Not sure he is capable of reversing course (seems like he is digging in, more than anything else), but he could show serious leadership by bringing this shutdown to a close. I think he is the person in the best position to resolve the present impasse. They were already close to a deal. He should get Lindsey Graham and that group of thirty or so senators into his office and hammer out a deal. He'd have the opportunity to take credit for it in his SotU speech.
