I caught up with 165-pound starter Shakur Rasheed before the start of practice Tuesday. Along with a few other reporters, we discussed his loss against VT's Dave McFadden, in which Rasheed gave up three third-period takedowns.

PSU's redshirt freshman said the final moments of that match were unlike anything he has experienced since he started wrestling at five years old, and attributed it to weight management, or the lack thereof. Cael Sanderson also said something to the effect during his availability.

Comments from both of them and how Rasheed is maintaining his weight going forward at the link below.

Wrestling: Rasheed making the adjustments

Good to see that Shakur is making adjustments, and that Cael is positive about his development and potential.

It's difficult to see him holding 165 past this season, but he could be effective at 174, providing Bo also moves up (which seems quite possible). I'm afraid there are more talented wrestlers than spots in the lineup for the next couple years at least, but that's a good problem to have.

I've observed enough of Shakur (Corey) Rasheed to see glimpses of his potential. All he needs, imo, is time on the mat. The time missed last year set him back a little.

Your second paragraph Roy sums it up. Boy is it great.

You might be 100% correct, and I suspect that most people have similar suspicions/doubts/projections. However, it could also be that as this season progresses, and Rasheed gains maturity and knowledge about how to manage the cut, that he gets quite comfortable at 165. In addition, he's always had a thin build. I don't know his walking around weight in the offseason, but I doubt it's above Bo's, despite Rasheed's height. I think it's quite plausible that he'll be at 165 next year, unless Nolf outgrows 157, or unless the guys above move up.

I don't disagree that there is going to be some amazing competition for some spots on the roster in the coming years. That's not a bad thing for the team. 197 seems to be one of the keys next year. Cutch seems small for that weight (though I recognize that he wrestled heavier than 184 in HS). Cassar and Stout seem to be the most likely guys to fill that spot, though due to his injury Cassar is not likely to have a lot of mat time before next season, and Stout, due to his being a true fresh, is unlikely to have wrestled anything other than Opens, so there will be questions (to fans) about both of them.

Kind of premature to be discussing next year, when we're only 4 matches (for PSU) into this season. But we're nuts/fanatics/whatever, so we'll probably spend a good bit of time speculating it between now and next Nov.

Amen Tom!

According to the article, Rasheed is almost 6' 2. That is really tall for 165 even if he has a naturally thin build. Can't see him staying at this weight long term, probably one year and then moving up with a few other guys.

If they stay you have one Vincenzo Joseph. I'm intrigued to see how the coaches play this one out. Unfortunate but one of Joseph, Rasheed, McCutcheon or Cassar is going to sit depending on how everything shakes out (assuming health).
