I like Mountain View. If you have never played it you should give it a shot.

IF Toftrees is in good shape.... not even close... It's better! However, Mt. View is definitely improving.
I would agree with that. I like playing different courses, so MV gives you something different. I like Skytop too, but that can be tough if you are having an off day.

I have played all 3. I would rank them Toftrees, Elks, Mountain View. But it has been 2 year since I played any of them.

You might like Mountain View more now, as it's a little more "golfer friendly". Some major changes to the front nine. For one, that stupid par 5 around the pole is no longer there(unfortunately, the green is). Also, #7 is a little longer and is now a par 5. Was a really nasty par 4 last year.

LOL, you played all THREE?
The Elks is now called Mountain View... There is a third course (besides the university Blue and White courses) at Sky Top... used to be called Freestone... I think they changed the name to Sky Top...

Ooops...told you it had been a while. I didn't know the Elks had changed their name.

I hated Freestone. Wow...that course kicked my arse.

Not sure what the name of the course I played was if it wasn't Mountain View. It was north of Bellefonte. Little 9 hole piece of crap.

Is Centre Hills still around? I played that course once as a guest many years ago. Nice course back when I played it.

Mountain View is usually in very good shape but has been a few years since I played there. I don't really like the changes they made. Changed a lot of holes to improve one. The front 9 is now 2892 from the back tees including a 258 yard par four. Seven used to be a great hard hole now it is a 480 yard par 5.

Toftrees is a better course to play. I love hole number 1. Tough opening hole. Greens are mostly interesting.

Skytop Mountain is a great layout but I am not sure if condition will ever be such as to make it a regular track. I haven't been there yet this year, but it has been improving. I like to walk and it is a bear.

I am a member at PSU mostly because it is too good of a deal to get 2 courses of unlimited play for $1,300. Overall I enjoy both of the courses as much as any of the other local courses.

I can't imagine anyone telling you that Mountain View is a better course. It's a joke of a course compared to Toftrees. It's conditioning might be better at times, but no way is the course itself better.

It's a nice course, three very different nines though. The greens are generally considered to be the best in the area. However, it's private and you'll need to play with a member to play there.

They held a US Open qualifier at Toftrees a couple of years ago. The pros seemed to like it because it has some legit par fives which are hard to find at many courses these days. If you are a big hitter most courses par fives become par fours but Toftrees has two holes that are 600 from the tips.

That is definitely a nice advantage. I have my own thoughts on what makes a good course. Each nine should have a reachable par 5 and a driveable 4. At least one 200+ yard par 3 and one 450+ yard par 4 on the course. The rest can be any mix of long and short holes but that is what I like in a layout. Throw in good challenging green complexes and you are set.

At least in my book.

Toftrees is a great course - the #17 is a very long Par 5 - plays 600 yards from the tips. It's one of those holes you should try from the tips, just for fun.

I have played Freestone and hope to play it again soon. There is a great Par 3 that sits high above the valley, and if you get real lucky, you will see a glider going by. I enjoy Freestone mostly because I can drop down a club to play off the tees, as it is a narrow course, and ball control is important. (not that I have any).

It would be 600 yards plus if you played it from the 16th tee. Both 8 and 14 are over 600, but 17 is only 528.

Toftrees would have all of the above, save the driveable par 4. But #9 is one when it's played from the white tees (that said, 9 is such a better hole from the back tees (200+ carry over water) that I wouldn't make that change. If you really wanted to play the course with all of the above, I'd suggest hitting from the ladies tees on 7 instead - assuming you can bomb one 300).

I grew up playing the Elks. It was the best course in town. I haven't played it since it changed to Mountain View.

Do you know (or anyone else) know the answers to the following regarding Centre Hills and Toftrees?

1. Annual Fees for both
2. Initiation fees for Centre Hal CC and is is an "equity" membership in that I can sell my membership back later?
3. If I join either, what are my real greens fees for a round....greens fee, cart , tips etc...

TIA

Here's the info for Toftrees: If you join there, your only expenses for a round are $18 for a cart; but, as a member, you also have the option of walking for a $3 trail fee (annual cart and trail fee rates are available - and detailed in the link)

I don't have the specifics for Centre Hills but I'd estimate them to be roughly double Toftrees.
