how would you interpret that play against the nonsense we heard today in Pittsburgh?

Totally different situation. Replay ruled correctly that Thompkins had initial possession before Ward got in there to tie him up for the 'jump ball'. In that situation, simultaneous possession goes to the offense and thus, touchdown. When they hit the ground, the play is over and Ward eventually wrestling it out of Thompkins's hands is moot.

Tompkins plays for Penn State so the calls should go to us. Plus it was obvious.

I did not see the other play.

The question you need to ask though is "What if this happened to the other team?"

Not a steeler fan. And while I think the rule is stupid, that’s clearly not a TD by the current (albeit stupid) rule

The problem with this ruling is that the rule was misapplied. The official contradicted the rule and himself in that one mitigating factor - the player making a move that changes the direction of his movement - was ignored. In this case, Jesse had been moving toward the sideline. When his knee hit and he realized he was short of the end zone, he turned and lunged toward the end zone. According to that aspect of the rule, it was a TD as soon as the ball broke the plane of the goal line.
