To Redshirt or Not-Decisions facing the top recruits of 2018

Read the article when it first came out. Not bad, though it's the wrestling side of things only. I like to see at least a mention of what these young men have to go through to transition to college, and the maturation needed for some, as well as getting the academic side in order.

Interesting that they picked Gavin to start this year. Most of the opinions that I've read seem to think Teske mans 125lbs while RBY takes 133lbs and Gavin redshirts. And then next year possibly some sort of combo of switching things around with Gavin taking 125lbs while Teske and Busiello shirt or Gavin going 133lbs while RBY shirts.

It will be interesting to see which way they go.

Does anyone know who is physically bigger between Teasdale and Teske? The bigger guy might have more trouble making 125 next year, so maybe let him go this year? Or do coaches not think that way?

Just from matches/pictures I've seen, Teske looks taller/longer and Gavin more stout. I could be wrong, though. The official roster does not list their heights.

Interesting 2nd sentence. In my circle of friends/acquaintances, which gets pretty close to the program :), nearly everyone has Gavin penciled in (note: "penciled in").

I would not be surprised to see Schnupp manning 125 to start the season while Teasdale and Teske go to the Open tournaments unattached. Based upon results and weight management, I would expect one of them to have their shirt removed and man 125 in January.

Your circle of friends are more reliable than the opinions I read online so if that's what they think then I'd go with them. I don't really have a preference so it doesn't matter to me. I'm just interested in seeing who it ends up being.

I have zero inside informants & have never seen Teske in person, but just from my very limited observations on Teas; I am not sure he will continue to make 125. So if he shirted this season then next he would move to 33?

Yeah, I think Teasdale being on the roster listed at 125 means he's going this year. If his plan was to redshirt you'd have to think he'd be at 133 since there would be no pressure to make a tough cut. Similar to Berge last year...

Anything is possible at this point...the belief is that the RS'ing (rotation) works well into future years with Teasdale going 125. Good discussion..

I have to agree. I had been fully committed to the Teasdale will RS camp due to us not needing his points this year and a perceived challenge with the cut. With him formally listed at 125 on the roster it looks like Cael will at least see if he can make it this year. I suspect both Teas/Teske will go in open tourneys through the scuffle and we might just see Schnupp again until Cael is ready to pull the trigger close to mid-season. No reason to burn two shirts unnecessarily until he can guage what level both are at this year.

With Busiello on the way in, other than developing in the room, which Cael seems to have mastered, some wonder if Teske may struggle even breaking through the lineup other than as a result of redshirt juggling.

I am as guilty as most re the above; we are all probably underestimating Teske's ceiling. Yes he hasn't delivered in some of the bigger tourneys out there but his state record speaks for itself, and you have to love any kid who signs up to come from out of state into this room with known stud blue chip competition at his weight and another on the way. I have heard his work ethic is amazing and it is pretty clear he is up to any challenge short of sitting behind Spencer for three years. No blame from me on that one.

Teske will be a career 125 imo. Teske has had struggles from bottom against high level guys, but that is an area I would expect rapid improvement. He has a huge motor and a very gritty style of wrestling. I think after a redshirt year he will be a solid contributor at 125. Gavin is probably more "game ready" at this time.

I don't think Teske gets enough credit. I think he's a bonafide blue chip recruit. He's a 4X Iowa champ who lost one match in high school, to another 4X Iowa champ who's only lost is to Teske. I wouldn't count Teske out. We're lucky to have Teasdale, Teske, RBY, and then Busiello coming in who I think is another blue chip recruit.

Keep in mind, highly doubtful that Busiello ever sees 125 in college. He wrestled 126 as a high school junior. Teske could be a rarity, a career 125 pounder, for that reason alone, outstanding chance to start a lot at PSU.

I agree with this. Seeing Busiello last year, he looks like he could really fill out. I could see him being kinda like David Taylor where he was small but keeps growing and filling out and becomes a middleweight in college (141-149 or so)

I wouldn't be surprised with a Busiello greyshirt next year.

DT wrestled 112 as a high school junior. So who knows?

Here's my wild stab projection at how the 25 thru 49 weights could play out for the next 4 seasons:

2018-19 Teasdale, Young, Lee, Berge. Teske redshirts

19-20 Teske, Young, Lee, Verk. Berge moves to 57, Teasdale redshirts, Busiello greyshirts

20-21 Teske, Teasdale, Young, Verk. Busiello, Lee redshirts

21-22 Teske, Teasdale, Busiello, Lee. Young redshirts

I think this is really pretty good and accurate

i'd be happy with this for sure, but redshirting between JR and SR year (like you have for both lee and RBY) doesn't seem like it happens that often, especially if the guys are already multiple time AA's like we hope they will be.

Worked out well for Nico, although that may be why he is always getting beat in the room.

Busiello went; 99, 99, 106, 120, 126 from 7th through 11th grade. It'll be interesting, and a bit telling, where he goes in the coming year. As a 126 pound junior, it is highly unlikely he'll see 125, and may grow past other weight classes too. One way to gauge size is to look at Mom and Dad.
