Thanks to everyone for your input....love this board! We have rented a home in Corolla, NC....looking forward to a relaxing vacation in the OBX.

I want to hire a fishing charter...when I google Fishing Charters in Corolla, I get about 7 - 8 places that have varying mixed reviews, mostly bait shops and other local outfits. I have 7 people that want to go, most charters max out at 6. Anyone have any recommendations of how to find local charters that may not show up on my google search?

Call either Oregon Inlet marina or Pirate's Cove marina, those are the 2 big ones on OBX. Both are a haul from Corolla, it'll take you a solid hour to Pirate's Cove and an hour and a half to Oregon Inlet. There are other marinas further south, but smaller fleets.

There are a number of very good charters out of Wanchese as well (10 minutes from Pirate’s Cove - also on on Roanoke Island). The Wicked Tune OBX series on NatGeo crews are based here...at least most of them are I believe.

Don't know anything about fishing, but a trip to the 4x4 beach is worth it. If you have a 4x4 or AWD you can do it yourself if not they have commercial trips

One heads up bout swimming. The currents there are much stronger than the DE, MD and NJ shores. And they don't have lifeguards on many of the beaches. I am a body surf nut and I struggled to even get past the breakers - at age 40 in great shape. Be really careful.

Another alternative on OBX is swimming on the sound side. Depending on where you are staying, you may be close to a Sound location where the water is calm and shallow. Very good alternative for young kids. And for kayaking.

Oregon Inlet Fishing Center is closest option to Corolla, really can't go wrong on any of the boats. Carolina charters generally work together offshore helping each other to get on and raise fish. Most Capt's have a six-pack license, if you find a master near coastal you'll be able to take more than six.

Capt. Sam Stokes on the Fightin' Lady is a local legend, been running charters for 40-years, having landed a grander and 900+ blue marlin some years ago. That being said, fisherman are more prone to release now days.

If anyone has motion sickness drink ginger soup the night before and bring fresh ginger with you.

Good luck & tight lines....

Have you chartered a fishing trip before? I'll assume no and give you my thoughts. I'll further assume you mean to fish for big game fish and not a basic "take me out with my gear and let me fish" type trip.

Most charters suck. People envision catching a huge fish and having great pictures, a mount, and stories. Reality is that you get to watch the mate fish...the mate rigs the gear, baits the gear, gets the gear set in the water, sets the hook in the event of a strike, does the initial reeling, hands you the rod once the fish is absolutely on the hook, and takes lands the fish when it gets close to the boat. The mate has a great time fishing while you foot the bill.

If you want bigger fish and FUN, do either a NEAR shore (not in-shore) or find a boat that specializes in catching some type of large fish that YOU get to fish.

Another poster above recommended Country Girl out of Pirates Cove...I do as well. If you go bottom fishing with them use braided line...he fishes deep water and you'll catch 2x the fish on braided line vs mono due to latch of stretch.

Side note: look at a map of the outer banks and you'll notice that the only two inlets along the entire length are at Oregon Inlet and Cape Hatteras. Corolla is far from these so you'll have a drive. Pirates Cove is on Roanoke Island just over the bridge on Rt. 64 just south of Nags Head. Oregon Inlet is about 20 minutes from Nags Head South on Hatteras Island. The Oregon Inlet Marina is just before the bridge so pay attention. Pirates Cove is right at the bottom off the tall bridge heading over to Roanoke Island.
