Brody Teske moved into Flo's Top 10 this week, currently ranked #6. He is now 4-0 with 3 of 4 wins over wrestlers who have been in the top 25 at some point this season (most recent win over then #7 Alex Mackall of Iowa St.). Granted, it's early and there's not a lot to base this ranking on, but interesting nonetheless.

Kid has been super motivated since Cael worked with State College police to have him arrested so he could have an excuse to kick him off the team.

In reality, happy for the kid!

At last years PSU vs ASU match, I sat beside Brody’s grandpa and mom. Grandpa was very chatty. He told me Brody was VERY homesick. In late summer, before school started, Brody’s best friend died in a boating accident. A month later, Brody’ pastor, who he was very close to, was murdered during a robbery. All of that plus a nagging injury was weighing heavily on him. Grandpa said the PSU coaches and teammates were extremely compassionate and caring for Brody and his family. Brody and his family loved PSU, but apparently his homesickness was to much to overcome. Grandpa never let on that Brody would be leaving, but I wasn’t surprised when he did. I asked grandpa why he chose PSU over Iowa. He said Brody was strongly leaning towards Iowa. At his official visit, one of the Brands (don’t know which one) told Brody if he wants to be a Hawkeye he “needs toughened up” and instructed the wrestlers to rough him up. Grandpa said they beat the living crap out of him. Brody left and vowed he would NEVER wrestle for Iowa. He then visited PSU and the coaching staff and team welcomed him like no other team did. Wishing nothing but the best for Brody.

If Tom said that imagine what Terry was thinking?

Code reds are pretty popular in recruiting.

Thanks for sharing. I thought it was clear something was bothering Brody last year injury wise. You never really know what someone is battling. Beyond that, to lose your best friend and your mentor within a month, I couldn't imagine.

Kinda doubt things really went down like that. I seriously don’t see Brands telling his wrestlers to rough him up. Iowa has a boatload of lightweights better than Brody and he wasn’t needed (Iowa has Spencer and DeSanto - don’t see him taking them out or having a competitive match when he was in HS. Also have others waiting in the wings). I can believe those guys beat the living crap out of him (unless they were told to flop and not try). Grandpa may have felt a little slighted that Brody wanted to go to Iowa and Iowa wasn’t going after him all that hard.

That said, I am glad to see Brody finding his legs and doing well.

My co-worker is from Ft. Dodge, and I remember him talking about the killing of his pastor. It was a tough situation for him as well, so I sympathize with Brody(and family).

I gotta say, though, Grandpa's story about Iowa doesn't add up. I'm fairly sure that PSU was his only official visit.
He then committed shortly after that. He was supposed to have an official visit to Iowa in September(after PSU visit), but it was canceled. Timeline doesn't add up to where he could have been "roughed up" at Iowa and then "welcomed" at the PSU visit.
Even giving the benefit of the doubt on Grandpa mistaking an official vs unofficial visit, it still doesn't mesh. If Iowa treated him so poorly on an unofficial visit, causing Brody to vow to never wrestle for Iowa, then why would he still have planned an official to Iowa at a later date?

Grandpa certainly seemed sincere. Mom listened in to our conversation and she didn’t disagree with grandpa.

"Instructed the wrestlers to rough him up" and then "beat the living crap out of him." Yeah I'm going to call Bullshit on that lie.

I doubt there is much truth in that story, but for some reason I can't stop laughing about it.

I'm not buying it either. If it were true, how has nobody heard of it until 3 yrs after his campus visit?

Also, if it were true about Teske, there would have to be others.

Whether it’s true or not, I had no reason to disbelieve grandpa and mom didn’t correct him. Was grandpa embellishing somewhat...certainly possible. I didn’t say anything about it on this board last year because I felt it was somewhat personal. In hindsight, I should have continued to keep it to myself.

I doubt Brands instructed anyone to beat him up, but he did in fact get very roughed up in the Iowa room by college guys while he was still in high school. That is pretty well known in Iowa wrestling circles. It was just a visit to campus and some wrestling and he absolutely left there knowing he never wanted to go back. Iowa didn't need him and never offered him to begin with as far as I know. He seems really happy in Cedar Falls and is with three of his high school buddies on that team.

Naw man, we all love stories like this. We know family isn’t always a reliable narrator. Still a good story!

You can't trust his judgement just because he's a grandpa!

I do love it when you post.
Getting beat up in the room is nothing out of the ordinary.
Wanting to see if a kid keeps getting up and jumping back into the Lion's mouth is a good measure of mental toughness.

No one is upset that you shared the story, just that it may be a little biased. I am sure that is Brody's and/or his gramp's perception as to what went down but it is probably somewhere in the middle of all the posts here and Gramp's story. Interesting story nonetheless.

Good story, the jist of it is really not far fetched.

If people think that HS recruits dont get put through the paces on recruiting trips, your naive.

The point made by grandpa seems past a normal feel out, see what he has, see how he reacts situation. Seems like grandpa thought it was a message being sent. It may have been, who knows. Perception isnt always reality but in this story it may be.

I don't fault grandpa either way. I'm happy the poster posted it.

One of my best buds did a recruiting trip to iowa in the late 80s and he said he got worked over hard. He said it was a workout like he hadn't had before. Not abuse like grandpa suggests but just a hard hard workout.

That's iowa. That's wrestling. Tis what it tis.

First post ever on the forum.

I sat beside Brody’s Dad and Mom at the ASU/PSU match and talked to them a lot. Dad mentioned Brody’s homesickness and alluded to the fact that people are a little different between Iowa and the East Coast. My family is from Iowa but I grew up in PA (District 4, wrestled Jimmy Martin twice in HS) and agree small town Iowa is a very close knit situation. He said Brody was learning a lot and they had a lot of fun in the room. At the time it sounded like he wasn’t the happiest, and I wasn‘t shocked when he left. The Teskes were super nice folks.

Also sat behind Cenzo’s and Nick Lee’s parents but didn’t get to chat.

I must have sat in the same row as you, to your right. Vincenzo’s parents were in front of the Teske’s, and the Lee’s in front of the Joseph’s. I was unaware at the time, but I believe Psalm 1 guy mentioned in another thread he sat in the row behind the Teske’s. Sounds like this board was well represented at the ASU match. I talked to VJ’s mom before the match and thanked for wearing her lucky hat. I hope she burned it after that match, lol.

Did you hit him with a Japanese whizzer?😁

I was a freshman and Martin was a senior. We wrestled the dual and then at Sectionals. In retrospect I was beaten so badly I didn’t understand how badly I was getting beaten- the matches ended pretty quickly.

The good news is that he has a younger brother who I beat a few times in the next couple years.

My other claim to fame is that NittanyChris was my roommate a couple years in the dorms at PSU.

Thank you for sharing. It sounds like there is some third hand exaggeration in grandpa's story, especially in the translation of "roughed up". If a coach wants their current wrestlers to work over a potential recruit a little bit to test them out, and the difference between the Iowa and Penn St visits is that in one case, it's Spencer Lee doing the "working over" and in the other it's Devin Schnupp, that in itself can explain the difference between "beat the living crap out of" and "welcomed like no other team". LOL.
