Top Ten Head Coaches right now in College Football ?

I don’t know who should populate the entire list, but I think the list should include whoever is coaching tight ends for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Reactions: Statewise
Kirby Smart- UGA
Lincoln Riley - OU
Chris Petersen - Washington
James Franklin - You know where
Kirk Ferentz - Iowa - mostly because of longevity and some level of consistency...

...and from "more of reflection that they are the best of the worst".....

Jim Harbaugh - Mich
Mark D'Antonio- MSU
Ed Oregeron - LSU
Brian Kelly - Notre Dame
David Shaw - Stanford
Pat Fitzgerald - Northwestern

Too early to tell
Tennessee, UCLA, Florida, Miami, Oregon, Nebraska,

I had no real criteria....just names that popped into my head when I consider who is among the best coaches....each has plusses and minuses - our boy Franklin gets the nod for raising expectations, winning the Big Ten, and of his losses in the last three years, only two were blow outs (two more than I like)....and oh yeah....recruiting.

Edit - I assumed this thread to mean head coaches....

My top 5 in order:

1. Saban
2. Dabo
3. Jim Harbaugh
4. Smart
5. Riley

James Franklin could enter the top 5 with a B1G championship or two - he's close

How do we take this guy seriously? He puts Jim "Third Place" Harbaugh in third (maybe that's what's confusing him???).

Then he leaves out James Franklin with a caveat that if he wins "A" B1G championship, he could enter his top five.

I would think he just reused his list from 3 years ago, except Smart's first season in Georgia was 2016 and Riley's first season was this past season. So there goes that theory.

Jim has also won an NFC championship and tied for the B1G East championship last year !!!!

Saban
Dabo
Petersen
Patterson
Smart
Riley
Gundy
Franklin
Shaw
Frost

Am I forgetting anyone that should be in? Ferentz, Fitz, Harbaugh on the outside of the top 10 IMO

LOL Franklin ahead of Harbaugh and in the top 10 because PSU blocked 1 punt against OSU. Or is Franklin in the top 10 because PSU is great and working on becoming elite.

Are we talking selling used cars? Still the most delusional fan base in the Big10.

Frost 0 vs Harbaugh 2 but Frost is a top 10 coach.

In no order Shaw, Riley, Saban, Swinney, Petersen, Mark Stoops, Franklin

Been drinking too much of that flint water again?

It was a blocked fg actually.

But here's a blocked punt you may remember

When it comes to michigan football, the real discussion should be whether hairball is even more overrated than bo schembechler. Granted, bo underachieved for many more years, but give hairball time.

Three that should be there among the other usual candidates:
Matt Campbell, Iowa State
Kyle Wittingham, Utah,
Wild card = Bill Clark, UAB (maybe not top 10, but close)

Matt Rhule could make that push in the next few years too.

I think this is an excellent list. I’d replace Gundy with Mack Brown. Franklin probably deserves to be on the list due to his recruiting and moving the program forward but he’s near the back of that top ten due to the gaffes and reputation among his peers as overhyped (I’d that’s accurate and not just media crap). He’s also young and hopefully still on his way up.

Harbaugh’s record at Michigan and Franklin’s here are pretty comparable, although I don’t want to see them that way. And I’m inclined to give Franklin more benefit of the doubt due to the sanctions.

Mack has not coached in a long time, so I could not put him on the list. The OP said I could use whatever criteria I wanted, so one of mine was - you had to be coaching at least last year.

The reality about Harbaugh probably lies in the middle. He’s a good coach, not bad or great. However the hubris and arrogance of Michigan fans can’t accept that. Just like Bo and Carr, legends only in the minds of Michigan fans, with a whole bunch of media hype.

Well, Lee Miles historically has been a good coach. We’ll find out if KU can ruin that reputation over the next few years!
