Just for fun, anybody want to help compile a list of players who never would have worn a Penn State uniform if the staff had a rule against offering two-star prospects.

I'll start: Jack Ham. Shane Conlan. Allen Robinson. Jordan Hill.

No I'm not going to help.

But our new DT commit was 200 LBs as a HS soph, so definitely a late bloomer as a DT. If it's reasonable to call a 17 year old young man a late bloomer.....

Using Rivals ratings, I see:

K Kevin Kelly
DT Chris Baker (transferred, NFL)
DB/RB Stephon Green
DE/OL Gary Gilliam (NFL)
K Sam Ficken
TE Kyle Carter
OL Wendy Laurent
OL Derek Dowery
RB Mark Allen

There are a ton of Paul Cianciolo types though.

Another exercise would be to list the number of 4 and 5 star guys who did very little or didn't live up to the hype. Here are all the Rivals 4 * prospects we landed in 2002 (I count three solid contributors and two All American types; and six who did nothing or very little):

Jason Alford
J.R. Zwierzynski
Brian Borgoyn
Levi Brown
Mark Farris
Chris Wilson
Tamba Hali
Brandon Snow
Josh Hannum
Calvin Lowry
Jim Kanuch

A couple more:

Ohrnberger
Shuler
Plus Terry, Farrell, Dowery, and Barham all played some

ah, my fault. Still, selling Levi Brown way short calling him a 'solid contributor'

You're right; he and Hali would both be 'All American' types. I've edited my earlier post.

Mickey Shuler is a good one. The staff was CRUCIFIED on these boards for days for taking that kid (no offers, legacy recruit, etc). He was a good player and bounced around the NFL for several years.

As always, it's an individual thing. There are kids who will exceed expectations and there are kids who will fall short. But in the main, I'll take a team of 4 star high school players against anyone's 2 star team and like my chances 96 out of 100 times. Doesn't mean there aren't great 2 stars that weren't properly assessed or who won't blossom... but i'd wager it's the rare 2 star who is ready to play as a freshman. [although i'm sure i'm about to get a list of them... ;)]

For now, if the coaches grab a 2 star player I'm willing to give them the BOTD and see how it plays out.

There are a few guys who exceeded expectations. Going back to the days of Jack Ham and Shane Conlan is sort of moot.

Odds are against 2 stars but I think anyone should be happy with one or two 2 star guys a year. Especially when they are rounding out an excellent class. Frankly it means the coaches are doing their jobs and finding guys not everyone is paying attention to.

Not sure what u r saying with the 4/5 stars,

Alford was very good
Ferris was a 2/3 star
Brown was a #1 draft pick
Hali was an AA player and All Proi remember Hannum as the first early commit, not that highly rated.

How about the WR Bell, 5 star that didn't contribute due to pulling a knife on another player and getting biotech

Again, I used Rivals star ratings for my non-scientific analysis. You can go to this page and view every Penn State recruiting class since 2002. Ferris is listed as a four star prospect, and I acknowledged Alford, Hali, and Brown were all very good players at Penn State. Further, those recruits I listed were ONLY for 2002. The list of big time busts is a long one for sure....

After seeing his film and realizing that his Rivals rating is 5.4 and Gellerstedt is 5.5 I see him clearly as a solid 3 star TALENT. There was not much negative talk when Gellerstedt committed. Sort of like "diamond" in the rough.
In short, both of these guys need a year or two of development in college. I believe BOTH will be playing a lot of quality football for PSU :)
I am by no means an expert but look at the film (on both of these guys) maybe it's just me?

Deon Buttler, unranked walk on to Pro WR
Matt McGloin - Walk on to Pro QB (who happened to beat our Tyrell Pryor (#1 overall recruit) for the Raiders starting QB job a couple years ago)

Both 24/7 and Scout have Dwumfour as a three star. "Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad" :)

When considering whether a recruit is a 2/3/4-star rated player, I prefer to use Penn State's system for listing players as All Americans: the sole criterion is that the player must be named to a FIRST-team All American selection by a recognized source. It doesn't matter whether the player was a 2nd or 3rd team pick by MOST services; if he got a single 1st team selection, Penn State lists him officially as an All American.

Hence, when I mention a recruited player, I consider his highest "star count" by any of the 4 major rating services (Scout, 247, Rivals, ESPN) to be his "official" rating. For example, last year Jonathan Holland was rated 3-stars by Rivals, 247, and Scout, but he was a 4-star on ESPN. So I consider him a 4-star recruit.

Seems fair to me.
