Update on Malcolm Gladwell's book "Talking to Strangers"

They had a full year before indicting JS to confirm the date. McQueary watched Rudy on Friday night. Dranov was in Boston for a conference later that weekend. How hard is that to track down? Unless of course it is all BS

It doesn't seem very likely that Mike would be able to act distraught and incoherent 6 weeks after the event -- and I believe Joe basically confirmed that Mike remained shook up when Mike spoke to Joe.

On the other hand, none of the board's gumshoes have bothered to check if there was a medical conference in Boston around New Year's. My guess is no. Pretty dumb to have a conference on a Holiday.

For that matter was Mike even on campus on December 29? He and his family could have been out of town for the holidays.

Just finished it.

He did a better job than anyone actually making a case for Paterno and getting the facts straight.

They needed the date to be in 2002 in order to charge Curley and Schultz for failure to report because of the 10 year statute of limitations.

Do you have a reference for that? I think you're right but I don't recall where I've seen it.
Not immediately, I recall that being mentioned in researching some old reports of the UVA HC search. Reports had Jim Caldwell as his potential OC with Al Golden his likely DC, if he took the job.

Yes I've seen newspaper reports confirming that. But I haven't seen anything confirming that Jerry wanted to start a TSM in Charlottesville. I've heard that was the case but don't know if it was in the papers.

But the OAG did investigate Jerry in 1998 and failed to indicate him. They could have done that without bringing charges and Jerry's access to boys would have been restricted. His guest privileges in the PSU facilities would not have been written into his retirement agreement and none of this would have ever happened.
To be fair, wasn’t the 1998 investigation done by the Centre County DA as opposed to the PA attorney general...

Distraught...NO. Incoherent...ALWAYS

Yes, Jim Caldwell actually accompanied Sandusky on one of his trips to UVA for one of his interviews. So-called “Victim 2” Allan Myers was also on that trip.

I'm confused about the December 29, 2000 date.

Dranov says in court that he knew the date when he came over and spoke with Mike was February 9, 2001 because that was the weekend he had a medical conference up in Boston and he remembers leaving the next day.

So did Mike put on some dramatic performance for Dranov 6 weeks after he witnessed the incident? That makes no sense.
It is possible that Mike did his song and dance for Dad and Dranov 6 weeks later.

It is also possible that Dranov mis-remembered the date.

Travelling with an unrelated boy seems like something Jerry's team would be sure to bring up in any new trial. Good look.

What the heck are you saying? Even if it was somehow weird for a fatherless teenage boy to spend time with another adult male with his mother’s blessing, Sandusky brought another adult on the trip! Makes no sense if Sandusky was actually molesting said teenage boy!

Gladwell was on Jimmy Kimmel last night. Pretty bad interview from Kimmel but Gladwell is a very strange dude.
That is the first time I've ever seen him.

Saw him in person a few years ago. Strange and brilliant and very interesting dude. But yes, strange.

Lasch phone records would be definitive.

At that time, it's possible that Mike had a cell phone. That being said, there can't have been that many calls made to the McQ household from Lasch. Is this something that us common folk can get our hands on, via freedom of information or something?

1) I don't think we've seen any phone records though. Funny, that.

2) Even if we had, that doesn't mean they are definitive. Mike could have seen whatever he saw in December, then decided months later that he wanted to talk to Joe about it, called his dad from Lasch and set the wheels in motion.

This is regarding the trip to Virginia, right? I would assume they stayed overnight.
What were the sleeping arrangements?

Sandusky has maintained all along that he linked this Allan Myers incident with being informed that he didn't get the UVA coaching job. He lost out on the coaching job to Al Groh. And from Wikipedia:

Groh was named the head coach of the Virginia Cavaliers football team on December 30, 2000, succeeding George Welsh, who retired as the winningest coach in school and Atlantic Coast Conference history.

Very good article, but it merely reflects what anyone with even a modicum of common sense already knows. That said, we live in a world gone mad.

The same people have been talking about the same BS for almost nine years with no hope of changing the outcome. I agree, some in this world have gone mad.
