Cool interview with the future Lion and he gave positive comments regarding RBY in the final couple minutes.

He mentioned that RBY told him that he wanted to commit to PSU and he responded with [paraphrasing] "I do too, let's do it!" He also said something to the effect of "Its gonna be fun!" regarding him and RBY going to PSU.

It's a good interview and he seems like a great kid! The RBY nuggets at the end lead to some optimism in light of current speculation, but nothing really definitive.

Neat fact, he actually wrestled against RBY way back when at a tourney and became friends with him after...

Thanks for the find. Looks like I've got something to listen to on my morning commute (with FRL for the evening drive)

Good idea! Is there an iPhone app that will download YouTube videos? I don't wan't to use up my data plan in the car. Thanks for any ideas!

I got about halfway thru it before work this morning (it's almost an hour long) and suggest watching if possible. Wittlake's face lights up at certain points of the interview, such as talking about him dominating.

Kid seems like a real good personality fit for the team.

Wow what a dynamic. These kids dedicate their lives to wrestling then after years of work they get to step into the PSU wrestling room. Train with other kids like themselves and be coached by Cael. The work all these individuals put in coming together to create something greater.

Back half is the highlight. Lots of good stuff.

He's walking around at 181-82 so looking like he's slowly growing into a great replacement for Bo. Perfect timing

Great kid. Nice to see a PNW kid as a Lion. Our club used to always go to that tourney that he wrestled RBY at. I remember my good friends son wrestling Wittlake 3 times at Pocatello. In semis and I think finals of greco

Seems about right. Keeping his weight down so he can make one more run at cadet worlds at 76KG

Watching this and considering how long and hard these kids compete helps me to understand Cael's focus on fun. He's worried about burn out. Two stories:
I was wrestling at a small division three college in western PA ( Washington and Jefferson) when some D1 kids came to scrimmage. There was one kid we all thought was the best thing we'd ever seen. We heard a short while later he'd blown out his knee and his career was over. My roommate and I were from out of state and expressed our horror that such an amazing talent had lost access to his sport. The PA kids shrugged and said he didn't give a f**k. It was a window into how hard those kids had been working for so long and how that work could become a burden.
2) Last fall the PSU bloggers were asking Cael about Hall. He said that IF Mark maintained his enthusiasm he would accomplish great things. It struck me as very odd at the time but I think Cael is working with kids who've given everything to something for a long time. Kids who've carried the hopes and expectations of everyone around them for a long time. I think Cael needs to keep it fun.

There has to be a middle ground, that your lows are never that low and your highs never that high.

I agree with you on burnout, this sport can chew you up and spit you out in a single match or tournament. If you are without proper perspective, or without the proper support structure you could go full PD3 in a single moment.

to that end anyone want to take a bet that PD3 cleans up his act and is back at ISU next season? Ill kick my winnings from Gunz to you!!!! ;)

Well...if you went to W&J, I know you are smart, introspective and well educated. What fraternity did you join?

I found myself thinking about the financial commitment for Travis' family and others like him. He mentioned his Dad will be doing a lot of flying. There must be a lot of sacrifices made by the families.

Also, Travis mentioned recommending kids make a top 5 list of schools during recruiting. Does anyone know what his or Roman's top 5 were before their PSU commitment? TIA.

Good interview! Those of us who follow PSU wrestling tend to think of Cael's 8 years here as "new". Listening to Wittlake say he's always wanted to be a Nittany Lion really hits home that PSU has been at the top almost since the day he started wrestling.

What a great position to be in ... many of the best kids are growing up wanting to be part of our program. Talk about a recruiting advantage!

Speaking of kids starting wrestling about the time the Cael era started, did anyone just see what Carson Manville just did?

FULL COURT PRESS !!!!

HE WILL BE BETTER THAN HIS BROTHER !!!!

HE NEEDS TO COMPLETE MIDDLE SCHOOL ONLINE WHILE AT THE NLWC !!!!
TBar has a thread on TheMat about Carson. I wonder if he's our Spyker - same unbridled enthusiasm; same unrepentant homerism

That said, Carson appears to be worth the hype

I got a bid from ATU and all my friends pledged but I transferred out after my freshman year. The most memorable part of all that was being able to loose four pounds in 45 minutes working out at the local high school. Those kids worked so hard there was about an inch of sweat on the floor at all times. I went to Ranger school after college and we did not work harder than those kids at that western PA high school.

Hopefully Mason has a nice career so Carson is inclined to follow his path. Also, because I want to see a kid that is so doubted do well(Mason). All we've heard is he is odd man out, Suffered too many losses, Greco specialist, traveled too much switching schools. The kid is dam tough and hard working, intelligent. Sounds like the Stormin Mormon 2.0, minus the Mormon part.

O yea....Carson is a BEAST....Yes in my opnion he will be better than his brother Mason and thats saying something...Years ago when i had my son at a tournament his Dad told me look out for Carson my younger one....Yes. I hope Cael and staff are on him big time...I want Edmond Ruth and Carson Manville !!!! Ruth is going to start exploding onto the scene after a year at Blair....

Carson was in Shakopee all season, I assume. Dad was in his corner (Shakopee has like 15 coaches, and that's not much of an exaggeration) all year. He showed up to a freestyle tournament last weekend with Wrestling Prep singlets on (Prep. School/team in California) and listed his hometown/club as VA for Journeymen...

He's so fun to watch. I have a feeling he's going to end up moving around like brother, but it could be all a bunch of coincidences that one is reading into. He's absolutely great, though. Constantly trying to score.

I'm a W&J guy too. The real school who controls PA!
