In men's Lacrossse?

Air Force is in the Southern, and Denver is in the Big East, so no precedent there....

The Utes will hold a press conference officially announcing lacrosse's addition Friday at 10 a.m.

Hill said many sports have approached him about joining the athletic department over the years, but lacrosse was in a unique position to succeed. The program has significant financial backing: The university will receive a $15.6 million endowment (registered to an anonymous donor) to sustain the sport's costs. The addition of women's beach volleyball and the U. of U.'s male-majority enrollment also enabled Utah to add lacrosse while remaining Title IX compliant.

Utah will retain club coach Brian Holman, who was hired last August from an assistant role at North Carolina. The sport will play its first season in the spring of 2019, planning for a 40-man roster. Hill said he expected the sport wouldn't start out with a full allotment of 12.6 scholarships, but would grow into it.

Utah becomes one of only three men's lacrosse programs west of the Mississippi River, including Denver and Air Force. It is not yet known what conference affiliation the Utes will have in lacrosse.

This story will be updated.

At first glance, I think Utah would be a welcome addition in all sports. Yes, there is the travel, but I think it's less than 2 more hours by air past Nebraska, so it's not that big a deal. Let's get it done (Oh, and dump Rutgers).:)

As for travel, I'd guess Utah would prefer to be in the same conference as Denver and Air Force although making that happen would be easier said than done seeing how the other two are already in different conferences. Maybe the B1G can add all three??

I think all that would be for the short term. If the sport continues to grow out west and enough PAC schools begin to sponsor lacrosse, Utah would leave anyway. If they did join the B1G there would likely be a mutual understanding of that possibility and a clause which would allow Utah to leave with no hard feelings on either side.

EDIT: Giving it more thought, all it would take is three other PAC schools to sponsor men's lacrosse in order to form a conference. It could be the three newbies and Utah plus Denver and Air Force as associate members. The B1G added Johns Hopkins to get to six. However, Denver might not find much competition in a conference comprised mainly of schools which are just starting to build a program. That could cool their interest in such a scenario.

it wouldn't surprise me. Brian Holman didn't take his family out there to be a club team. He may have lean on Sandy to get them in the B1G.

Denver should top the B1G's list if (and only if) Johns Hopkins decides not to renew with the B1G when that comes due (2 years or so).

Denver is currently in the Big East. The Big East could theoretically add Utah and Air Force and go with divisions, although I don't think this would go over well with either Denver (reduction in league quality, doesn't necessarily want to play in the same conference as AFA) or Marquette (more trips way west).

Big East East --- Georgetown, Providence, St John's, Villanova
Big East West --- Air Force, Denver, Marquette, Utah

I'm thinking Big East for Utah would be the most likely destination for lacrosse. Very unlikely to be the Big Ten -- they have a nice even number of teams for men's lacrosse and have little incentive to add Utah.

One completely out of the box thought -- and there is virtually zero chance of this happening -- would be for the Big Ten to invite Denver and Utah for men's lacrosse and Denver for men's ice hockey. Again, zero chance, but it would actually make some sense for the Big Ten:
1. Denver is actually great at both ice hockey and lacrosse and would improve competitiveness in those sports.
2. That would result in even numbers of teams in both those sports for the Big Ten (ice hockey will have 7 members starting this upcoming season) which is better for scheduling.
3. Provides a relatively local team in lacrosse with Denver and Utah together. In ice hockey, it's not as bad for Denver to be on an island since the conference has teams in that sport that are more western (e.g. Minnesota) and closer.

After doing some research, I'll bet it'll be the ACC...:(... they need a 6th team to get an autobid to the tourney...

Nothing can replace the intense rivalry between Penn State and rutgres.
Nothing like a good rivalry to bring out the best in people.

Question: is the second guy from the right wearing a UTE shirt?

On another subject, your thoughts on Joe Williams? He played at Emmaus, in the same conference as Barkley.

Needed a brain reset before he came back, but was a total monster once he hit the field again. San Francisco got a bargain in the draft...
