Lou is one of a dying breed ... well maybe not dying in the mortal sense, but dying in the media sense.
Think of Joe in his last several years and how he didn't always have the total command of his words - lots of stammering and not what we all wish we could remember him for. Well Lou was that way on network television. What the man said was usually spot on correct, but he didn't always sound great saying it.
He was an unabashed Domer Homer and I can't criticize that - I'm an unabashed PSU Homer.
He is a bridge to the past, a disciple of Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Darrell Royal, Bear Bryant and Joe Paterno. That's not such a bad thing.
I had the good fortune to meet him on a golf course ... he was playing in a Pro-Am at St. Clair Country Club the day before the old Family House Golf Tournament here in Pittsburgh. I was walking out on the course with a co-worker when Lou comes strolling down the fairway to hit a second shot. Beer in one hand, sandwich in the other. My co-worker starts calling out to him to come over and sign an autograph. Old Lou strolls over with that signature ND ball cap on and gets in my buddy's face (they were both about 5 feet 7 inches tall) and simply says "didn't your mother ever tell you to not bother a dog when he's eating?" Then he tells us how he got the beer and sandwich (another story for a different post), finishes his snack and signs my friend's program.
