York Haven, Pa.
First 4th of July after PA changed the rules regarding fireworks. I'm betting the ambulance crews and fire companies will be busy tonight. Here in south central Pa it has been over 90 with no rain for about a week. The grass is a little crunchy today. Perfect weather for grass fires.

Two weeks ago I went down to the Shrewsberry area to one of the big fireworks stores along Rt. 83. I wanted to check things out and get some small stuff for the grand kids (1.5, 2.5, and 7). The prices of the stuff are super high. I got a bag of little stuff and it was $80!

I saw entire families with multiple shopping carts loaded with the big stuff. The price tags on some of those things were $400 or more. I'm asking myself, how in the world do some of these people afford this? It had to have been thousands of dollars for some of them.

Anyway, best of luck to everyone tonight! I'll be keeping an eye on the neighbors with the garden hose in my hand to keep the house from burning down.

Please be very careful with the fireworks, Coach Narduzzi. We want you to be Pitt's coach for a very, very, very long time!

As a dog owner, I hope Senor Darwin has a field day tonight and the herd gets culled... glad I live where I’m not directly affected by these mouthbreathers and their toys that go “boom”. #dopes

Rather subdued in my hood tonight and it's usually pretty loud by this hour.

We had our development fireworks last night. It went over great even though it was as hot as hell. The only thing that changed is that those fireworks that are now legal are so much more expensive then before. I believe we will travel out of state next year like we used to have to do and save some money.

It sounds as if Penna fireworks are now sold by the equivalent of “State Stores”. Does anyone know what taxes are placed on fireworks relative to general sales taxes?

I just found my answer

On October 30, 2017, Governor Tom Wolf signed into law Act 43 of 2017, establishing a consumer fireworks tax on each separate sale at retail of consumer fireworks within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The tax is imposed at a rate of 12% on the sales price of consumer fireworks. The 12% tax is in addition to the sales and use tax already imposed on such sales

“I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty; it ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

Then there are those of us who’ve had to deal with dogs that bark nonstop for hours, crap in yards, attack people when off leash, etc.

We all have our crosses to bear.

Live in Whitehall and it was a insane for about 3 hours. Curious what it will be like this weekend. Great weather forecasted. Have a big party here at our house on Saturday but I would rather spend my money on a great beer selection and a killer smoked meat menu.

12% on top of the 6% sales tax.
They must charge a lot of money for those things (I have never purchased them) in order to support the 3 relatively new fireworks stores at the PA/NJ border on I78. I drive by them on my way to and from work every day. The lots are mostly empty every day with the exception of early July and late December (New Years).

Every year I go to a 4th Party at a friend's house; he's a tenured firemen. his home abuts a large display and we watch from his backyard. well, his daughter is friends with my daughter. Long story short, many years ago he was assigned to hang out at a local community fireworks display. A large shell went sideways into the crowd and hit a 12 year old girl in the head as it exploded. My friend was the first on the scene. She was, for all intents and purposes, dead when he got there. 7 other people were injured, although none seriously.

This guy has seen it all from car accidents to gas explosions to shootings. This one haunts him every day of his life. I always think of that when my kid wants sparklers or m-80s or whatever.

Saw something similar back in my teens, refuse to buy or set them off to this day.
