Triple Option - Robinson (FB), Barkely & Sanders (RBs)

Just one of the many reasons the wishbone became extinct.......you put your 3 best RBs on the field. One gets injured you are putting in your 4th best RB and so on,,,,,,,, If one back is more talented, defenses can easily take him away.

Not really. It was too hard maintaining the field with crowns on them!!!

Texas had what was then considered a nearly unstoppable wishbone in 1972. PSU held them without a touchdown to win 30-6 in the Cotton Bowl, employing a similar "mirror" defense used by ND against Texas the previous year.

I've always thought, if a defense is disciplined, the triple option or "wishbone" could be stopped. Too one dimensional? Probably.

Yes you are correct I forgot about McSorley. the wishbone or I like to call it the "OQ" or "Option Quad" gotta give it a different name as the "wishbone" is so 70s-ish.

:)
also must consider that there is an issue with recruiting......another reason it works for the academies, as MOST of those athletes are not dreaming of a pro football career.

You can run the option out of different formations. We ran it out of the I in high school. Navy lines up in what looks like a wing-T. The FB dive is the 1st option, QB keep is the 2nd and the pitch back the 3rd. Usually the QB reads the tackle to determine whether to give it to the FB, then reads the DE to decide whether to keep it or not, the pitch man is the last option, but the one you like to get the ball to because he is usually the best runner and he is outside in more space. I loved watching Navy dominate Pitt with this offense. It is a fun offense to run and watch, but you have to have a QB that is good at it and it's tough to be a good option team and also throw the ball well, which is why it's not real popular.

I

like your thought, but Robinson is not a FB. All 3 RB's have different running styles that I hope our coaches can maximize their skills on certain situations.

Where did steve smith, Aaron Harris or Franco typicllly line up at PSU?

all things considered, the wishbone was unstoppable with one week to prepare. Unless the QB was fumbling. it was an absolute thing of beauty to behold when running on all cylinders. That's why teams like Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama were so dominate. It was a little different in a bowl setup because teams could prep for a month or so and could slow it down. But wow what a time consumer and rushing yards stat machine.

Pitt is very familiar with the offense, and they still couldn't stop it. That is the really pathetic thing. It shows what a terrible gameday coach Narduzzi is.

How are we familiar with the triple option? Or moreover, how is Narduzzi completely familiar with the triple option? He had a game against Georgia Tech which he won but before that he had to refer to game film from Paul Chryst and when he was a defensive coordinator at Miami (OH).

Navy ran the ball against everyone they played and they had one of the best option quarterbacks running it for four straight years who ended up setting all time NCAA records.

Well, he coaches in a division with a team that runs it, so it shouldn't be a surprise. He inherited a roster that has faced Navy and Ga Tech a few times recently. Given the limited amount of teams that run that offense, his players had a ton of experience against it compared to what most teams what would have. Add in he is a "defensive genius" who had plenty of time to prepare for Navy.

Face it, Narduzzi made some pretty ballsy moves, caught some people by surprise, and the ball bounced his way most of the time. He easily could have lost quite a few of the games he won, and chances are people won't be fooled next time. Given his embarrassing sideline behavior and poor recruiting, if one or two bounces had gone the other way, you would be calling for his head already. Lucky for you he will be gone before you know it!
