them, but stuff happens at nationals, and he's more athletic than them. Even if that happens, they would likely still finish higher -- again, Telford last year.

I wouldn't pick Haines to make the podium. HWT seems pretty wide-open after the top 10. He could flame out early, or he could win twice and get into the quarters with a favorable draw, at which point he could make it. The stuff happens category usually favors the more athletic guys or the ones with a different style that others have to adjust to. I don't think he's yet capable of a consis run like Telford last year, so he would need a win or preferably 2 in the winners' bracket.

Next season. He will be a redshirt sophomore.
Confirmed? I haven't seen anything official either way.

Over on FOS, Roar looked up the rules and said Haines should meet all the criteria for a one-time transfer exception, which allows immediate eligibility provided Ryan gave him a full release.

Yes, this one.

In the Penn Live article, it says he plans on enrolling at Lock Haven next fall, not saying he isn't enrolling immediately but.....

Not to be cynical, jaded or redundant, but I wonder how "decent" Ryan would have been if Haines wanted to go to Penn State or Iowa.

If that were the case (he was transferring to another Big Ten school) I imagine Ryan would have given his release the same. Haines would have to sit out a year due to Big Ten conference transfer rules, so it's not like Haines would be able to go right away for those schools. Right?

Except PSU has a hole at 285.

I'm pretty sure Ryan said that he would never deny a release to any wrestler that wanted one. IIRC it was when he was coaching Hofstra and Minkel would not release Nik Fekete to Hofstra (who had graduated MSU), thereby Nik couldn't wrestle his final college season.
