lineman, offensive I think, from around Philly. It was big news, as he was one of the top lineman in the country. I remember seeing his picture on the front of the sports page. I can't remember his name and it's driving me crazy. I was thinking about it last night as I thought about Kaindoh.

That's a good guess but this guy was an African American. By the way Keith Downey was from Emmaus I believe.

I think we have a winner, Randy Crowder. Seems to me he had quite a career. I really didn't follow college football much at that time but I remember that it was a big deal for PSU to get him. Maybe we'll get a surprise today. It would be a nice Christmas present.

Randy Crowder was a senior on the 1973 squad that went 12-0 and managed a #5 ranking. He was recruited in 1970.

Keith Dorney was a 1975 recruit.

OL recruits who were black and recruited around those years or maybe later who come to mind:
Jim Brown
Eric Cunningham
maybe Irv Pankey at TE

I could be way off on who you have in mind, though.

Off the top, I don't recall where any of those guys were from, though. They were all very good at PSU; Pankey played mostly TE in college (he may have moved to OT in '78?) and had a looong career at OT in the NFL. His sons played at Oregon State and played in the 2008 game at Beaver Stadium.

Irv Pankey was from MD, Aberdeen?

My brother wouldn't let dorney into a party at phi psi one night and dorney threw him into the bushes. My brother was 6,2 210 at the time and in great shape.

Last time I saw Keith was 5 years ago, at his Dad's house. He was about 6-5 240 lbs. In great shape. Nice guy, just like his Dad.

Just missed the final 4 playoff that year as well.

G Damn committee. ; )

Cunningham and Brown were both from Ohio. Brown's career was disappointing from a fan's perspective. He was from Cinci Moeller, and started at guard for the Lions as a soph. Had a devastating leg injury apparently which effectively ended his career.

Thanks for the corrected info. I didn't recall Brown's injury.
I'm at a loss for who this guy could be that the OP referenced. May have to go actually look up something instead of depending on my sometimes iffy memory!

My brother wouldn't let dorney into a party at phi psi one night and dorney threw him into the bushes. My brother was 6,2 210 at the time and in great shape.

I had a similar experience when I was a pledge at Fiji and had door duty. We had a guest list, and even though we knew most of the guests anyway, there were some we didn't. So my head was buried in the list and someone started to walk past me into the house. I grabbed the guy's pants leg and started to say 'hang on a minute... are you on the list?', still not looking up. I got to about 'hang...' when suddenly - bam! - my arm was knocked away by the guy's forearm. I looked up at Tom Rafferty, who announced 'Yeah I'm on the list and if I'm not, put me on it.' Me: 'Uh yeah, go ahead in.' And he was on the list after all. We usually let the football players from Phi Delt in anyway, kind of a reciprocal agreement.

Another Rafferty story that one of the guys in the house told from a bowl game practice: Rafferty had been named All-American at Guard in I think '75 - his senior season. He was having a bad practice shortly after that info came out, and JVP noticed.... from way across the field. Joe came running over to the offense screaming, "Rafferty, if you're an All-American, I'm Ka-Noot Rockne!" Players cracked up and everyone relaxed. We still lost the Sugar Bowl to Bama.

How about Craig Brown???
I may have mixed up the two guys with the same last name. He was around that time, but again I don't know where he was from.

Randy Crowder was from Farrell, PA. Last PA exit on route 80 before crossing into Ohio.

Terrific athlete; in addition to football, he played on one of Farrell's state championship basketball teams.
Had a PE track class with Randy. Saw him high jump 6 feet which back then for a 245 DT was very impressive! He had huge thighs.

At the time, I think Dorney was the largest kid I had ever seen in the flesh. For the time, he was a monster. I had a few classes with him, and found him to be a nice enough guy, although I learned not to sit right behind him because he completely blocked my view of the front of the class.

That was back when the freshmen football players all lived in West Halls.

Pankey was from Havre de Grace Maryland.

Thanks, Phil.
Any idea who the OP is referencing (OL recruit, Phila area, early-mid 70s, big-time get for PSU, black player)? My last suggestion was Craig Brown, but I can't recall if he is white or black or where he is from.
I'm out of off-the-top ideas without going back to do some research.

Got to say guys, it could have been any of the afore mentioned players. Time goes by and the memory fades. Turned out to be a good thread though.

Ed Monaghan from Bonner. He meets all of your criteria, but he was white.

TOO BAD YOU ALL MISSED IT!

However, I admit some clues were altered to throw you off.

1. He was from Appleton. Wisconsin.
2. The year was 1964.
3. He was white.
4. He was injured in Vietnam.
5. He played running back.
6. He was recruited by Notre Dame.
7. Art Rooney sent him the note, Rock - the team's not doing well. We need you!
8. Yes, the correct answer is Jefferson Street Terry Staubach.
