January 4 is the cut date.
He is suffering from degenerative disc in L5/S1. That disc is to be one of your largest and it is the smallest he has in the L and S regions. It is out of the vertebrae and pushing on the nerve. Simple cleanup of the disc and all should be well for now. My retired 6th grade math thought is this is not his last surgery in life.
We could go the route of pain management, steroid shots and therapy, but these will all simply postpone the inevitable.
Two days rest in bed, then one week up and around, but no school followed by one week of half days until he returns full-time. His main concern is his Gov class as they are working on We The People speeches to give in a competition at the Statehouse on January 27.
All in all, not horrible news. Only a 45 minute surgery and as soon as he is fully out of the effects of the anesthesia, we head for home.
Insurance is a high HSA deductible, but am still trying to maneuver a way to financially get to Pasadena. :)

Thanks to all for your earlier tidbits of information, kind words and prayers.

Many prayers will be sent your way. best of luck.

My only advice is that football isn't really that important in the grand scheme of life. You might have a different opinion, but a good education will serve him far better.

Good luck to your son. FWIW, I had the same surgery with the same L5 / S1 disc 24 years ago. The doctor came in the next morning and wanted to know why I hadn't gone for a walk yet. He then tore the covers off the bed and made me go for a walk right then and there. I haven't looked back since and that was with 24 year old technology. Don't worry !!!

Good luck to your son OL, and your mental health during these times. Putting a child through a medical procedure, even a straight forward one, is always a stress filled process. Good news is, as others have mentioned, back procedures have come a long way. We'll be praying for you both.

Ohio, thanks for the update. Best of luck to your son. Here's hoping he's up and around without pain very soon.

Enjoy Pasadena. :)

Keep us updated with his recovery post-op. Looking forward to hearing about him beating you in father and son 40!

prayers for you son, I know it is a totally awful feeling when you see one of your kids hurting and you can't really do anything for them.
