Last Spring, Jven Williams had two impressive personal bests in the shot and discus at 66'7" and 189'1" respectively. Both were highly competitive from a national perspective.

Chimdy Onoh had personal bests of 61'4" and 175'6" respectively, by far the best in MD last year.

While Jven clearly had the better season, Chimdy's throws were still very good. Weight events, especially putting the shot, are good indicators of explosive strength. If Onoh pursues track this spring, I would expect improvement to rival what Jven did last year.

Of course, if young Mr. Onoh chooses a school other than PSU, this will have been a wasted exercise for everyone other than track and field geeks.

It does make me feel better about his potential with those numbers. As I said before, the conference he plays in is exceptionally weak. lots of 170 pound defensive ends.

Good to see that explosiveness coupled with the size of those two guys.

I like to see recruits who have had success in track and field and also wrestling. Don't see as many high level athletes nowadays who play both football and basketball for their full high school careers. But I do recall Joe Paterno liked to scout his prospective recruits when they played basketball games; said he could tell about their explosiveness, coordination, and quickness.

Now that he has made his commitment, I hope he'll return to track and field for his senior spring. He can lift and throw, without interfering too much with his college prep training too much. He has the talent to have a big Spring in the weight events.

Well, a pretty important question regarding that....

Did he enroll early at Penn State and is on campus already?
If so, won't he be busy with conditioning and spring football practice?

The kid who committed today is not an EE.

Thanks and I understand that point.

I was thinking more about Jven Williams. Did he enroll rarly? Do we know if he plans to continue with the shot and discus? As noted, his performance in those events is among the best nationally for high school.

He is enrolled. HS career is over. Probably would have broken last years marks, but he's taking part in the spring training.
