UNLV QB Matt Sluka Quits Team After Three Games Due To Broken Promises (just when you thought you heard it all in college football!)

Players are simply controlling their red shirts and eligibility--I'm not sure why people think that's in some way wrong
Now, with Sluka--there's a lot to work through on this one to determine what actually happened

For all the posts saying he was stupid for not getting the promise in writing, to do so would have been considered pay-to-play. Everyone is in a tough spot due to the stupidity and stubbornness of the NCAA. I have to believe that both sides of the transaction would like to have the agreement in writing, but they can’t do that before an athlete enrolls otherwise it’s pay-to-play. So the athlete is left hoping that people fulfill their promise, and the NIL contributors are hoping they don’t pay a kid a boatload of money only to have him later say “thanks for the cash, but I think I want to transfer again”. Isn’t that what Quinn Evers did to OSU?

It’s all so ridiculous. The toothpaste is out of the tube so no turning back. They just need to make college a semi-pro league and have real contracts in place.
Real contracts won't alter NIL money though--that will be on top of the real contracts

you make a good point. It is possible the coach was speaking for NIL donors but they didn't come through. The coach has no leverage. But the kid didn't get what he was expecting so I understand his side, as well. Really, this is a total mess. I think NIL "collectives" are better managed by the schools but outside of that, if the money isn't forthcoming, there is nothing the school can do to make it happen.

The link below quotes the athletic department, the coach, and the NIL collective extensively...and honestly, taken together, their side of the story seems pretty convincing.

It really does appear that Sluka's case comes down to a claim of a verbal offer made (or not) by an assistant coach. But I don't think anyone with real authority at (or associated with) the school ever signed on:

But--all that matters is that he was misled, right?
Personally, I have a hard time buying this "Football player Matthew Sluka’s representative made financial demands upon the University and its NIL collective in order to continue playing" we're talking about that makes Garrett Greene (@knickslions can drink) look like an accurate QB with his stellar 43% comp percentage this year and averaging less than 200 yards (including rushing yards) per game. Their game against the powerhouse that is Utah Tech even makes those numbers better than they are.
Something is off here...with Allen also leaving it just feels like there's smoke her. I don't remember Pinkel being the most "trustworthy" guy at Mizzou either.

Well it appears to be a case of he-said-she-said, and there's no way to prove who said what. How Sluka could have hitched his wagon to such a verbal assurance from a lower-level coach is beyond me. And if the guy did have an agent who let him do it, well, that's beyond me too. I mean, no need for legal sophistication here...just ordinary common sense.

Therefore, at the end of the day, I think the question is not really whether Sluka was misled but rather who did the misleading and was that person acting with the knowledge and authority of the school and the collective. I'm inclined to think not on the latter point.

That said, I agree with you that the RB taking the same route right on Sluka's heels seems...odd.

Yeah, we'll likely never really know and, truthfully, it doesn't really matter. I just don't think any of this, other than the RB following him, give us much insight.
I do think it's getting a lot more attention than needed given Sluka's level--but I'm guilty of that too

With no contracts this is a risk. A player agrees to X in nil money. Plays well through a few games and asks for more money.

It's early but at least against Fresno State it doesn't look like Sluka is missed.
I was going to say. They’ve probably forgotten him already

Hajj-Malik Williams threw for 182 yards, rushed for 119 yards and accounted for four total touchdowns in his first start for the Rebels after Sluka opted to leave the program Wednesday over a dispute about his NIL compensation.”

At least we can be sure no players are involved with gamblers right? Especially in Las Vegas. And New York. And Chicago. And LA. And Detroit. And Boston…

This probably does not bode well for Sluka’s NIL/portal opportunities. In fact, the replacement statistically looks like a much better qb (based on that one game.) Sometimes it is the team or program and not the individual. Let this be a lesson for others.

How would you feel about taking away the four game redshirt rule? Players can still redshirt but not once they start playing. It will prevent players from sitting in the middle of the season. If the QB lost a year he would not sit.

I wouldn't want to hinder the development of most because of those that want to use it to their advantage.
I also don't really have a problem with anyone protecting their eligibility. It's ultimately their career.

Just let them all play 5 years and be done with it. The 4 game rule is weird.

They can still redshirt and their development does not help the team if they transfer.

Playing is developing
It's not supposed to be about the team--it's supposed to be about the players, right?
Isn't that supposedly who we all care about? Or is that only when they do what we want them to do?
